Cat of 17 years, Fiver, gone today. A few words on that.
Posted 7 years agoI went to the vet's office with a huge weight on my shoulders and left with the weight moved to my heart, where it can heal.
It was time. My cat of 17 years, Fiver, the best cat that ever lived was put to sleep this morning. He had a good long life. A healthy life up until this last year when he needed some teeth removed and at the same time, developed something that caused him to eat less and less and thin down from fourteen pounds to 5 over a year, the last 6 over the last 3 months. Testing, so much spent on testing turned up some hints but only invasive procedures would give more info and even then it's not likely it would be something that could be reversed. Remember, 17.
I'm glad I stayed with him to the end. It was comforting to me to see the medicine they gave him to relax put him in a place he hasn't been in a while. I petted him and talked to him and then in the end, I had closure. He was gone but I saw his peace and I was there with him. Seeing him wilt slowly was a huge weight that's gone. Hurts like hell but that hurt heals.
The thing I want to communicate is that as hard as it is, when it's time, it's time. Don't watch your pet debilitated by age or illness dwindle too long. When that quality of life is gone, they spend the days trying to sleep and are obviously uncomfortable, it's time to decide. Don't keep them around for you. When it's time, be that loving owner, do the thing for them that shows how much you love them.

My opinion on Fursonas
Posted 9 years agoThe best part is the cover picture and title.
Fursonas is a an extremely biased documentary that used sensationalized clips out of context to make money off the fandom. They were ejected from AC for breaking media rules and it was sour grapes after that.
I say with confidence that most people have uttered words and opinions at some point or another in the past (Hey lets see some dates on those Kage clips). AC is a con Kage and the con volunteers (That's an important word, look it up if you're not sure what it means) dedicate a sizeable portion of their lives to putting on. You can cut them some slack. Kage might have some strong opinions on people but he's entitled to his opinion. He has the best image for the fandom as his core motivation for his words and actions. This I'm offended' BS movement has no capacity to understand what it means to pour a lot of money, time and effort into something only to have someone try to tear it down.
So the good:
The few villainized people in the fandom had a voice and a chance to explain their side outside of the social media justice warriors.
Boomer The Dog was seen for what he is: a Guy who is pretty much doing his own thing and here comes a label that fits, Furry. In my mind, he doesn't even fit surry, he's more genuine, he is exactly what he wants to be. He's freer than most of us in that way and should be seen in a nicer light.
Diesel Raccoon - He was a really good genuine segment. he's what a lot of us are, just doing our thing and shaking our heads at the haters and people who try to typecast us as something we aren't.
The bad - The constant hammering on Kage. We get it, you don;t like him, move on and put in more content worth watching. how about some amazing art and comics? How about furry type literature through the ages, how it came to be what we have today?
More bad - 2 opinionated dudes and some pot. Ok, whatever, it didn't add anything. Older furry all but ready to yell get off my lawn.
Overall it was obvious the focus was blurred. The bad drowned out the good and took something that could have been an amazing cake and frosted it in manure. It was not that informative, it was not that fair. It was, in the end, typical media and why AC and other cons ban media.
Find someone who bought it and watch it if you want. FF past the Kage BS.

Con stuff -Ghosting and discussion on FWA Ghost claim
Posted 9 years agoI've been going to cons for along time. Sci-Fi cons, Star Trek Cons (Before they become giant media events) anime cons, Furry cons. I've probably racked up around 250-300 easily in my lifetime. Here are my opinions.
Cons and Ghosting..
1) Regarding FWA specifically, I heard it was a 27% increase in room block and a 6% increase in attendance. So this = $42,000? - 700 attendees? Seems really off. At cons I used to do 4/room but now I do 2. Maybe more people are tired of sharing and room density is lower? All you can count on is 1 person to a room.
Now on to cons in general. This is my opinion -
Cons tend to try to act like they aren't a business then complain when the business of the con is off kilter. Is ghosting really that big of a problem? I seriously doubt it. We all know someone who ghosts or has. So why come to a con if that's what you are going to do? Well, the answer is clearly that cons aren't supplying what (some) people want aside from a central gathering place with a little discount on a hotel room. The hotel room thing goes a lot further when the con eats an entire hotel and you don't have to deal with mundanes as well.
Maybe cons should start to ask themselves what would engage people if ghosting is a problem? Maybe not. Most cons are cookie cutter anyway. Location and time of year tend to be more of a factor for success than what the con offers.
They all offer:
Services for fursuiters
Several flavors of dance comps
Dances, raves, whatever they are
A Dealers room
People known in the fandom who have 'story hour' or ' Let me tell you about my acid trip' stage shows
And even the smallest cutest little con huffs and puffs and tries to do it all. So really it's more about who I know who is going than the background noise of the con.
Want to get more poeple engaged? Offer more engaging programming. I think I may go into more specifics on my own journal but for this discussion I'll say if you are sleeping at the hotel, you should buy a memberhip. And if a con wants to allow someone to drop off a thank you $10 they need to find a way to do it that doesn't involve a long line, because f-that.
OK some cons I go to and why: (And what cons could do to stand out)
MCFC - 2.5 hour drive - Hotel really engaged and nice. In fact the hotel could be said to be part of the attraction, with it's nice lobby bar and staff. If they move hotels it could be bad. They have a minimum age because they supply beer!
Last year I hardly entered a con-specific space aside from the free food and drinks. I didn't even hit the dealer's room (same stuff, different con). I still sponsored because MCFC enabled me to have my get-together with friends.
Michigan is a big Beer state. It has some notable breweries and a large home brew population. I think MCFC should consider capitalizing on it's notoriety for beer by being a bit of a home brew con. Have a demo of brewing, have a home brew contest and tasting. Lots of furs brew no other con does the beer thing that I know of, as well at MCFC.
TFF - Been there once, hate hyenas, never going back! OK just kidding about hyenas. There's only 2 cons in the USA I would put up with air travel to attend (on my own dime), because F-air travel! TFF and Megaplex. TFF is a well run con that I did hardly any con stuff at and yet, I can't help but like them even though I hate the hotel. The building is nice, the staff were by far the worst people I've dealt with in a long time. Others have not had my experiences so make sure to note that. At any rate at some cons, the staff are far away, lofty and above everyone, inaccessible. At TFF the mood is your buddies have this party they are putting on and you want to go. The area TFF is in has really good food options, too.
Megaplex - Probably one of the most engaging cons I've been to in a long, long, long time. I found myself making notes on the schedule to get to places, set up for video, roam aimlessly shooting video and still attending events! They have an Ice Cream social that's not some simple dude scooping to peopel in a line. It's a full blown dessert Bacchanalia. Then there's the amazing Pool area, the musical guests and the full band they put together for performances. They are doing a lot of good stuff and stand out.
Anthrocon - I can drive to it in 3 hours but I don't go anymore. I have a well defined sense of what I want in a con and AC doesn't meet it. Go if you like, it's too big, too spread out and too expensive for what I take away.
Indy Fur Con - I was there once years ago (2013). I spent ost of the time in room parties because it was a clone of other larger cons. (Story hour, Acid trip comedy). I may drive over to see it for the weekend this year and see if it's found it's niche. It's a good time of the year to hang out with friends, for sure.

About having a pet, the costs
Posted 10 years agoFor discussion:
This is not about anyone. This is about the thought process that goes into owning a pet.
I have a cat. I like dogs and cats but I'll not get a dog because dogs cost a lot. Like a friend once said, dogs are like children. There's always something wrong or needing attention and potential vet bills can be high. Even when you are charged by the pound for even routine immunizations, a vet bill can run a few hundred for routine visits for a large dog.
Exotic pets that have a history of health problems such as ferrets, birds, reptiles, etc can be pricey.
I'm seeing a trend in people begging for money because their pet had a huge vet bill. So the question is: Why on Earth would you adopt an animal you couldn't pay to care for?
I'm not saying to do or not do for supporting these please for assistance. I'm just shaking my head wondering why would people have pets they clearly cannot afford to have?
I should add I'm not a dog person because I don't feel I could afford the costs. I've seen healthy dogs become 5k bills in no time. I'd hate to have to choose.

Posted 10 years agoMFF Dec 7 report
Posted 10 years agoTheme for this post: Have a plan.
SERIOUSLY have a plan, think about what you’d do if something bad happens.
I was there. II was exiting and weird to be in the midst of… something.
Saturday night I finally had a quiet room at 11pm so I wanted to nap a little. Still dressed, I keeled over and was soon dreaming. The alarms went off but I did not wake because the speaker in the room, the one you expect to hear, wasn’t blaring, it was out in the Atrium. The Sounds of the horn and the voice became part of a dream I was having odd as it sounds, I started to dream of diffusing a bomb that had the hotel alarm going off.
Manick came in after fursuiting to shower I think. I half woke up and I think he showered. I’m foggy on events here as I know I heard something and went back to nap as I’ve been through MANY hotel fire alarms and wasn’t too convinced it was a big deal since the room speaker wasn’t blaring to get out, get to the choppa!
Manick wakes me and I ask WTF is going on? It’s about 1:20am Dec. 7. I say something like “Well, this con used to get a fire alarm pull in the old hotel every con, it’s probably nothing.” We have an atrium room on the 6th floor and he tells me he sees people leaving and firemen coming in. I say oh, crap! Well maybe something real is going down, we better GTFO!
Still waking up, I had a plan in mind in case of emergency. I knew it was cold so had my Jacket, with my car keys and wallet in it, in a spot to grab and go. And that’s how it went down. Slipped on shoes, jacket, grabbed a few cigars and the video camera off the table and out we went.
I we entered the stairs and even though we didn’t know a stairway was involved we were sure there was no smoke or anything else in our ESCAPE ROUTE before heading down.
Outside we just went where told. I tried to get people to sing Xmas carols but people weren’t having it so I recorded video. I received a text from a roomie, Jack that he was taken to a hospital and thought he would be OK. So I was worried a little.
Eventually we were told we could go into the convention center, set up for a dog show >>IRONY<< and milled about being asked to move deeper and deeper into the building.
I lost Manick and found Aldot and Jeffrey. Aldot pointed out how the most drama from this would be the dog show people complaining people sat in their folding camp chairs. LOL true I think!
Aldot also said hey, let’s get an Uber and go somewhere. I knew it would be hours so we agreed to walk to Denny’s. It was a mile in the cold and we sat there and followed Twitter until we saw the all clear and Uber’d it back.
Upon returning, we saw the Germans (BBF, TIllikum, Sheppy, so many others!) were all drinking beer and relaxing so we partied until about 7am, when we decided to get a little sleep. Jack came back and I could relax. A few hours of sleep later we resumed normal con partying!
The hotel and con staff were awesome! They deserve many hugs and drinks next con!

Moved!
Posted 11 years agoSo I finally landed a new jerb in Columbus and thanks to the help of many friends in Cleveland and Columbus, I moved the bulk of my stuff Saturday. What an adventure.
Thursday I'll drop off some more misc stuff that got forgotten and Friday me and the cat relocate permanently!
I'll be in the same area as notable people as Roby Panther, Twitch, Kwikdog, Kitashi, Camcartoonfanatic, RolfRaccoon, AJ Firewolf and Truegrave and Ed hyena. Did I miss any? Wow, so many cool people I can call friends living a few houses away. Fuskerz too not far off as well as Cinderwolf!
Not to say my Cleveland friends aren't awesome, too! I had only recently found a decent group up here to hang with (Since other friends had kids and dropped out of the picture) but my plans to move were set!
I've lived in CMH before and I look forward to this new chapter in my life. :3

Rocket Raccoon original comics
Posted 11 years agoSooo... I'm one of the older folks in the fandom. You young folks don't blink, next you know you're 45 and like Wow, it's been such a ride!
How does this tie into Rocket Raccoon? Well in 1985 when I discovered the emerging Furry Fandom, comics were still a huge thing. Print comics. Like, all you have because no Internet existed.
Sooo.. Here comes Rocket Raccoon, and wow! i bought all I could! And here's the movie 29 years later? Hollywood moves so slow!
To my fortune I found I have 3 complete 1-4 sets of RR and 1 x #4 also 2x RR and the Hulk in a special story!
Right after Megaplex, Ebay time! All those years sitting in a box will finally pay off!

My TFF Blurb - Also con-going tips and tricks
Posted 11 years agoI'll be at TFF. I get in Wednesday around 15:30 (land) Meet up with some friends who are renting a car and on the way to the hotel, shopping some an checking in by 17:00 I hope.
Here is some info to find me and my advice for con goers to any kind of con -
Want to find me? I'm a big guy, had to miss. I've been mistaken for Tony Ringtail (Yes, two super good looking guys in this fandom! Wow!) I have a shaved head and a big, curled mustache. I'm hard to miss.
I'm very approachable. My relaxed face looks angry. Don't swat it, come up and say hello if you like! Every con I make a few friends I keep forever, be that person!
During the con I wear hawaiian shirts and take a lot of video footage. If you want me to record you in or out of fursuit come up and get involved while I'm recording or ask if I am not. I give copies of my footage to others like BigBlueFox and sometimes it makes it into his con videos, too!
If I happen to record you and you don't want to be in a video, say so. When I (we) see that, we cut it from the video. No worries. Don't expect anyone to stop, show you them deleting you right there. Some cameras can edit on the fly but really, no one is going to do this. It's unreasonable to expect that level of assurance because as a videographer, we do like to please con goers and we aren't going to show someone in a bad light or someone who doesn't want to be in a video.
I'm an older fur and I've been to a lot of cons. I'm not exactly sure how many. Somewhere in 140-160 cons counting all the small Star Trek cons I and Sci-Fi cons I did from age 16 on. I have some advice for convention attendees -
1) The old get 6 hours sleep, eat, etc. Everyone posts this I don't need to get into it.
2) Tip your maid! Tip 1.00 / person / day. Leave the tip daily! Maids rotate out. Leave more if you leave a messy room! I personally pack garbage bags and nag up pizza boxes, bottles, cans, all the junk and leave a nice room that needs a little straightening and fresh towels. I usually ask for extra towels when I have fursuiters as roomies and the tips go a long way for the maids remembering to leave a few extras when you ask. Last day, leave a few extra bucks and write a nice thank you note! It is not only polite but it leaves a great impression on the hotel staff.
3) Tipping at restaurants - I can't count the number of times I've gone out to eat and been treated poorly because previous furs tipped poorly or didn't tip or treated staff like shit. You are not King Shit of Turd Mountain and your waiter is not your subject. They are working for like 2.00 an hour plus tips and they make mistakes. If you need to bring something up, do it nicely and you will likely get a good result. If not, ask for the manager. Treat people with respect even if they are asses. This is as much about your character as theirs. Have dignity and show that members of this fandom are well mannered.
4) Treat all hotel staff with high regard. If you have a serious problem and cannot get it resolved after polite discourse, talk to the convention staff. Acting like an angry ass will not help. There have been times I have had to calmly insist to talk to a hotel manager but only twice. And being calm and concise as to what your problem is, not being abrasive, gets you places. I once had a free upgrade to a fantastic suite after my room type was all out and I arrived early in the day! Never stoop to being an abusive, angry asshole. Never! Even parting shots are not worth it.
5) I mentioned on the way from the airport I am doing some shopping. If you can, do some! Even if you have the $$ to eat out, you may find times a small snack, a healthy snack like apples, bananas and such get you through to miss less con, attend a panel you want to see and so on. Also you have a chance to shop for adult beverages to take the edge off the hotel bar bill you may be working up. For some a little shopping trip may be all they want or need to eat and drink.
6) Have a con staffer who you like / went out of their way to help you? Just want to do something nice for staff / a staffer? Buy them a drink! Bring con ops some donuts in the morning. These folks are WORKING so you have fun and deserve love. They aren't just working these 4 days of the con. They WORK ALL YEAR! They take a lot of time planning and meeting and arranging so this con happens! Remember that if reg system breaks and you end up standing for an hour in a line.
Hope to see you at TFF and other cons!

AC idea genius by Sparf!
Posted 11 years agoOk I saw Sparf come across my twitter feed with the idea of AC having FS lockers available.
Then I thought wow, how could this work?
1) The con needs a large room next to a FS lounge.
2) The con could staff it like they do for the art show, where you check your bag.
3) There could be curtained changing areas.
OK so here's the risky facts:
1) FS people would be storing at their own risk.
2) Does the con charge a fee for this? Yes.
3) Who staffs it? Ideally FS people but you still need con staff to supervise.
Etc..

Important info on head injuries
Posted 11 years agoFor those of you of any age who think something serious is actually small and “Will be OK”.
I know someone who was recently in a car collision and in this collision, they hit their head. They stated they blacked out for a short time during the actual impact. They had (have) a headache.
They did not go to the ER even though it was not their fault. They are still having some degree of pain a few days later.
Where to start ranting about how serious an impact to the head, even something seeming small (this is not small, this is serious) can be?
Even a cursory search on the effects of a concussion show days, weeks, months later symptoms can develop if it is not treated correctly. How would you like terrible, debilitating migraine headaches for the rest of your life? How about loss of motor skills, speech or reason, the list goes on and on.
The brain is a soft organ and is easily damaged when you suffer blunt trauma. The fact you didn’t die in a few hours from a bleed due to a tear in a blood vessel does not mean you don’t need medical care.
Anyone remember Billy Mays? He was that millionaire who sold gadgets on TV. He bumped hid head on a plane ride and died in his sleep at home that night. I wonder if he received any advice that “It’ll be OK” or ‘Take some Ibufrofin’. Take some bad advice from family and it’s ok. If something really bad develops it’s on them to care for you anyway. Hey mom, I need help wiping because I can’t control my arms. This assumes you can speak clearly.
So why am I beating this horse? I had someone in my family go untreated for a head injury. They went form a happy, productive person to someone who sits in front of the TV all day, smokes and complains. All they do is complain. They had a total personality change. No one wants to be near them but they have to, it’s family. This person never worked again. Never did much of anything. Watch TV, smoke, complain and start fights, eat, shit sleep, bathe when they were forced.
OK don’t have time? Bullshit. ERs are open 24 hours. This is more important than going to work.
Can’t afford it? CAN’T NOT AFFORD IT! Also, not your fault, on the other person’s insurance.
Think it’s too late? Bullshit! People go in days later all the time after an accident.
They think a bruise is nothing until an Xray shows a broken bone.
Know much about car insurance? Have a car and insurance? Call your agent even though it wasn’t your car, ask them what is what. They’ll explain it.
If you are hurt, do not stick your head in the sand and hope it will be OK. I hope you read this and go to the ER and get checked and I hope nothing is wrong and I look like an ass but I’d rather be wrong than see someone mess up the rest of their life because they didn’t act when it was soon enough.
Don’t take my word for it, call a hospital ER and ask advice. GOOGLE TBI Traumatic Brain Injury or Untreated concussions.
Google CALL FOR FREE MEDICAL ADVICE there are many, many places to call.
I hope the person this is meant for reads this and is scared. I they are scared enough to seek a medical exam. Hate me for hounding but do it.

Fursuiters and fursuiting
Posted 11 years agoWow I'm on a roll tonight! I'm exploding with opinions!
This is my view from Ohio where in the early days, we went to (furry) cons we could drive to. Hello Duckcon!
The subject was brought up about the 'Celebrity status of some fursuiters'.
I thought on that a few and decided to blab here. So here goes my OPINION and observations.
tl:dr - Oh look, a shiny!
In the beginning there was fake fur. And the fake fur was nasty and hot and furries were ingenious and made their own fursuits out of it. And Robert King looked upon the fursuits and nodded that this is good. He started emailing lists to get people connected and talking about techniques for making FS (FS = Fursuits) and PERFORMING in them! You know, acting out the character! If I remember correctly, at the start no one talked, either (more on that later).
He is still around but myself not being a big FS (wearing) person do not know if he's still promoting it a lot these days. I think he has a lot going on in other areas. Give him <3 if you meet him, he's done a lot for this fandom.
What I remember from those early days, those cave man days of FSing when we only saw saber toothed tiger FSes it was so long ago. Back when we couldn't get out of our cars at the hotel until the veliciraptors move out of the area, was that performance is important. Performance is possibly more important than the actual FS being worn.
To be fair, after I'm done writing this I'll remember a lot of people worth mentioning so I'll limit it to one most FSers will know, Yippee Coyote. He can put on a garbage bag full of live raccoons and make it come to life as a character! To be honest, probably a character that screams and runs around a lot, but you get the idea. Is he a Celebrity Status FSer? In my book, he is. (Others also but he's my example)
So why mention this? Well, I think it's important to tell people that buying and wearing a FS doesn't end there. It doesn't give a membership card into a club where 'Hey I have a cute civet, I expect to be well known even though I stand there and do little more than add a lot of BTUs to the room.
However a person gets to the point that they put on the costume, any costume, and they become the character is where the celebrity status FSer or pro costumer at sci-fi cons gains notoriety.
I can tell you first hand, as I own a nice partial grey fox made by my friend (see me name drop?) Chibi Morrow. I hardly wear it because I feel weird. I haven't yet come up with the character. I have the look but not the action, not the feel. So I do my video at cons instead and when I get that character fleshed out, I'll wear Heisenberg (Yeah, I named him that).
So-
Doing video I try to interact with FSers because they make good subjects. They are, for the most part ( Looking at you, Kurst), willing and interesting to watch and usually have something going on worth recording and sharing. I'm certain they like to see themselves later as anyone who has worn a FS head knows, they can rarely see a damn thing anyway when bopping about in a FS so I like to think I'm giving them something back for the effort they are putting forth. We all win. It's #WINNING all around without the Adonis DNA and tiger blood.
Talking in FS - Some like say yes, some say no. I've been cracked up pretty bad by Cooper Tom, King Gourde and Scurrow Squirrel. They are the Three Amigos? The Three Stooges? Anyway as for talking, they are doing it right! Not that others aren't but these guys crack me up every time. Talk about almost dropping a camera!
So if you own a FS great! If you are the character, awesome! If you aren't into it but want to show off, cool, too! If you want to be really known, nothing wrong with that but it comes with time and effort. Also when you reach celebrity status, I don't think you get even a mug so don't get too full of yourself, kid, we're all in this crazy fandom together. :3
P.S.
I just belted this out real quick in response to a friend talking about some FSers and expecting celebrity status. The opinions listed here are mine, and they are sleep deprived. If you meet Yippee and have a FS he hasn't worn, let him. He's on some quest to wear them all! Also, if you meet Robert King at MFF, buy him a beer, or a soda or whatever he likes these days.
