The Anthrocon Aftermath Wrap-Up Journal of 2013
General | Posted 12 years agoThis year's Anthrocon was a blast! Really, really fun even though it did feel a few degrees mellower, probably because my last con was Fur Fright and all the issues that marred that time. Time to delve into the memories that shine brightest!
The Omni loves me, apparently. Not the staff, I mean the actual hotel. Too many times to count I'd walk up the elevator block and an unoccupied one would open up for me. Thank you, Kami of the Hotel.
Thanks to one of the game stores in the Dealers' Den I unwrapped a fourth copy of my MtG cardsona: http://magiccards.info/gtc/en/215.html
Speaking of games, picked up two Lovecrafted versions of beloved games, Cthulhu Gloom and Cthulhu Fluxx. We're playing them at FAU and Fur Fright!
Got into an interesting few games of Albedo, the Furries in Space RPG. Interesting system, and it did feel good to roll the non 6-sided dice again, especially after having to abandon my gaming group.
Cards Against Humanity! This game's a great time just waiting to unfold.
Channel Anime. The card game where you'll have to come up with titles and premises. What kind of series should Sweet Frauline Twinkle Tales be? Or Pretty Penguin Moon Library?
My 3DS is exploding from all the Street Passes. But I'll probably need to wait for FAU to finish Find Mii and the Puzzles.
2's Rant. That's all I really need to say.
Uncle Kage's stirring tribute to Lemonade Coyote at the end of his Story Hour.
And to those too polite to ask, I'm still fighting off the horribly chapped lips I was battling all winter. No, Modem, I was not kissing all the hookers!
Also, I'm now considered lanky. Not sure how I should take that.
And too many awesome people to properly recall and give shout-outs to. But I'll try. Ahem,
lavin,
hornetv2 and
jake_lioner83,

If I'm forgetting you I'm sorry but it was such a whirlwind of awesomeness. Next up is FAU and I cannot wait to see many of you again!

Back from AC
General | Posted 12 years agoBeen back for about 90 minutes at this point. So much driving. After dropping
larathen off at his place in Danville I set out for Reading. My family has this unspoken rule where, if any of us are traversing Pennsylvania, we stop at this small chain restaurant called 'Your Place' and bring back Stromboli. Nearest one on the way is in Reading.
I thought Danville was just another one of the sleepy little rural PA towns, not unlike Annville, where my college is. I learned that, one small turn of the side, and you enter into lands untouched by modernity. I even saw a sign for the doleful town of Centralia, the Town Aflame.
I've been over hill and dale, through canyon and mountain and darkened wood. I'll write up a full AC-recap journal tomorrow. Right now, this bull has been behind the wheel for about 8 hours and needs sleep.

Anthocon's a Week Away!
General | Posted 12 years agoWow, that both came up way to quickly and far too slowly. And I'm still trying to compile my "Must Meet List," so let me know if you're going! I'll be bringing my own small way of sprucing up the Game Room, that is, Gloom, Fluxx, and a little thing called Cards Against Humanity. And yes, I have a 3DS this time so my Animal Crossing town will be open. I have cherries!
Anyway, who can I look forward to seeing in Pittsburgh in a week?

Ask Me Anything! The 6/13 Edition!
General | Posted 12 years agoWow it's been a while since I've done these things. So you know how it works, ask a question, potentially get an answer. Answers to be doled out after I get home from work tonight.
The Anthrocon Meme: 2013 Edition
General | Posted 12 years agoWhere are you staying?
Third year at the Omni. A 5 minute stroll is a fair exchange for endless elevator lines.
What day are you getting there?
July 4th.
How are you travelling?
Driving. Nearly the whole length of Pennsylvania. Good thing I have my new driving mix ready.
How old are you?
27
Who are you rooming with?
larathen,
trentonreinhardt,
bengal0, and
anthrofox.
Who will you hang out with during the con?
Anyone who'll have me! But mainly the tabletop gaming crowd. You'll know me by my knowledge of Base Attack Bonuses and when Deathtouch triggers.
What is the best way to find you?
When I'm not roaming I stick to the Game Room and the Zoo.
Are there any panels you'll be attending?
Haven't seen the schedule. I'm more of a 'play it by ear' kind of bull.
What is your gender?
Male.
How tall are you?
Last I checked 6'1''.
Can I talk to you?
Pleas e do. Awkwardly staring at me gives me the creeps.
Can I touch you?
If you have to ask, no you can't.
Can I visit your room?
Only if you're at acquaintance level or better.
Can I buy you drinks?
Touching, going back to the room, getting drunk.... What kind of minotaur do you take me for?
Are you nice?
Nice enough I suppose. I have yet to shank anyone.... today.
How long are you going?
Midday Thursday through Monday morning.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Yell 'ZIG!' I also respond to 'Moo.'
Where will you be most of the time during the day?
Game Room, Zoo, or Dealers' Den/Artist Alley.
What/where will you be eating?
Sandwiches, pizza and the like. I'm not picky.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
Restricted to acquaintance level or better.

Today's my birthday!
General | Posted 12 years agoIt is.
Still have roommate slots open for AC, FAU, and FurFright
General | Posted 12 years agoStill looking for one or two people interested in rooming for each of those three cons. All three reservations are from Thursday to Monday. My Anthrocon is at the Omni, the grand old hotel 2 blocks from the convention center. The FurFright room is in the Crowne Plaza, right on top of the con. And the FAU one is, well, the Marriot by default.
Note: This will not be a first come first served kind of thing. I'll be giving higher consideration to people I know and have met.

FurFright plans are set!
General | Posted 12 years agoI'm crossing my fingers that there won't be a late October hurricane this year, but I've booked my room at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Fell in love with it last year, though that my just be how I didn't have to bundle up to go to the Con space. And maybe because the Super 8 room I had the first year I went smelled like being trapped in a smoker's windpipe.
Anyway, I suppose it's time to start looking for a roommate or two. Room's from Thursday to Monday, lack of superstorms permitting. So who else is going?

I have some weird dreams...
General | Posted 12 years agoLet's see, last night I discovered that you can buy a newly hatched pegasus foal for only $1500. Too bad they have such a high mortality rate. So I got a capybara instead.
Now let's talk Dungeons and Dragons/Pathfinder
General | Posted 13 years agoOne small thing first. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate is the game that made me decide to get a 3DS. Is it good? Yeah, it's pretty good. A fun hack-n-slash in the vein of Lords of Shadow which itself was in the vein of God of War.
I liked the original Lords of Shadow. There were few game series in more dire need of a reboot than Castlevania. Having Lord Dracula rise every hundred years works fine when first starting out, but a dozen games later and you start running out of centuries and ways to justify him continually reviving.
I recall sharing this link years ago but felt like putting it out there again: http://easydamus.com/character.html
It's one of those "What DnD character are you?" quizzes, but it's a very extensive one. It's not the kind that only comes up with your alignment or class. This one pops out class, alignment, level, and stats! Yes, it is insane, but also fun. Here're the results of my last query:
Neutral Good Human Cleric (3rd Level)
Strength- 14
Dexterity- 12
Constitution- 13
Intelligence- 16
Wisdom- 15
Charisma- 13
To be honest, I'm a clumsy oaf, so that Dexterity score should really read something like 8.
And speaking of DnD and reboots/retcons. I think it's about time I gave Vinden, my Pathfinder sorcerer a little bit of a rebuild. Specifically, he's going to go multiclass, probably in terms of his character sheet whenever I get to play again, but specifically in terms of his stories.
The fun thing about 3e Dnd and Pathfinder is how even one level from a different class can radically alter a character's feel. Give a fighter one level of rogue and you get a warrior not above a few dirty tricks. A barbarian takes a level of cleric and suddenly you have a rage shaman. The great thing about writing stories based off such characters is I can mix and match whatever I want without regard to the rules, so long as it doesn't break the narrative. A paladin who dabbles in wizardry won't conjure anything more than a few cantrips.
Back to Vinden. His secondary class? Ranger. He'll be a sorcerer/ranger. It fits in with the backstory I originally conceived for him, that he spent some time in the wild honing his inborn magical abilities. And it occurs to me that, between the spellcasting, swordplay, and archery, Vinden now becomes like a burlier, hairier Link, albeit with more of a focus on magic than weapon skill (and right-handed too).
So that's my new vision for Vinden. A wanderer clad in studded leather, scimitar hanging from his belt, a shortbow and quiver on his back, and an arsena

Oz the Great and Powerful and Brave
General | Posted 13 years agoThis shaped up to be a movie week. Caught up with Wreck-it Ralph earlier this week. In case you didn't know, it's good. Rather good, definitely more deserving of the Best Animated Film Award than Brave, but we'll get to that later.
So, Oz the Great and Powerful. Only Sam Raimi could direct a prequel to the Wizard of Oz and include some lovely asides to the Evil Dead films. Oz in this film is beautiful, really fantastic. In one of the earlier scenes, when James Franco's Oz is fleeing with Mila Kunis' Theodora the Witch, my thought was, "This is the best Final Fantasy movie I've ever seen!" Although maybe that was because Theodora looked very much like Red Mage, right down to the white feathered plume in her hat. Don't tell me I'm the only one who thought that. She even casts Fire! Maybe even a full-on Firaga.
Loved the magic shown by the three witches, Theodora with her flame, Evanora and her eldritch lightning, and Glinda with her Prismatic power. Wait a sec... the one in red casts fire, the one who wears black is lightning, and the one in white uses light... like the Dia series of spells. This is the best Final Fantasy movie I've seen. Great magic battle effects, way better than the time Ian McKellan and Christopher Lee were pointing sticks at each other, hurling the other around like it's the Star Wars prequels.
In fact, Blizzard, please see Oz. Watch Oz and realize Raimi should have full reign over the Warcraft movie. C'mon, he took one epic setting that doesn't take itself seriously and did wondrously, and Oz and Azeroth share some letters. Coincidence? Yeah, but think of the possibilities.
And also I saw Brave, figured I should just to see if Wreck-it Ralph got robbed. And yeah, Ralph kind of did get the shaft. Pirates: Band of Misfits too. Brave just felt too inconsistent, unsure of what tone it wanted to set. Yes, it was pretty. Yes, it did have some funny moments. But as far as Pixar goes Brave just felt like going through the motions and checking off the Disney list.
Is there a princess? Yep.
Is she spunky? Yes.
Are her modern sensibilities out of sync with her traditionalist peers? Oh yeah.
Bear transformation? Yes, because if it worked for Brother Bear and was a part of the Beast's gestalt form then it's good enough for us.
To close, Brave was okay. Pixar can do better. The music was good, though at some points it would start up and I felt like I'd stumbled into the Grizzly Hills. And I now have the strangest urge to play Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Finally saw Wreck-it Ralph
General | Posted 13 years agoYes, it is quite good. Wait, it's fantastic. Lots of cameos and sight gags in the beginning flowing into quite a good story. Yeah, there's some rampant product placement and the rules seems kind of arbitrary, but that's a small price to pay for one of the most imaginative films I've seen in some time.
It's a shame I saw too late to change my Twitter handle to something (verb)-it (name). Not even sure what mine would be. Ah well, still a great film, and one more 2012 Oscar nominee I can add to the list. I'm looking at you Argo and Zero Dark Thirty.

I made a Weasyl Account
General | Posted 13 years agoAnd it can be found here: https://www.weasyl.com/profile/zigzagziggy
This, along with my SF page: http://zigzagziggy.sofurry.com/ are more for faving/following. Maybe I'll post more of my stories there since it looks like it's easier to showcase them there.
But make no mistake, FA is my homebase and I'm not likely to leave anytime soon.

FA United 6 plans are set
General | Posted 13 years agoTwo weeks ago was setting up all the plans for AC, today it was FA United's turn. I really do consider FAU my local con, even though it moved from 30 minutes away all the way to 80 minutes away. Loved the new hotel, and I hope this year the registration lines aren't... a complete jumbled mess.
Logistical hiccups aside, it really is one of the best cons when it comes to hanging out. You can find people there, as opposed to the sheer amount of wandering AC entails.
Man I can't wait for my Con season to begin. It's going to be torture waiting for July and AC. Also need to keep an eye out for when FurFright goes live. Hoping to get a room in the main hotel again, also hoping for substantially fewer hurricanes.
And I'm rambling again so I should stop here.

Going back to school
General | Posted 13 years agoNo, I'm not going back for a PhD. This is just for 8 weeks, from early March to early May. Taking a course to get my Human Resource certificate.
Anthrocon 2013 is a GO!
General | Posted 13 years agoYep, preregistered for AC a few days ago and today I snagged my room. For the third year I'll be at the William Penn Omni, three blocks from the Convention Center, from Thursday to Monday.
When it comes to roommates I have one person on as a 'maybe' so that leaves two more slots I'm looking to fill. Con's not until early July so there's time to decide. A slot will be $150, payment due before AC, with preference given to people I know at least somewhat (that means people I've met in meatspace, Facebook friends, people I follow on Twitter, or chat with via AIM or Skype). Yes I know it sounds like I'm being a hardass about it, but I don't want to get burned again by people who don't repay me.

2013 Convention Plans
General | Posted 13 years agoIt's that time again, time to formulate my plans for the convention season. February 1st sees hotel reservations open up for Anthrocon and it looks like I'll be going again. That may mean I'll be looking for roommates. But after 2012 I'll be a lot more discerning about candidates and getting money up front. I'd rather go it alone than get screwed out of room payment again.
Also, I tend to stick to cons within a day's driving distance, hence why I do AC, FA United, and Fur Fright. AC's the longest drive at 5 hours of PA Turnpike travel. That being said, something called Fur the More is happening just outside Baltimore in early April. That would make it the second closest con behind FA United, and by this point I can practically drive to Baltimore with my eyes closed.
So what I'm asking is, anyone ever been to Fur the More? Anyone going this year? I'm only kind of interested in it but I'd like to hear what it's like. Maybe change my mind.

I seek your recommendations!
General | Posted 13 years agoFirst off, anyone wanna' venture a suggestion for what to put on the sign in this picture?
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9545912
Secondly, I got a 3DSXL for Christmas (I was waiting for model that would be more comfortable to hold) but have yet to get any games for it. I want to get Super Mario 3D Land and Ocarina of Time (but this is the LAST time I'm going to buy this game, okay?) but I'm wondering what other games are good for it. How's that Mario Kart 7?

What Irritates Me About 'The Hobbit.'
General | Posted 13 years agoThe beginning of the movie was really good. I enjoyed all the little winking asides to people who read both 'The Hobbit' and The Lord of the Rings. Parts of the script were even taken right out of the narration from the book.
But what I don't get is how the movie can have so many bits from the book at the start and then proceed to get so much of everything else so completely wrong. And I'm not talking about swapping the name of some non-important background elf lord, I'm talking about huge, plot-rifts.
Well, that and every bit of CGI that didn't involve Gollum was laughably bad. Seriously, Azog (not even touching what a gigantic and intrusive rewrite he is) looked like he was made of plastic.

Halo 4
General | Posted 13 years agoWhy must your multiplayer be so fun?
And so nostalgic too? Seriously, if I was playing with the specter of a test or paper hanging over my head it would be just like college all over again.

It's that time again: Ask Me Anything!
General | Posted 13 years agoI find these to be really fun, so let's have another round and see what randomness ensues. You know how it works so fire away!
So... MAG Fest
General | Posted 13 years agoI was worrying that after FurFright I'd get slammed by three cons worth of post-con depression, and I'm not planning on any other fur cons until the next Anthrocon. Fortunately I have the luxury of an occupied horizon. Early January has MAG Fest, the Music and Gaming Festival in Maryland. And some friends and I are plotting going there.
If you've never been to MAGFest, it's like visiting the Internet, the good parts of the Net. The Escapist-y, That-Guy-With-The-Glasses-y, Penny-Arcade-y-but-not-PAX, let's-all-share-our-best-killstreaks-in-Halo kind of Internet. (Hopefully this year will see less of let's-shoehorn-MLP-into-every-available-moment). Also where I met
corvuspointer for the first time. (Go check him out if you haven't yet already. His art is superb).
So yeah, that's next on my social agenda. And hopefully it'll go far more smoothly than FurFright. January's out of hurricane season, right?
If you've never been to MAGFest, it's like visiting the Internet, the good parts of the Net. Long Overdue FurFright Post-Con Report
General | Posted 13 years agoIn short, FurFright was fun, really fun. I'm not going to comment any more on personal drama, overzealous/clueless security, early morning fire alarms, or the overhanging specter of Sandy. I'm going to focus on the good parts, and there were a lot of good parts. FF is a far more intimate con compared to, say, Anthrocon. Got to spend time with some of my favorite people and actually do stuff with them. Now to go over, in no particular order, are my best memories from the con. I apologize if I miss anyone, but the weekend was such a blur, especially considering the week I had afterward.
Hanging out in the bar lounge with
donryu,
kody,
beerhorse, and others. Also, Donryu is basically the best person ever. He has fun rolls. He knows what I mean.
knuxlight showed up, which was a great surprise considering how no one was expecting him. He's like a wizard that way.
The great mealtimes with
Brauner,
solusar,
dariuskoopa,
blickfen, Blick's bf Sol,
orthan, and
makoim. And Blick can attest that I am a terrible person.
Speaking of terrible people, so many awesome moments from Cards Against Humanity. Here's a tip if we ever play Cards together: I automatically award anyone who plays the answers "A sweaty panting leather daddy" or "being a mother-fucking sorcerer." Also a ton of great rounds of Red Dragon Inn and a few games of Zombie Flux.
And speaking of card games I went 4-0 against
dragoneer in Magic: The Gathering. By sheer accident my decks happened to be rather good counters to his, like how my equipment deck kept interfering with his targeted destruction deck. Hexproof is a great thing.
Watched "Prince of Space," one of my favorite episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (and also the first one I ever saw. Yes, I joined the club late).
Also,
lavin looks damn good in a kilt. I too have a kilt, and people who have kilts can discern such things.
That's all my storm-tossed mind can recall at the moment. I still have pieces to scan and upload. But I plan to go to next year's FurFright. Despite the... difficulties it's still a really fun time.I made a better minotaur build for Pathfinder
General | Posted 13 years agoAnd here it is:
Minotaur Racial Traits:
+2 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Dexterity: Minotaurs are strong and durable but lack grace.
Medium: Minotaurs are medium creatures and receive no penalties or bonuses due to their size.
Normal Speed: Minotaurs have a base land speed of 30 feet.
Gore: Minotaurs have horns and can deal 1d6 damage plus its Strength bonus. Minotaurs deal 2d6 +1-1/2 Strength bonus in a charge.
Tough Hide: Minotaurs have a +2 natural armor bonus.
Healthy: Minotaurs gain a +4 bonus on Fortitude saves against disease and poison, including magical diseases.
Keen Ears and Nose: Minotaurs receive a +2 bonus to Perception checks. Minotaurs can take the Scent ability as a feat.
Nature-savvy: Minotaurs receive a +1 bonus on Knowledge (Nature) and Survival checks.
Languages: Minotaurs begin speaking Common and Minotaur. Minotaurs with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following: Elven, Dwarven, Gnome, Giant, Goblin, and Orc.
It occurs to me that this could also be tweaked slightly to bring Tauren into the Pathfinder fold. I feel good about this build, it fits in with my vision of minotaurs (which is closer to WoW than Greek myth). They're hardy, a little clumsy, but suffer no penalties to mental ability scores. In fact, this looks more like what DnD 4e did with minotaurs, except, y'know, much better since it's Pathfinder.
