Favourite Villains of all time.
Okay, so my best buddy
phoenixrage16 recently posted a journal of him listing off his favourite animated villains, and I figured I should jump on the bandwagon, but with a slight twist. Instead of posting my favourite animated villains, I'm going to be doing a list of my favourite villains period, from any genre of movie, show, game, story etc.
The only rule to this is I will NOT be putting in villains from mine and
phoenixrage16's stories, as that would count as personal bias and not everyone knows about those villains like we do.
With that out of the way. let us begin.
Favourite Anime villain: Goku Black/Zamasu. Dragonball Super
Yes, starting off with a dragonball villain I know, but in this regard I feel it's well warranted. Goku Black was introduced with a fucking BANG during the Future Trunks Arc in Dragonball Super, even moreso in the manga, and it really gave us a sort of insight as to what Goku would be like as a villain. The most shocking thing about it was that it WORKED! It didn't feel like Akira Toriyama took a fanfic villain and copy pasted him into the show. He actually felt like a villain with grounded motivations and a plan that he believed truly would bring peace to the universe. He's one of those Morally Gray villains that has the best of intentions in mind, but is willing to go through any means necessary in order to achieve those goals. On top of that, Goku Black actually had me engaged in the story, and, to quote MasakoX, out of all the Dragonball villains I've seen, he's the only one that I TRULY felt genuine anger against, and when Vegeta pummeled him into the ground during their third rematch, it felt REAAAALLY cathartic, like "Yea bitch, you had that coming!!"
Overall, A strong villain with grounded morals and kept me engaged emotionally in the story. A solid 9/10.
Favourite movie villain: Thanos. Avengers: Infinity War/End Game
Again, like with Goku Black, another villain who's morally gray in the sense that he has the best intentions in mind, yet will go to any lengths in order to achieve those goals...the only difference being that he actually DID achieve his goal: To collect the six Infinity Stones and erase half of all life in the universe with the belief that the other half would thrive as a result. I seem to really be drawn to these kinds of villains as of late XD.
In all seriousness though, I do prefer the MCU version of Thanos than the Marvel Comics version. His back story actually made me feel a bit sorry for him, because his reason for wanting to purge half of all life in existence was due to the fact that he had seen it happen firsthand on his homeworld of Titan. To quote the Mad Titan: "Too many mouths, not enough to around." And his solution to the problem was "Genocide, but random, dispassionate, fair, to rich and poor alike." After hearing his reason to wanting to go through with this ludicrously insane plan...I kinda agreed with his reason, just not his methods. It's a problem we face in the real world as well, and while mass genocide SHOULDN'T be the answer, it's becoming more and more a possibility what with the state the world is in at the moment...
A very grounded villain portrayed by the legendary Josh Brolin, who I felt was MADE for that role, just as Iron Man was to RDJ and Ryan Reynolds to Deadpool. Solid 8/10.
Favourite cartoon villain: Grand Admiral Thrawn: Star Was Rebels Seasons 3 and 4.
Pretty much everything
phoenixrage16 said about him in his journal, I agree with completely. While I don't really have the same taste in tactics as he does, what really draws me to Thrawn was that he had that sort of calm, yet foreboding atmosphere around him that gave the impression he wasn't THAT bad a guy until he shows his brutality in the most composed manner. The guy BARELY ever gets rattled, and he takes into account all the possible outcomes of his plans during the Galactic Civil War. Even when Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren stole his TIE Defender Elite Prototype, he showed ZERO signs of anger, but rather he just took it as a chance to see what his project was capable of. I think the ONLY times I've seen him visibly pissed off was when he asked some imperial officer to place Hera's Kalikori totem in his office and the officer berates him for it, then Thrawn gets RIGHT in his face and practically growls at him for a brief moment before returning to his calm composure as if nothing happened, and again when Governor Price blew up the Fuel Depot on Lothal in order to kill Kanan, which led to the demise of Thrawn's TIE Defender Project.
I feel he was VERY well written and very well portrayed in the series, and I was REALLY happy they made both him AND the TIE Defender canon in the timeline. 8/10 for him.
Favourite video game villain: Handsome Jack: Borderlands 2.
His introduction was fucking hilarious. The transmissions he sends you throughout the game just made me laugh time and time again. It was REALLY hard to take him seriously at first until you start progressing further and further into the game, and you see that he's actually REALLY cunning and diabolical in his plan to destroy the Vault Hunters and the Crimson Raiders. That's what I like most about Handsome Jack. He starts off as a joke character, but then you REALLY see him as the main villain later in the game. However, when you play Borderlands the Pre-Sequel, you see a different side of him throughout that story. In that game, he comes off as a guy who was caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, and genuinely wanted to save a LOT of good people down on the moon of Elpis and have others view him as a hero. He was certainly more likeable in that regard, but in the same token, you also see what drove Jack to become the insane megalomaniac that you interact with in Borderlands 2. The guy was double crossed at EVERY turn, and it really made him develop some major trust issues, ESPECIALLY when he reached his breaking point at the end, where the Vault Hunters betrayed him one final time and visibly scarred him for life.
In conclusion, Handsome Jack is a prime example of the phrase "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." And in Jack's case, he certainly achieved the latter of that statement. 8/10 in my books.
That's about all I can think about at the moment. If I remember anymore, I'll be sure to edit them into this entry at a later date. I'd also like to extend an invitation to post your own favourite villains of all time and state your reasons. I know I'd be VERY interested in what you have to say~
For now. PEACE!
