Drift phonk is a form of Hip Hop-rooted Electronic music that emerged in the late 2010s.
Characterized by busy, noisy production inspired by lo-fi Memphis Rap beats, the genre features
heavy use of 808 cowbells (sometimes edited to play a melody) as well as samples of oldschool
Memphis rap and other rap tracks, which are usually heavily edited, looped, and "buried" in the mix.
Heavy compression, distorted percussion, and rhythms inspired by Trap are sometimes used as well.
Though the spread of the genre through the internet helped producers from all over the globe join
the emerging wave, it found particular popularity in Russia and Ukraine, where YouTube mixes of the
genre featuring imagery of car races and luxury cars became increasingly more popular towards the
late 2010s. While most drift phonk remained musically rooted in Memphis rhythms and tempos up until
the 2020s, a novel trend arose within the genre, characterized by four-on-the-floor rhythms and
House percussion - as well as occasional Synthwave influences - entirely lacking Memphis or trap
drums and rhythms, but retaining the "phonk"-y atmospheres and vocal samples.
