****FORGIVE THE REPOST! I reshot the piece with better lighting and a tripod and got something much closer to original colors and contrast.*****
The first shot will go in scraps.
10 x 14 color pencil
This is pretty much finished but I will probably be going back in and touch up a couple things after it sits for a few days. I hate back grounds! I wish I knew how to do something simple. The dunes and sky were quick and easy, but the rocks! Stupid rocks! I hate rocks!
Still learning to do shadows. MEH!
Had fun doing him and this won't be my last oryx or antelope.
I said I was going to post a short story with this piece, well, it is about 85% done and I will post soon. :)
****Critique is always welcome. It is one of my greatest learning tools.****

When I first started drawing again almost 3 years ago, I bought the huge Prismacolor set to try and used it them on my first couple pieces. (never had used color pencils before, just ink and graphite and a little oils and acrylics 30 years earlier) I had some issues with them so I bought a smaller set of Derwents and some Polychromos. The Derwents were OK but I didn't like there color coding. Then I tried The Polychromos. WHOA! Smooth, even application and I was able to layer them much better than Prismas. (I use LOTS of layering). With few exceptions I use nothing but the Polychromos now. They are a bit more expensive but I take advantage of Blicks great sales to cut the price way down.
The other thing that really improved my pencil work was when I started using Stonehinge paper (I get the large single sheets). I tried other brands but Stonehinge is #1 in my book and apparently is the choice for professional color pencil artists.
Sorry I sound kinda like a commercial but I am really sold on Polychromos and Stonehinge.
Hope I have been of some help and I am honored that you would ask my opinion. :)

You don't sound like a commercial at all. The input always seems more sincere when people go in depth. I have several large prisma sets but have been told the Faber-Castell polychromos are superior with blending capabilities. I need to look into them now that you're the third artist to stand by them.
The paper is also another thing I need to get down more. I use all types, but the graininess can be too much with certain papers and colored pencil.
Thank you very much for the input!

Thank you! I got a lot of comments on the hooves and I spent a lot of time trying to google good reference pictures but couldn't find anything very detailed. So I went to the page of the master of of hooves, (and many other things)
ecmajor and learned to do a proper hoof. :)

It took me awhile, but I finally see what I'm seeing. The background is beautifully done, and feels so strongly of Titan's background works.
I strongly suspect as a child, I was ADHD, or Aspengers. For I was in information sponge, and had nearly a photographic memory, total recall, and an intense concentration. So I absorbed information about everything and now it's sort of a large swimming pool of information that I see somewhat fuzzy at times. When I saw the print, I kept feeling like I know it from somewhere, and I see it was the background. I had to look up Titan's works in one of my books but that just confirmed it. You have some of the Renaissance master's skill in you which is another reason I so enjoy your works.
This is beautifully done, along with all of your prints. I went though your gallery here, and see so much beauty in them. They are an inspiration to my writing of the non-futuristic milieu

Thank you! The BG I took form an amalgam of photos of the Kalahari desert. Just chose what would be the simplest to draw.
You sound kinda like me. When I was a kid, if I was interested in something, I remembered everything I read and had a photographic memory (Yes, fuzzy at times, describes it.) of the event or pictures involved. Actually, I'm pretty much the same way now. Tons of miscellaneous bits of information from across the spectrum rattling around up there.
I am honored to have some influence on your stories.

Makes me want to draw an oryx myself. :)
Anyway, very well done. I'm happy to see you still improving. :)
As for the rocks ... I know what you mean, I hate painting rocks, too. Trying to simplify them a little and breaking them down into planes before adding detail really does help to get a better idea of the actual shape of the rock in real life.
Even so, I think your rocks look just fine considering what kind of rocks are to be found in a desert. :)

So many of the african antelope have such beautiful markings and horns and I had fun trying to interpret the markings to a bipedal form. I will be doing more. They are fun and easy but I will probably do minimal BGs on them.
Planes. I sort of did that when I started the rocks but I got tire before I finished them and just made marks here and there, It' all just a blur. :)
