The [mainland] Chinese Student Association asked me to draw this young lady, Ms. Zhang ShiQuan. Her parents died in an automobile accident at the intersection of Cooper St. and Pioneer Parkway in Arlington, Texas. The CSA (or whatever it was called) wanted to start a foundation to support her.
I haven't searched the town or the web to find out if you can still contribute to these people, or if this foundation even still exists. If anybody finds it before me, please post the link.
I wonder, is there an organization that keeps tabs on these funds and foundations and so on, and posts their relevant data? Who's in charge, where the money goes, etc.?

Oh wait, it was FACSS or whatever. I dunno what that stands for. The president of the org. who asked me to draw the picture was one of those highly extroverted and somewhat eccentric people from the Orient who seem to accumulate in the U.S.
I really hope it wasn't some kind of scam, but the guy I was involved with seemed on the level and didn't do anything that set off my con-man sensor.

I lol'd
Yeah, Arlington has its points, but it's still just a wide spot in the road.
The college makes no attempt to interact with the community. But fortunately, the students make the community is pretty neat all by itself. I was in Import Food Mkt. the other day and there were these African women in brocade robes and turbans billowing around, women in hijabs jabbering away into cell phones in the checkout line, Bosnians gesturing excitedly about some Bosnian thing, and several serious-looking glasses-wearing Hindus in the corner comparing images of Krishna and Ganesha. Next door at the Hue Noodle House, the proprietor was putting up photos of old Hue, the imperial palace, French officers, and a Bleriot airplane flying over Vietnam in 1909 or so.
It's not the sort of thing you see around a high-dollar school like TCU.

I'm thinking more about going back to school these days (I dunno if UTA's the place for me to pursue clinical psychology like I want to, though knowing the faculty is a plus). So maybe it's just the nostalgia, but I remember the college community being really friendly, no matter where you came from. I'm white as hell, but I was widely accepted. I even got to go to a meeting of the Asian American Journalists Association thanks to a friend. I met Lou Diamond Phillips there, woowoo! Also, the apartments around campus smelling like curry around dinnertime is one of my favorite memories. That and leaving work around midnight and seeing people playing cricket in the parking lot.
Even that damn Vietnam flag fiasco was kinda awesome, if a bit misguided.

Oh yeah, the curry and the cricket! All still happening...I got invited to play cricket with the guys but Jesus the way they LASH that ball at you is way too scary for me!
Knowing the faculty is a good start...I got accepted at a school where all the faculty were strangers, then decided to go back to UTA (also 1/10th as expensive). It's been very good to be able to walk into a professor's office and have them say "hey, what's goin' on?" as opposed to having to start from scratch.
