So. Much. Fun.
Haven't been this thrilled with the content of a commission in ages. River City Ransom was one of the defining games of the NES for me growing up, and it's always cool to run into people who share that love!
commission for
raganzi featuring Zillford as Player 2!
FunFact:
Zillford was hired as the lead sprite animator for the copyright-official sequel despite having no prior experience with anything but traditional animation. The game never saw the light of day due to the GBA's late-life glut of license/shovelware and a team-wide agreement to not trade the rights in exchange for publishing.
I still wonder if that was a bad decision, but we didn't want to see our baby given life only to have us summarily fired from any further production.
Want the whole story (and a much better write-up)? Click Here! While you're there check out the rest of the site, there's some real gems (and dross) that almost made it!
:EDIT:
and for people not in the know, the original NES game/cover being referenced: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_City_Ransom

My favorite part was going to the secret shop in the tunnel, fully upgrading my throw, and killing guys with a running throw of a baseball! XD
With it fully powered, you could whip that baseball at any enemy and one shot them (save for red shirt bosses I think)
Though, gotta always "Doh!" when you chuck a box or tire at an enemy, only to have it bounce back and hit you too! I've even had that be the cause of me dying before.

kinda?
We were pretty sure we'd get no legal hassle, our BIGGEST problem was that most publishers wanted licensed games or sequels to games proven to sell the previous year. The few who recognized the huge cult following of RCR and offered us publishing all demanded that we sign over the rights. Theoretically they would then give the property to developers they already worked close with and woulda kicked us to the curb for any further sequels.
Maybe it woulda been better to get ONE game at all, but we opted to hold out and eventually this ran us out of funds/ability to work pro-bono.
If only Kickstarter had existed then!
