Where does shi get those wonderful toys?
In space for this one, while looking for cheese on the moon.
So, shi tested it... and chaos ensued. Let's just say some Shakyn's weren't amused by this discovery. Neither was Russia (sorry about the big falling rock).
So, here's my latest acquisition, a 1:1 replica of the *checks the wiki* Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device or ASHPD (Gesundheit!).
As there are/were 4 different versions (Chell's, ATLAS', P-Body's and a customisable one), this is the last and most complete (it's like a Capcom game where you get a first version on Wii, then an improved version on PSP, then another on PS3, then another on Vita, then another on Wii U... and 3DS, for the same price. Except it's not a game and it's more expensive).
This one is entirely customisable and you can make a canon version or an entirely new one with the 4 nice blue and orange plastic stripes with magnetic backing to attach.
The stripes are well done, "stick" at the exact locations and don't budge when you shake the replica. A cool point.
The plier thingies glow thanks to a little red LED placed on each so they're not just 3 pieces of plastic stuck there. You can also extend them to your tastes on 2 axes:
-where they're connected to the gun
-where the LED are ("middle" of each plier)
The gun turns into a different color depending on which you choose (red, orange, purple and blue) thanks to a switch that allows you to choose a color scheme, based on Chell's, ATLAS' and P-Body's gun, namely red/orange, orange/blue and blue-purple.
You have sounds too, because it wouldn't be a portal gun replica without the sounds to go along with the lights.
Unfortunately, it's always like this, it requires a type of batteries that only a very few items use and that you, of course, don't have at hand. I'll get some and tell you how the sounds and lights are.
EDIT: So, the sounds are average at best. You'll recognize the 2 different sounds for the entry portal and exit portal, but you won't squee hearing them.
So, is this replica perfect?
Nope, sadly. First, it's in plastic. OK, nice plastic and it prevents the price from going off-the-charts, but the gun is very fragile. Just by unboxing it, I lost a (hopefully fake and useless) screw on one of the pliers and another plier wasn't stuck well with glue and goes loose easily. Hopefully, nothing some glue can fix. Still disappointing for such an official replica. For about $100, it's a cool prop to have for the fans, but a bit overpriced because of the random polishing.
Note that a stand exists (called "Portal ASHP Device Stand" if you're looking for it) for the gun and it's similar to the pedestal you get your upgraded gun from in the first game. Kinda overpriced as well as it's close to half the price of the gun itself.
Overall, is this replica a must-have?
If you're a fan of the game and are ready to tweak (read fix) some possible results of a bad test of quality, yep, no doubt at all. Just check your retailer for a possible price drop.
Bonus:
Me trying to get revenge on my evil cat for ruining my nights for 3 weeks already :
