Kind of more a thing of me beating up myself over but also bringing a point. Its no secret that people who've gained a lot of attention over time are kind of distanced from individuals. Its really no fault of their own, they just can't give every person their full attention when they have hundreds if not thousands of other fans clamoring for it at once. They also have to filter out people as well from the creepers, trolls, and haters, very hard to get close to them and a wrong first impression could send them hoofin' it in the other direction. And lets not forget, these still are real people with real people jobs and real people lives to take care of.
The reason this thought always still crosses my mind is me as an artist. I enjoy other artists, I think about art all the time. Not always furry art, but fine arts, design, prints and the like. I develop my style by observing other artists and taking traits from their work and applying it to my own. And most importantly I enjoy connecting with other artists. I want to know what makes them tick, how did they get where they are at with their style, where they want to go, what other things they try on the side.
Then I realize these are people that rather not be buggered any normal day of the week and just skip onto the next piece of art.

POPUFURS
See, this is why I attend streams so often. Even when it's somebody popular running it it provides a perfect opportunity to chat with them, and possibly get to know them. Otherwise, just shout on their page; be honest! "Hey, I'm a fellow artist and I'm curious about such-and-such! Would you mind having a chat sometime?" Or note 'em if they're flooded with shouts already. I dunno if you realize it but you are a good enough artist to warrant the attention of the big-names. :v

That's also something that troubles me, seeing a great artist, wanting to talk with them, sharing ideas and then getting that gut feeling: "They'll just feel like I'm wasting their time" and then I move on.
Seeing my own stats 'n art doesn't help either, I'm sure I'd get slapped with the 'not-worth-my-time' label instantly, regardless of my intentions. =w=

I think the hardest part is just saying hello. Personally I feel like I think way too much on the subject myself and create problems out of nothing.
I suppose the best thing you can do is really just give them a "Hi" or something, you might be surprised. Otherwise, jus' keep on doing what you do.
Also if we're talking stats, I'm pretty sure you tower way over quite a few people.

What's funny (not in a good way) is that the people with the intelligence, social competence, and just plain common sense to realize and understand the points you describe seem to be the ones who usually don't even bother to try - when they're the type of people you'd more likely >want< to respond to and talk more with.
While the people who don't think about this stuff are the ones who won't hesitate to make a hundred comments/notes/emails a week and cry 'elitist popufur' any time they're not getting full responsiveness back.
If you've got the sense and social competence to understand and not take it personally if someone isn't as responsive as you'd like, you've probably got a better than average chance of standing out from the crowd enough to get noticed and responded to. If you'd like to approach someone, there's no sense in not at least trying.

Not always true. I'm not an artist, but the same sort of thing happens with the "mega commissioners" that get a ton of watchers and views, and I've actually had people tell me that they were intimidated to contact me. But I like meeting new people. ^^; Obviously it won't always work out, I really only stay in contact with people that can hold up a conversation and who share at least some of my interests, but still, I'm not above saying hi and chatting with almost anyone. ^^
Not all of them are that way.. but I do know what you're saying. There are some that your comments are just a drop in a bucket and you never get a reply or any sort of acknowledgement.
Some are really nice and respond to questions/suggestions/comments.
I've been drawing in the fandom 10+ years and still feel like the little guy.. like 'the big names' are unapproachable.
