Not exactly pointless. It appears to suggest how one selfish act caused a butterfly effect resulting in mass death. This could also be carried on to point where all life on the planet is extinguished!
Or another moral of the story could be that everyone should learn to swim...or to not listen to inanimate objects offering to help. ;)
