There is only one police officer in the small town of West Woodburn, England. His name is Forty-Two, and he is a Dog. Genetically engineered and bred to conform to the ideal standard, he can do anything a human can. His kind are so dedicated to their task that society no longer sees any reason to pay for human police.
Forty-Two's quiet, rural life is shattered when a murderer begins stalking everyone the Dog has ever called friend.
The greatest scientific advancements come from war, and the Dog program is no exception. Originally developed as living weapons for World War II, it wasn't long after that they were repurposed to their current role. It's only been fifty years, and not all men have forgotten that Dogs, like their masters, fought on both sides.
Forty-Two must track down the killer and suppress the case before an inquiry can be launched. Any investigation into Forty-Two's own past would reveal that he too has secrets to hide. While he is far too young to have any memories of war, Forty-Two's unmasking would destroy all confidence in the Dogs that now carry the justice system.
And here we are, the end of Forty-Two's story. For now at least.
A big thank you to everyone who has read this far, and an extra thank you to those of you who have commented or faved. I hope you enjoyed the Police Dog.

Sorry I'm late in reading! Its been kind of hectic lately for me ^^;;
both chapters 13 and 14...... not a really informative ending, but definitely a conclusive ending, if that makes any sense?
I want to know what happens next, but it doesn't really matter. These chapters are just so great on their own!
When this last chapter started I had no idea what was going on... but the second I saw "Hello" I just knew it was Jonathan speaking and started crying >_<
Truly a poetic ending and a great commentary on life and purpose!
I'm not even sure I want a sequel... but to hell with it I wanna see more of Forty-Two that adorable bastard. In the mean time, time to read The Explorers...

It's great to know I didn't lose you there. I hope life hasn't been too troublesome.
I originally talked about writing Police Dog 2 in the Author’s Note but pulled it at the last moment because I wasn't quite ready for it. I do hope to have the opportunity to get back to it at some point though.
The ending is inconclusive as I wanted to leave people eager for the sequel.
I'm glad you liked the ending. I'll admit it's a bit odd, being in two parts, but it's the only ending I've ever written that I'm truly happy with.
Thanks again for reading and your support!

Oh you know, its just that my mom got so stressed out she had to get surgery due to part of her small intestine getting pinched and inflamced because I told her I was gay. No big deal! (Well, I mean... it SHOULDN'T be a big deal but I guess it is?)
It's only inconclusive in that I don't have all the information. Emotionally... it's over. I feel like I finally truly understand Forty-Two's heart (for now at least, he's bound to change after this experience). All that has happened in West Woodburn and with his beginnings has been wrapped up in a sense. It gave me that feeling of him screaming "I was here!" in these last moments.
My thoughts are kinda incoherent, I just wanna gush about it.
Like I said, I'd love a sequel, cause I love the story, but it would have to be far enough removed from the ending of this one so as to not ruin its ending. I've learned to be wary of Sequelitis.

You're thinking the Highway Patrol Dog from 'The Long Walk'?
I'd never thought of that! But it does fit surprisingly well...
This is going to make me sound way too geeky:
The Highway Patrol is intended to be my equivalent to Tolkien's 'Tom Bombadil' from Lord of the Rings. (Not that I'm a big fan of the character or the books...)
I can send you a note on the real purpose of the character if you like. Saying more would be a spoiler.
