Police Dog Chapter 1: Johnathan
There is only one police officer in the small town of West Woodburn, England. His name is Forty-Two, and he is a Dog. Genetically engineered and bred to conform to the ideal standard, he can do anything a human can. His kind are so dedicated to their task that society no longer sees any reason to pay for human police.
Forty-Two's quiet, rural life is shattered when a murderer begins stalking everyone the Dog has ever called friend.
The greatest scientific advancements come from war, and the Dog program is no exception. Originally developed as living weapons for World War II, it wasn't long after that they were repurposed to their current role. It's only been fifty years, and not all men have forgotten that Dogs, like their masters, fought on both sides.
Forty-Two must track down the killer and suppress the case before an inquiry can be launched. Any investigation into Forty-Two's own past would reveal that he too has secrets to hide. While he is far too young to have any memories of war, Forty-Two's unmasking would destroy all confidence in the Dogs that now carry the justice system.
It's here! Over a month behind when I originally planned to post it, but it's finally here!
For those of you who read the sneak peek you can skip to halfway down page five.
Hang around to the end of the chapter for an Author’s Note.
Comments and critiques, be they good, bad, or indifferent, are all welcome.
And on a lighter note: There was a chapter added to this book a year after it was originally finished. I was repreparing it for submission to another publisher with a preferred books with over 100k words. I'll leave it to you to figure out what chapter it is. Perhaps I'll have a prize for the first person to guess correctly...

I LIKE PRIZES
Good chapter! Too bad I'd already read most of it before in the preview haha
I normally love dark stories, but this one is really tearing me apart >_< (which is the point I guess?)
More plz?
If you do ever manage to publish anything, I'd like to be one of the first to buy a copy.

And what do you think would make a good prize, hmm? Perhaps a short story of your choice, or your character meeting the cast of The Hunters?
We'll have to see if you win...
Don't worry, a full second chapter will be up on Thursday. Expect the story to pick up quickly.
This is one of the few stories that I felt comfortable with in the end. Forty-Two goes through a lot. You'll have to decide if it's for the best.
Thanks for your support. You never know, I'm still chasing that elusive goal of getting published. Now that I have you on board I just have to convince a couple thousand more people!

Hmm... A short story of my choice. That'd be pretty cool. Or even like if you're writing another story the winner could decide on an important character's species or something. I dunno, whatever suits you :P It'll probably depend on the person who wins as well.
You just have to get the word out, try getting awards like the Ursa Major Award. I mean you have two full length books out already, it can't be that hard to put them somewhere noticeable. Heck, try just publishing on kindle. You can post stuff up for free, which people WILL pick up if they're browsing for those keywords. Once you got them reading one book, and they like it, it's a small sacrifice to pay for another when they KNOW it's going to be good.
You could also do a donation page or something and set up your own little mini website... though only webcomic artists do that usually (I think?). Just a thought!

Har and I manage a thousand words every few days and call it a chapter...
Found this serious, atmospheric and with strong undertones of mystery (Can't contact human blood, why? My guesses range from grim to...grim). Also, I felt a powerful empathy for Forty-Two, at odds with the world not only because he is different but because of his job. It resonates.
I enjoyed it and I'll drop by Thursday, or if it is delayed (and believe me I know how that can happen) whenever the next installment appears.
Had a laugh at your random selection of setting. Sometimes chaos can create wonders beyond anything that could ever be planned.

The art of forcing blood from a turnip (a.k.a. getting the word count out) is an acquired skill. A painfully acquired one.
And you're right. This story is one of my darkest. Forty-Two's life is not one of romping in sunlit fields and chewing milkbones. I think you'll enjoy it.
Barring FA going all pissy again, I'll be here! The story was written long ago, it's just finding an audience now.
