This is something I've been working on - a memorial for my cat, Booger who passed away in the early morning hours of March 6th, 2013.
She lived a long life and was very dear to my heart. She was my buddy and kept my grandma company while I was away at work. She loved to chat it up and had such a special personality. She was gentle, photogenic and loved attention.
I remember when I found her while waiting for the school bus one June morning in 1998. I rushed her down the hill to the house and handed her off to my mother, who kept her in the bathtub while I was at school. (The photo in the upper left corner was taken shortly after I came home and bathed her.) Not long after, we had her fixed and she became a part of the family. She would always wait at the top of the stairs until we came home. One of us could be carrying multiple bags of groceries and she wouldn't budge.
Her health began to decline in the first week of March. She didn't have much of an appetite, but she was still drinking water. She began to refuse both and was having difficulty keeping balanced on her back legs. Two days before she passed she lost control of her bladder, so I gently bathed her from the shoulders down in the kitchen sink so she wouldn't smell. I could tell by the way she was looking up at me that she was tired and didn't fuss about getting wet. I made sure she was warm and comfortable since she just wanted to sleep.
The night of March 5th, my mother set up a dog cage for her so she couldn't try to stumble about and mess through the house. I put the radio on softly and laid on the floor with her until 4am, Wednesday morning. I pet her gently and talked to her. I told her everything was okay, that she's not alone and she's very loved. She rested her head on my hand as she slept and she would let out a deep meow every now and then. I left her to sleep in bed for a couple of hours and after sleeping through my 7am alarm, I came in to the kitchen to discover she had passed. My grandma was with her just before that moment and told me she had passed on between 7 and 8am.
I'm still not used to seeing her food bowls and litter pan missing.
The house is too quiet without her.
