Chapter 4
“I don’t know what happened, Raven. One minute I was sitting at the river bank, practicing my skills, and he popped up out of nowhere!” I was pacing in front of our den while Raven sat and followed me with her eyes. The night before happened so quickly that it took my mind some time to process all of the information.
“And he said that he was not freaked out by our abilities?” Raven cocked her head to the side. The light of the sun streamed down upon us, making my black fur shine and hers reflect a soft blue.
“Yes he did. No one has ever said that to us before! Does he honestly mean it or was he just flirting with me? UGH!” My body dropped to the ground in exhaustion. Questions were buzzing around my mind like a swarm of bees. Putting one of my paws on my forehead I let out a soft sigh.
“So what if he is flirting with you? You should be happy. Males like him don’t go waltzing around here all the time. He is probably part of the select few that will ever like our abilities: mom and dad, our sisters, and even the shaman! The shaman, unlike grandpa, thinks our abilities are an incredible asset that must be used to help the clan. Since grandpa’s the chieftain he thinks that our abilities will just bring nothing but trouble. Luckily, he still loves us. If he did not love us he would’ve banished us as pups…leaving us to die or fend for ourselves. Yes, we’ve had to do that recently, but that’s because we’re able to now. If we were on our own as pups we would’ve died.” Raven slowly got up to lie down beside me.
Her words comforted me a bit. I had a wall to block everyone from the world to protect myself from rejection. Many have tried to dismantle it with toxic words. My only fear was that someone, like Glacier, would try to sweep me off my paws, but they then would slam me back onto the ground. I made a pledge to myself that I would not get in any romantic affairs. Raven’s silken tongue against my cheek brought me back to reality. I looked at her out of the corner of my eye and shook my head. Raven simply smiled and stood back up.
“The girls should be waking up soon. Eveline is probably going to do her own thing. I’m not sure what Kai and Golda are doing…Ebony is going with me to go hunting. Do you want to come with us?”
I shook my head and said, “No thanks. I think I’m going to see the shaman.”
“I thought he went on some spiritual journey.”
“He apparently is back. I need to ask him a few questions like ‘Why do we have these powers,’ ‘What are my visions about?’ and ‘What ransacked our den?’”
As I stood up Raven put her paw on my shoulder. “Better you than me. I’ll catch you later.”
Ebony came trotting out of the den with a smile on her face. “Morning! Ready to go, Raven?” Raven nodded at me before running off with Ebony.
Eveline came out as soon as they left, grimacing as the bright light hit her eyes. She then glared at me, eyes like daggers piercing the mind. I got up and stared back at her. She knew I was not afraid of her but she always tried to break me. Eveline then strutted in front of me and smirked. “Careful of that Glacier boy, Wuf. He might try to hurt you.” She chuckled as I simply wriggled my nose. She then turned on her heels and walked off to wherever she ventured off to.
I looked down slightly and noticed I still had the necklace on. The sight of it made me smile since it was part of my last connection to my mother. But it caused more questions to circulate in my mind. I had to get answers.

The sun had risen to the highest point in the sky as I reached the shaman’s den. Anyone could tell it was his den due to all the pots, pelts, and other accoutrements lying about. I pulled back the pelt door and stuck my head inside. My nose immediately filled with the smells of ash and berry paste. “Hello?” I called out and looked around the den. I could not see the shaman inside. I thought perhaps he had not returned yet. My thoughts were soon interrupted by the sounds of beads and bones clinking together. I turned around quickly as the shaman approached me.
“Well, hello, little one, though you’re not quite little anymore. You are a fully grown she-wolf now.” His sun-like eyes drew me in as he got closer. His fur had become completely gray. He still had beads entangled in his longer fur but he also wore a beaded bone and feather necklace. I cocked my head slightly and asked what it was.
“This?” He looked down at the necklace. “I have recently attained this on my journey. You earn them based on how much you have contributed and learned as a shaman…Now, what can I do for you, Water Wuf?”
“I have some questions. You seem to be the only person who might be able to answer them.”
“Of course, dear child. Come inside, and I shall answer what you need to know.

“These…visions, you say, occur every evening and are always the same.” The shaman scratched his chin as we sat by the fire.
“Except last night. Usually I see the fog approaching the valley from high above. This time I was in front of the god and it…it had these glowing red eyes. The shaman stopped scratching his chin as I mentioned the red eyes, imploring me to continue. “The eyes were completely red. There were no pupils. And…there were claws that came out of the fog at me…” I closed my eyes as the demonic voice rang in my head. “The fog spoke to me…Its voice was demonic…full of hatred and rage…”
The shaman quickly got up and searched about his den frantically. Soon after he came back with a gnaw bone in his maw. He dropped it at my feet and pointed to an engraving on it with his nose. “Is that what you saw?”
As I gazed upon the bone’s smooth, white surface I realized the engraving looked exactly like the fog I saw in my dream. I then looked down, seeing the name “Cain” etched below the picture.
“Cain…who’s Cain…?”
“Cain is a demon. Far beyond our lifetimes he was a tyrannical pack leader. He caused devastation and destruction wherever he set foot. The Great Spirit would not allow Cain to continue. It had all of the elements, water, air, fire, earth, wood, and metal, be used against him. The force of the elements was so great that they manifested into elemental spirits. These spirits attacked Cain, driving him down to the deepest depths of Hell. He swore that one day he would return and wreak havoc once more upon the land. The elemental spirits lay dormant until that day. They would then take form and defeat Cain once and for all. For now, Cain is at his weakest form. Once he takes his full-fledged demon form…Great Spirit help us all…”
I could hear and feel the sense of fear in his voice as he spoke. It rattled my bones and chilled me to the core. But there was one question I still needed to be answered.
“Sir?”
“Yes, Water Wuf.”
“Could you also tell me about this necklace?” I looked down at the blue orbed necklace. “I found it on a toy my mother gave me. Well…the others have similar toys and necklaces. When we first put them on they began to glow!”
He walked up to me and carefully inspected the necklace. He asked if the others had the symbols of the elements inside them. I told him yes, causing him to become more pensive.
“I am not sure, dear child. “ The shaman lifted his head back up. “I’ll have to look more into it. I shall call for you when I have the answer.”
