A commission I got from Chaluny on DA. It turned out beautiful! I'm so amazed by her artistic talents. :>
Anyway, I've been wanting a reference for Taboo for a long time, specifically of her ghoul form. It was hard to have a ghoul wolf without the ghoul version haha
GHOUL SPECIES ::
Origins :: The ghoul is a species originating within Limbo, the world between this one and the afterlife. When a creature living in the mortal world dies and is sent to Limbo, the color is wiped from their fur (and with it the memories of their life) and their soul becomes a tangible flame hovering above their body. Ghouls are created, they are not born.
Most ghouls are emotionless and unthinking; they don't speak, they don't sleep. They are unable to reabsorb their soul and connect it to their body, so they wander slowly and aimlessly through Limbo, their soul floating just a few taunting inches away from their flesh. These are the more common, however less fortunate.
Very few ghouls, by forces that are often unremembered to the ghoul itself, are able to latch onto their soul and connect it to themselves. With practice and determination, they can even contain it back within their body in a simulation of life. These ghouls are then expelled from Limbo and returned to earth because life cannot exist in the between world or in the afterlife. Slowly the thoughts and feelings of a living creature return to the ghoul and they are capable of living normally.
Diet :: Omnivorous. Ghouls often go for months without eating, but when they do choose to eat, they can stomach almost anything. Meats are the main part of their diet, as newly conscious ghouls often attempt to eat anything that moves, but later, when they have settled back into their mind, they usually try to mimic the diet they once had while truly alive.
Sounds :: New ghouls are almost completely silent, it's rare for them to make any sort of noise. Vocalizations are normally made when under great stress or when enraged. Various feline-like hisses are the most common sounds made, however they are capable of speaking and after years of consciousness, they are able to talk normally. When using mortal speech when their souls her outside their body, their voices are scratchy and they speak somewhat slowly, as if the words are hard to form.
Distinguishing Features ::
MASKS :: All Ghouls have white masks covering or partially covering their face. These masks are rarely decorated and come in no other color. If removed by anyone other than its owner, the ghoul will die. After consciousnesses, some masks develop slight color and grow distinguishing characteristics.
FLAMES :: Flames appear somewhere upon the ghoul, not always, but normally in large quantities. This is the physical manifestation of their soul.
EYES :: Ghouls who have not regained their consciousness have no eyes. It's only through reconnecting with their soul do their eyes reappear. They come in every color (reflecting what they were in life), but when their mask is present and their flames are out, their eyes normally change to the color of their soul.
COLORATION :: Ghouls are solid or primarily white until they're reawakening. Afterword, the white normally never completely disappears and very commonly remains their base color. Black, red, purple, and blue are normally the colors that emerge to repaint the ghouls.
Life Span :: A ghoul will likely live until it is killed in some other fashion and usually have no knowledge of their actual age.
