Name: Strype
Born: Ta-Mehu province, Nefer, [March 25, 14983 AD, Terran Calendar]
Oldest of 3 siblings, son of a military supply clerk and a child psychologist
Summarized History: Stumbled across unknown ancient artifact created by long-extinct xeno-civilization at age of 8. The artifact merged with Strype and re-formed itself around his heart, and granted him pyrokinetic and psychokinetic abilities. Entered Nefer's planetary defense service at earliest possible age (13th birthday) and was found to have talent as an airborne shock-trooper, colloquially known as "pouncers".
At age 20, lost legs to a heavy rail-cannon fired from a hover tank at the defence of the Planetary Palace, during the Seker Uprisings. He left the NPDS several months afterwards and established Khepra Shipyards, a small starship-building business, before moving on to found Steel Skull Studios, a studio dedicated to creating custom armor and weapons for clients from all over the Perseus Arm of the galaxy.
Personality: Instinctually hot-headed and impulsive, Strype has spent many long years tempering himself to be incredibly patient and understanding, with an optimistic and altruistic attitude. Experience has made him rather pragmatic with regards to most things, though he does understand and enjoy the more artistic things in life when he's more relaxed. He also has developed a confrontational attitude with regards to authority figures he feels have not earned their position or have lost sight of their purpose.
Combat: Raised in the Pouncer Squads of the NPDS, Strype is most comfortable in heavy power armor equipped with a jetpack. He was earmarked by his commanders for his cool head and superb marksmanship later in his career. Strype prefers ballistic weaponry, typically notably accurate assault rifles with explosive bullets that can double as marksman weapons. In melee, Strype tends to bring his favorite weapon, a custom 30lb Maul he's named "Daybreaker" to the party, and usually carries a very large combat knife with him as well. In all forms of combat, Strype fights with a brutally efficient, pragmatic style, free of extravagance or flourish. He's there to fight and win, and doesn't mind taking a few hits along the way
Other Info: Strype has a natural affinity with machinery and cybernetics. Often he is able to discern the mechanical workings of almost any device he can observe for a short while. He's also been noted to treat machinery and drones with uncommon respect, and has been caught thanking the machines he works with politely, regardless of their non-sentience. Interestingly, his equipment rarely, if ever, fails on him, and the armors, weapons and machines he's produced have shown similar reliability.
In social situations, Strype is very informal and light-hearted, quick to laughter, and is remarkably well-spoken. His voice is deep, like most tigers, but also carries with it a strange mechanical buzz. He has an artificial voicebox, but it is of very high-quality, and should be completely unnoticeable to even the most well-trained ears. Some suspect he just likes the sound of a low-quality artificial voice added to his own.
In regards to romance, Strype has been in a relationship with his loving mate, Cooper, for around 10 years. Though it's an open relationship, Strype has next to no mojo whatsoever, and on the rare occasion that he's in a sexy situation, he's often shy, awkward and unsure of what the hell to do, coming off as a bit of a dork. Hilarity Ensues.
Morally, Strype thinks himself as a fundamentally good person, is optimistic about most people, and at his core he is driven to do good in the universe. But he's also understanding of the fact that not all things are optimal, including himself. Embracing this imperfection has allowed him to recover quickly from his own failings.
Deep down, however, Strype suffers from a mild martyr complex. When stressed, he often throws himself into his tasks with reckless abandon, often putting himself at risk with the intent of sacrificing himself for a greater cause. While providing some benefits, such as the ability to ignore physical pain when in such a driven state, it has made many of his friends worried for his health, both physical and mental.
As a final note: It is highly advisable not to get on Strype's bad side. Though he is rather slow to anger, understanding of people's flaws, and easy to get along with, shows of blatant, inexplicable malicious intent are often met with an incredibly hostile response. Strype's reaction to high levels of frustration is often very hot, emotional and ineffectual, but his true anger is as cold as the void, and he is very patient and can be tremendously sadistic, and very forgiving of himself for whatever he does if he truly feels justified.

Because I haven't updated it since 2010. Note a whole lot of external differences besides the headplate and plugs. Internally, that's a whole other matter, as he's decked the hell out with all kinds of cybernetics, but that's something for a completely different sheet.
Also, no naughty bits on this for a reason: Strype is not really a sexual character. If you really must know about his genitals, you'll have to ask me directly (and please don't unless I already know you)
Character and Art © This guy, right here, me! (no, you may not use my character for roleplaying purposes EVER)
PS: Before anyone asks, I AM NOT open for ref sheet commissions. I have no intention of ever opening up for them. Reason being that in order to make a ref sheet and make it feel worth it, I must be deeply personally invested in it. These things are hell to make.
PSS: The main pose is indeed from a rather recent 40K chaos champion model. I intend to buy the model as a thank-you to GW for the kickass pose.

I don't know why but every time i look at those cybernetic legs I keep thinking of that dance training sequence from Flashdance. I have no idea why. And now I can't stop imagining a chibi Strype ona fold out chair pulling a rope to get dunked by water.
Why brain, why? 8S
He just looks so light on his feet...maybe that's it.
...Nice refsheet tho!

I've taken a look-see to see if I can find more information aobut getting such a necklace. From what I can tell it's damn-near impossible to get them shipped, but taking one across the borner is do-able. Maybe if handed to me in person at a con or something. I'll dig a bit deeper into it, cuz I REALLY want one
Uplifted Bengal Tiger? How do you mean, "uplifted"?
Sweet sheet. o3o; I like that closet-full of cybernetic/bionic legs idea. Funny thing, I was trying to design something similar for my character (who I mentioned a few minutes ago), and I could never set a single design, so when commissioning things of him, I let the artist draw whatever for the limbs, and each design he'd then have in his closet; then I read that you've done the same thing. xD;

This is my favorite sheet of yours yet, and i've gotta say Strype's one of my top favorite characters on this site. Wicked cool art style you have and I just love how he's all put together! Somehow he just 'works', like, he's not just some random clusterfuck of a character just thrown together on a whim. You can tell he's had a lot of work and meaning put into him over the years and I admire that. Also your keywords are always enjoyable to read. Can't wait to see more new artwork of this guy! :D
....I think my mind just asploded from Awesome Overload.
Fan-spazzing aside, this looks awesome. As you said, ref sheets are quite personal pieces, but the quality here is obvious. If you do consider going full on with your art like you mentioned in the Journal, I see you going far given the sheer quality of work you do, man. Fantastic.

So he is a badass Marry Sue? I mean, I can't really find anything about him that is flawed O.o He is perfect at pretty much all kinds of combat, he is the ultimate goody-good in terms of morals... Ok he is a little out of shape but other than that he is like a walking, indestructable tank.
It's like he is too badass, I just find characters like this to be really boring because here is nothing they fail at :T
But hey, I have always been nitpicky when it comes to fiction^^ And since I come here mostly for drawn art and photography this isn't much of a problem for me.
Other than that, the sheet itself does look awesome!

I'd say he's a bit more balanced and solid. He's good at combat, but not, like, a horrifying combat-monster that a lot of characters are, with shitloads of special abilities and style. He gets the job done, but in-universe, he's far from the best. Often, others in higher ranks in the 'verse are much better shots, or can whoop his ass in close combat, and he's often first to scramble to cover when caught under heavy suppressing fire. One could easily be forgiven for thinking him as a badass sue, as I haven't really delved into any other characters in the 'verse yet. Think of him as the slightly above-average, pragmatic soldier, but he definitely inhabits a World of Badass to which he more or less lands right in the middle.
In general, Strype's flaws are psychological. He's got a problem with authority which has held him back, and while he's a generally good person, he's certainly not flawless in that regard, and isn't above dirty fighting, ambushes, aerial bombardment, and setting people on fire if it suits his goals. Also, I forgot to add that he REALLY doesn't like the cold, and in general will actively avoid enemies with cold-based abilities and weapons, and won't go to colder climates unless he absolutely has to. He's not really any more vulnerable to them than anyone else, but again, it's a psychological thing. His morale diminishes as the temperature drops, and conversely, he's mentally at his best when he and everything around him is on fire.
Another requirement for a Sue would be that they're a character that inevitably drags the narrative to focus on them, and causes other characters to act differently than established canon towards them, and that is definitely not the intent with Strype. He's the side character with his own little agenda, who's only in the story because his path happens to coincide with the protagonists. For example, he'd likely be the guy flying the ship to drop the story's protagonists off at the setting, then fly away because he has to make deliveries (he does, after all, run a business making power armor and weapons) and occasionally swooping back in to do them a favor because he happened to like something about them and taking out one or two grunts that are pinning them down is no biggie. He'll also offer the occasional insight to the protagonists if he feels it's worth saying (though not necessarily a completely correct insight).
TL:DR: Looks like a badass sue due to the lack of context of a story, but he's just a solid, combat-oriented side character who sits in the midrange of badassery of his universe.

The lack of story might explain why he does make a Marry Sue-like impression to me.
Or maybe I'm just bored by fiction a little because every single freaking character that I came across in the last few years (be it games, most movies or otherwise) has kind of been too perfect.

I hear ya there. Sometimes it's really easy to fall into the trap of having an "ideal" character. I won't deny there's a certain degree of wish fulfillment in my character, but flawless is boring. He's a rounded character who's not the best nor worst at anything, and happens to be pretty good in combat and kinda lousy in the bedroom XD
I like what you've made, really, but the psychic powers bug me, so here's some food for thought:
You say he's immune to heat damage, but to what extent? Surely he cannot survive a prolonged plunge into a sun or boiling lava, right (the heat from lava can already reach temperatures around 1750 degrees C)? Also, considering he can wear power armour and all, does the immunity spread to the armour or does it get burnt and damaged if he were to accidentally go pyrokinetic from within? Again, if he goes psychokinetic while in a powered suit, does that mean the grasp of his hand could accidentally break the suit's glove armour from within?
As weird as it sounds, I think your character's pretty badass without the psychic powers.

He's immune to the damage to a certain point. Boiling lava is about the upper point of what he can endure, but his gear does nto share the same resistance. He does, however, make his own suit out of more heat-resistant materials, and builds them to resist his own flare-ups (and also tends to be lax about the cooling systems and heat shielding from the suit's generator, which at the very least ensures that nobody's gonna steal his suit without being cooked to death by it)
That makes sense, though Strype will have to watch out that the excess heat doesn't damage the other, more delicate electronic systems in the suit. Still, keep at it, Strype's looking real good there regardless.
P.S. What about the psychokinesis grip strength affecting the power suit glove?

I tend to refrain from mentioning specific materials because it tends to date the work, and also the possibility of completely screwing it up and having someone who has education in materials technologies go "that's a horrible idea". I might try to come up with some materials of my own, but that's something for later
"The hardest part I find about making these for myself is trying not to overload people with information"
And that may be one of the reasons why i'm searching through the comments just to see if you give even more information.
While I do agree that in this case it shouldn't be given so much info, it's so great to read about the concepts behind a character. He feels even more alive, cooler and captivating with a backstory. No wonder (and somehow obvious) why writing is more important than drawing in comics.
Additionally, I liked the out of shape detail. I don't see this kind of "flaw" often, especially on protagonists. It's hard to make a really imperfect, yet strong character. xD

Gotta say, I love the design of your character; heck, he inspired the creation of an alien race in a Rifts game my buddies and I are running, the Tirren! Speaking of which, since you were the (HEAVY) inspiration, I figured I should ask permission; would you have any problem with me using some of your pictures as references for them, especially should I get a reference drawing done of them? The biggest inspiration was the picture of Strype here carrying the gatling gun in one arm, what looked like a powerfist on the other, and had a scantily-clad canid woman riding on his shoulders while toting a missile launcher and pistol. I'd try to find it to link it, but...well, my net's being a bit of a bitch at the moment :X Anyways...would there be any problem if I were to use that particular pic for reference? Just love that anatomy, the longer, thick neck, forward-set head, the musclegut, the massive shoulders...
Meh. Not the response I was hoping for. :T Well, maybe I could get some input then? That image was just...REALLY inspirational, and I -want- to find a way to set them apart from that. And I don't mean saying that the image -IS- them, I mean using the body structure -IN- the image as a reference for how they're built.
Well, there are a lot of artists around FA that would fit the bill. The image you were talkin about is in my gallery. You could link it to them and let them know in what ways you'd want it to be different (I'd offer to do it myself, but I'm rather deep in work I already owe, plus I'm a fair bit more expensive than others)
Right. if it wasn't for the cost vs. my limited budget, I'd GLADLY come to you! XD If you ever want to talk sometime, I'd love to! I could tell you a bit about the species I created, and maybe then we could discuss possible physiological differences/adaptations/etc.? Might be something fun. :3
Great character dude. I've always liked the backstory and intricacy that you've put into him. Powerful, but not without flaws, although I do vaguely remember the last ref sheet you did before the redesign. Definitely more Mary Sue back then, but that was a pretty fantastic piece of art (as most of your work is).
Man, you have fantasy and talent. I totally love the story. I always want to find someone who like bionic and mechanic addons, cybernetic stuff and who can dream a big one to create a world in the far future. I'm corrently working my story and when I finished (and translated from Hungarian) I will show you. I bet you will love it too.
Keep this stuff going, interesting tiger!

Used to own a necklace like that once. Sadly it stoped eorking after a few years. That's the downside with tritium, and these days I can't find them anywhere. The ones that I do find are these boring keychains and small details that fit better for children...
Damn I miss that necklace :c
