“…inside your mind.”
A single claw tapped against her forehead as she glanced around, her gunblade’s tip scraped against the deteriorating asphalt-a flash of sparks jumping up as she did so- though she paid it no mind as she was lost in her thoughts for a brief moment.
Her fur stood on its end along her back and neck. She could almost feel the anguish from his assault lingering in the air; it was haunting. She knew she should have been concerned about what looked like an endless wave of chaos that had swept through the city- its inhabitants now long gone; the streets- or rather, what was left of them, were littered with bits of debris, newspapers, cigarette butts and trails of blood. She shrugged to herself knowing full well there was nothing she could have done to stop him anyway- the sick bastard had a thrill for destruction; he would have killed them anyway, even if she had been here in time. Thankfully, some of the lucky ones were able to evacuate out of the city in between the chaos and mass destruction- at the cost of their memories, everything they once knew to be normal and the deceased left behind. The rest, however, were not as lucky as their corpses were littered throughout the rubble of what was once a bustling and industrious city full of promise and growth-
…all gone now, just like her original purpose in life.
She paused and picked up one of the newspaper pages that swept over one of the decomposing corpses lying idly in the middle of the street and glanced at the date: February 14, 20--. “Huh, I see…” A smirk crossed her face as she skimmed over the paper; a smeared image of a well-dressed female, obviously the city’s mayor or some other bigwig was on the center page with the headline Tomorrow Will Be a New and Better Day for Us!
“Well…never said my visit would be pleasant" she thought to herself as she let out an exasperated sigh, her hands idly crinkled and balled up the newspaper while she planned her next move. Part of her almost felt bad for allowing him to turn the city into shambles- almost, but she knew he wouldn't take any mercy on her if he found her first. Better he took his rage out on someone else first. Probably not the best or most empathetic logic but at this point she was indifferent on the matter. All she wanted to do was find him and bring him down like the worthless piece of crap that he was. Then maybe, just maybe she could have a peace of mind after all of these...
"Meh, it's too soon to even think like that" she scolded herself for even thinking such a notion; suppressing her inner thoughts. There was a reason it was called the past: you live it, learn from it and hopefully? Learn not to screw up the future. She knew that and yet? The memories from her past wouldn't grant her redemption to live in the present- or move on with her future until this situation was squared away.
Flicking open the balled up newspaper, she glanced at the headline once more before scoffing and tossing it aside. She looked up at the sky and shook her head- a thick cloud of smoke formed off in the horizon. Her ears slightly twitched as an air raid siren sounded off in the distance- probably from the next city over in a crude yet futile attempt to evacuate what few stragglers were left behind. Adjusting her glasses over the tip of her nose, a glimmer of sun reflected against the lens as she moved on…

I dare say this is one of my favorite commissions of Whisper to date. Going for an apocalyptic/doomsday feel with a hint of “kick any and everyone’s butts that get in her way” vibe. Whisper’s out for blood and vengeance. *raises a brow* Did you upset her today? May the gods have mercy on your soul if you did…
Done by the awesome Cylnx- gracias for the awesome work, time and effort you put into this piece. If you’re not watching him, go check out his work

Freakin' awesome. Amazing attention to detail, etc, etc... and did I mention that FF8 is the only FF game I've ever really played? Love the choice of Squall's gunblade. :D
As long as the artist can do cars pretty well, I think I found who I'm going to commission for a pic idea I'm having.

*laughs* I'm glad you like it! coming from you that means a lot- though I may cut the story out (it's over 2 pages long in word) as it's a bit long but I wanted something to accompany the picture.
But definitely! cy is soo much fun to work with and he streams all his work so you can watch him as he makes it so it's how -you- want it to look. I'll tell ya more via messenger but you should definitely get something from him. You know how picky am I when it comes to art and he's worth it

That's pretty cool, but the gunblade completely takes me out of the experience. It's not so much that it's a gunblade, but rather it's the gunblade. Squall's gunblade. It's not only a copyrighted item from a completely different story, but it's the symbol of a copyrighted character. In this image, the weapon has absolutely nothing to do with the character wielding it. To me, that's like having your character wield the Master Sword from Legend of Zelda.
Gunblades are pretty awesome yet it saddens me when people make original characters wielding an iconic weapon directly from a video game. Plus, there are thousands of different types of guns and thousands of swords. Why must someone make their gunblade be the exact same design as that of protagonist's weapon from Final Fantasy 8? Especially when it's technically not gun-sword, failing to take advantage of the awesome hybrid design of the weapon.

Ah, I have to say I found your point quite interesting cyrad.
Truth be told, when I first requested this commission, I wanted my char to have an unique look- including weapon that would make her stand out from just a typical sword or gun. And yes, I did in fact choose Squall's weapon because out of all the FF series, after Sephiroth's masamune, it's my favorite weapon (and honestly I would have choosen that but to be blunt, I just couldn't see my char properly holding masamune, much less anything similiar to it due to its length.
This piece wasn't meant to "steal" or mimic his infamous weapon but rather honor it and the enjoyment (and a little bit of rage) both myself and all the other gamers out there have gained from this game. Plus, I consider the gunblade more of a sword than gun. I have to admit, at first the dynamics of this weapon frustrated me...a lot. I mean really? it's a sword with a gun but logically you can't shoot it or you'd destroy it *shrugs* Believe me, I've analyzed the dynamics of the weapon over the years and I've learned to just leave it be, lol.
But I digress- thank you so much for the comment and your insight! I can assure you there are several people that don't like gunblades, or heck FF8 but still enjoy the concept of the art itself and work put into it. I hope you can too~

When original characters are portrayed with iconic copyrighted weapons, I don't see it as "honoring" the source material because it's being taken completely out of context and has no relevance on the character and events portrayed in the image/story. When something gets taken out of context, it tends to lose its original meaning that make it a strong icon. Instead of getting honored, the icon gets downgraded. In Final Fantasy 8, this gunblade is the icon that not only symbolizes the hero but also represents the modern-fantasy world of the game. Here, it's just a weapon -- nothing more.
It's also much worse if the weapon only makes sense in the world it came from. For example, Keyblades are meaningless in any story not set in the world of Kingdom Hearts.
Having a copyrighted weapon or icon also undermines the value of the original character. The gunblade distracts from the character and raises many questions. Why does she wield Squall's gunblade? What does this have to do with Squall and Final Fantasy 8? Did Squall go to Hell and she stole it from him? Using a copyrighted icon creates an association with the game, setting, and character. If these associations are not relevant, it distracts from the original character and story. The associations also make the original character and story come off as not being able to stand on their own as creative works.
This is why it makes me cringe when this happens. In my perspective, having a copyrighted weapon or icon tarnishes an otherwise awesome image and story. I agree the artwork is pretty good.
FF8's gunblades are technically not a gun-swords. It's just a sword that emits a vibration when you pull the trigger. The designer made it look like a gun just because he thought it looked cool. Actual gun-swords existed in history and were swords with a functional gun on the hilt. In fact, they were standard issue in the US Navy for a period. You can be very creative when it comes to designing a gunblade.

Well keep in mind that this is meant to be a piece of art not meant to be taken seriously. Though if you wanted to go in that direction, I suppose you could say that perhaps Whisper did go into the depths of hell, the world of FF8, dueled Squall and because he was honored that she stood up to him or even defeated him? Yes, she could have been rewarded his gunblade *chuckles*
Sounds nonsensical doesn't it? or does it? My point is, this commission is not meant to be analyzed, insulting or even take away from the original gunblade. And though I see where you're coming from, I have to ask that you respect both my choice in requesting this and the artist's hardwork he put into making this piece look so wonderful, even if you don't agree with it. As an avid gamer, I'd never do anything to "insult" the ff fanchise. And, if for some reason SE is offended by this, well then I'll handle it then, haha.
Hmm, you've done your research on gunblades I see! you even made your own version in SL (impressive). I have to say overall I still prefer swords to guns due to their mobility though.

You're welcome. ^-^
I'm glad you like the idea. Such long legs would look gret in them and make for cool images of her using some leg moves. ^^
Maybe, since you don't like shoes, it could be black bandages that wrap from the thigh to the foot, leaving the heal and toe open. Although that wouldn't be as effective in leg moves. :3
