It's February 17th, 2008, and I'm watching the Daytona 500 as I sketch this. This big race is the Superbowl of auto racing so you need your soda, chips, and pizza to watch it properly.
Oh, sure it's beautiful blue skies outside, but ... but... it's NASCAR!

It's been too quiet of a race so far. No crashes, only one caution out for debris, nothing really extraordinary going on yet.
51 laps to go.
The two drivers I watch are the 43 of Bobby Labonte and 45 of Kyle Petty. I expect Kyle to finish in the 35-43 range, but I'm hoping for a good solid finish for Labonte. I really want to see a Petty Enterprises car in the winner's circle again this year.

NASCAR, the most snooze-inducing motorsport that's EVER been created. But oh well, to each his own I guess. =3
Nice picture Flinters and a really good overall composition that suggests just how eager and comfortable you are as you watch the "big event"... Just don't expect me to be watching with you! :)

"Oh look, they're turning left! Whooooo!"
No offense, but I cannot understand why people like NASCAR. However, it ain't me place to dictate what people should like, so I'll clam up. This is a cool pic though, no argument against that. Though wouldn't it be uncomfortable for a roo to sit like that?
(by the way, what does NASCAR stand for? It's an acronym, ain't it?)

The sport is so heavily regulated, it's a real driver's sport where the driver can make or break a car. Well, the car also breaks but it's about putting everything on the very thin razor's edge and dancing there for 500 laps. Can you do it, can you walk that line without falling off? Do you think you could tweak the shocks or spring rubbers just a little bit to gain that minor advantage? Perhaps you make the wrong adjustment and it gets worse.
There's all sorts of things that can go wrong, so keeping things right on the point of breaking is exciting. The fact that they always turn left is a concession to keeping it a spectator sport- a person in the grandstand can see the entire course as opposed to a road course where you can at best only see one corner out of a dozen and have no idea what is going on anyplace else on the track.
It's a different appeal. No better or worse than any other type of racing, it just happens to be the one that I like.

"Wait, wait a second. You mean you sit there and watch corporate logos tacked to race cars, going around the same track 200 times?"
"Yup! Or 300, or 500."
"Isn't that awfully boring? I'd rather watch my window glass flow."
"Nope. You just don't understand what makes it cool. It's not just the cars going around in circles. It's the racing community... the characters driving the cars... the teams supporting the cars... the crew cheifs and drivers wrangling to make hard decisions... split-second reactions to situations that could end a race... the close calls... the battle of metal, rubber, and plastic against the terrible stresses of being run to their limits... the battle of driver against mental and physical fatigue... the strategies, the work behind the scenes that make this a fun and relatively safe sport, the technology, the everything that is much more than cars going around in circles."
For those of you who just don't get it, well, that's fine. Auto racing's not for everyone, but for those who do get it, it's one of the coolest things in the world.
*salutes to Flinters for this drawing; was doing just the same thing all afternoon and having great enjoyment from doing it, after having waited through a long, cold winter for the engines to fire once again*
What'd you think about the whole crowd giving the command to start engines? I thought it was waaay cool. Just wish FOX's audio had picked it up a bit better!

I've seen races where the crowd is invited to say the magic words before. It doesn't really work. Some people try to be creative in their starting announcement. There's only so much you can do with it. Comedians do the best, and I think Will Farrel did the best on of all time there since he was attending the race fully in character as Ricky Bobby.
The Daytona is also very important as it is sort of the first sign of spring for me.

"Gentlemen, and Jimmy Spencer, start your engines." I've heard some good commands to start (including Will Ferrell's!), but that's the only one that had me laughing long after it was done.
The year's come full-circle; the racing season is renewed, renovated, renamed and revamped. Bring on the spring, and the roundy-round!

I've been watching NASCAR for 21 years. I'm a die-hard fan. I don't really back any particular driver any more. Dale Earnhardt Sr. used to be my man, but I haven't found another driver I've liked as much as him. I've been watching the sport for so long, though, I can actually follow each driver and I know the story behind every one.
I have a habit of calling something or saying something just moments before they say it on TV. I could be a commentator. >.>
Last year, I hooked OrangeBunnyBoy on NASCAR and I helped him pick a driver he might like. His driver? ...Ryan Newman. He is SO jazzed!
I'd like to see Kyle Petty win too. He deserves better than where he's at. He's a veteran that should be further up in the pack. His third fasted time in practice was promising, but I really think he needs something in that race team still to make him a contender.
Bobby Labonte, he's another veteran, but again, he doesn't seem to be with a team that can compete. He makes some smart decisions that gets him higher up in the field, but unfortunately he can't stay there for long. I think that race is lacking an important component as well.
I like the Petty cars, though, and I too would like to see a Petty car in victory lane. ^^
For this new year, I'm going to pick a car I believe will stand out and go to the front more. Watch Reed Sorenson. I picked him for my fantasy racing league this year and he may have seemed like a wild car pick, but, I'm telling ya... that 5th place finish was more than luck. I expect a lot more top five finishes from that number 41 this year.
