I can see a few hoses that might need replacing, but at least you can see the motor.
When you open up my hood, all you see is plastic.
My grandpa drove himself half-mad trying to replace my battery; after 10 hours, he still couldn't get to it.

i am aware of the EX being a trim,also meaning an EX compared to an LX is different, mine is an LX but the 91's did not come standard with vtec, the next gen however did come with vtec, IE the f22b1 witch is what i got. perhaps there is another place w can chat, if you would like to talk about this?
I know the 91's didn't hence my mention of of mid 90's accords. :p You never specified which year yours was, nor the model. As you noted it had an engine with a variable cam I made the guess it may be a mid 90s EX. So it yours is a 91LX with an F22B1, then yes, it stands to reason the motor was swapped at some point. Which begs me the question of, if they bothered with all the work to swap in an F22B1, why didn't they put in a better motor like the H22A4 or similar.
Any manner of bolt or mounting patterns are non issues as Hasport makes mounts to put just about any Honda motor into any Honda car, hence why H22 and B18 CRXs even exist. Also, an F22 and H22 are basically the same motor (well, more or less anyways) and mount with the same hardware in most applications. As for the VSS, never had an issue with one so I've no idea what goes into working on the speed sensor.
V6 - Close enough displacement wise to a 3.0L. Originally just under 3.0L pushing out 270hp (C30A), later models just over 3.0L pushing out 290hp (C32B). Much of the car's speed was due to the very light frame.
They are however, not particularly fun to drive unless you have a lot of clear road. The driver's seat is more like a cockpit with the driver lying partially under the steering wheel. Because of the high performance standards and very nice clutch, at speeds under 20 miles an hour your are either feathering the clutch madly or stalling out. I was one of the only people at the Sears auto-shop that I worked at that was given permission to work on a Customer's NSX. Oh, and the ground clearance on the one I worked with was just around maybe 2 inches. Not fun in a parking lot :P I am not sure if the person had it specially tuned or whatnot, since I didn't really get to dig under the hood all that much on it.
Oddly though, they didn't want to let me touch the DeLorean. Go figure.
Also in terms of performance, you'll get a faster spool out of a I6 then a V8. The current 4.0L V8s that BMW makes are rather frightening beasts, though. Too out of my range to even bother test driving one, although at once point my mother was trying to push me to buy a M5 for my next car because she likes BMWs...
Oh yeah, and V8 engines are heavy :( Although not quite as heavy as my old RVs Industrial Slant 6. Talk about overbuilt...

Big block V8's are heavy, aye. Small blocks, like the Vette's aren't quite as heavy, but Dodge's big V8 Hemi's are gigantic, heavy monsters. And yeah, BMW's are great, but the M3 is better in every way than the M5. Don't get the competition package. It's just a little button that makes the car far worse, and does nothing else. You'd be spending nearly 10 grand for a worse car. The standard M3 is cheap, the epitome of perfomance sports sedans, and amazing fun to drive on the road, at the track, and overall just to own. Also, doesn't the M5 have a huge V10? That thing will guzzle gas.
They aren't that bad, although stubby wrenches are your friend! You can do a lot of work through the wheel well too.
Agree with everything you mentioned about the basic maintenance. Good stuff to do. I'd possibly add in a transmission service if there isn't a record of one - generally I recommend exchanging all fluids if possible unless you can verify their health (like coolant)!

That's a 91? That's in damn good shape for a 91.
Yeah, it could be cleaned up, but that's a lot of hours of wire brush dremels, blaster PB and Mother's polish. Not something who isn't a motorhead usually does.
Since she's taking it to a mechanic for a checkup, I'm guessing she isn't a motorhead.
Working on cars might be easy, but the tools required can get more expensive than the largest set of prisma markers.
