***NOTE: Better color here! https://www.weasyl.com/submission/206960 Fixed the color here some too.
10 x 14 color pencil and a bit of Pitt brush pen
note: some colors are completely missing in this camera shot and it should be much darker! Sicks not having a scanner! Gonna be professionally scanned tomorrow though :)
A speed paint for me. (anything less than a week, sketch to finish)(crappy photo)
Still have some shading and detailing to go on her but the BG goes pretty quick. Should have it done by midnight.
Critique or suggestions welcome.
There will be deep shadows and orange sunrise backlighting lighting with storm cloud BG. This will be something new for me and a fun challenge.
Started out as just a pin-up but evolved into something a little more complex. outlined a short story to go with it. Why can't I ever do things the easy way?
A star-fighter pilot, she has been lost deep underground for months after a high velocity impact drives her ship kilometers into the alien planet...
She nears the surface just before sunrise, the sky is still dark, covered by heavily ladened clouds. She is fatigued, near delirious and basically climbing the ancient volcanic vent on auto pilot when a thunderclap brings her to herself. She realizes she is surrounded by a dim grey light unlike the bioluminescence that had been guiding her way for so long. She now feels the cooler, fresher air ,(There had almost always been a strong air current but it had been warm, damp, unpleasant.) Still not daring to hope she had reached the surface, for she had had her hopes dashed before, she pulls herself up to peer over the edge of the opening. Before her eyes could adjust to the light and distant focal length, the orange sun that had just now crept above the horizon, broke through a gap in the clouds....
Need to finish this by Monday morning so I can get it scanned. It will be in the AC art show.
This will go into scraps later.

She escaped from her craft with only a bag containing emergency survival gear and a few items she could grab before the ship exploded. Yes, she had space armor. Basically an armored pressure suit. It was not designed long term, high temperature, survival in sub terrain caverns and definitely not for climbing. It was quickly discarded but she had little on beneath besides what amounted to little more than underwear and sensor mesh on her arms and legs. She did grab a t-shirt and shorts but they did not last long. It was hot, humid and there was life, some quite hostile. Most life forms relied on bioluminescence in some way or other. She soon discovered said lifeforms and lost some of what little gear she had then. She had an energy pistol and she used it sparingly, but it was finely used up. She had a number of water bulbs from the ships recycling plant and she filled them with a bioluminescent fungi to provide light. It was also edible and it became her main food source.(She did have a scanner that was able to tell her such things.)
Hey, she's been underground for 7 months, she's lucky to have her life let alone gear. ;)
Thanks

Ah I gotcha. It kinda reminds me of the novel "Hatchet" about a kid that survives for MONTHS in the Canadian Wilderness before being rescued. Although I do imagine it will be quite awkward when she is finally rescued... unless she can get something together to take care of the modesty issues... although I imagine by this point she's probably so comfortable without clothes, that she barely notices anymore. Although I do wonder if she was written off as MIA presumed KIA? or was she eventually able to call for help and get back to her unit (or just back home period). Cause that would suck if she went through all of that just to be be completely abandoned.
My son read that series of books :)
She's military, naked's no issue.
KIA. Fleet knew where her ship impacted. No survivors are expected after planetary impact. Her ship was equipped with flash-stasis shielding. It was designed to allow a ship to survive intact, an impact with small asteroids Up to a few miles across and other smaller space debris. Or even other ships if their shielding is less powerful. It is also a safety device to prevent (to a point) catastrophic planetary damage from an impact by allowing the craft to penetrate well below the planets surface before the majority of energy is bled off. Basically the difference between detonating a high yield nuke on the surface vs. deep underground. Even if the pilot survives, they are so deep that recovery is impossible.
She survived because her ship broke through the roof of a massive underground cavern (taking much or the roof with it). The ship was partially buried and when the stasis shield shut down, the weight started crushing the hull. (thus her hasty exit) Miles below the surface, there are vast networks of caverns and tunnels that were formed as upper level magma activity died off.
Once she reached the surface and the storm cleared, she saw contrails. she still had a wrist com (built for hard use) that she never had to deplete. The question is, which sides ships are making the contrails. Another story? :)

Well, I know that in modern militaries, no one is ever just written off that easily. Unless multiple people say things like "I didn't see a chute", a downed pilot is listed as MIA, so, what ever faction she flew for, would likely have her listed as MIA, presumed KIA, even with the likely hood of survival being almost 0. After all, people do survive crashes that no one SHOULD have survived in. For example, an American Airlines 757 crashed into a mountain killing all but four people... experts later determined that all of the survivors were sitting in the one area of the plane where the chances of survival were above 0... and lived. (the plane got a terrain alarm, and tried to pull up to clear the mountain, but belly-flopped into the peak with the nose section coming to a rest a few hundred meters down on the other side of the mountain and the tail section pancaked at the peak).
Unfortunately, that idea of 'no one could survive that' has killed people as well... when Japan Airlines Flight 123 crashed outside of Tokyo in the mountains officials took their time getting to the crash site believing all 524 people were killed instantly... in fact... a couple dozen people survived the impact... but only 4 were left when officials reached the site the following morning...
So obviously... it is possible to beat the odds.... as this pilot proved.... hopefully it's a lesson her faction learns... but the 'badguys' aren't going to be able to get anything out of her... she's been out of the loop for seven months, and her side thinks she's dead so they can't use her for propaganda... maybe they'll offer her a job? Seeing as the group she flew for may have left her for dead... I'd think it'd be an interesting turn of events... I know I'd be pissed as hell if I was abandoned like that... and I'd certainly want payback regardless of the cost.

I was asked that same question yesterday. Here's a quote :)
"I'm still learning how to do this stuff myself. I try and do something new every picture and push myself further with each. As for a tutorial, I can do what I do, I am just unable to tell how I do it, it just happens.
I personally, have learned most of what I know from critiques and suggestions and almost nothing from tutorials. Trial and error. :) "
Patience is #1, followed by trying to do your absolute best (almost) every picture.
