Name of the Tea: Twining’s Irish Breakfast Tea
Type of tea: Black
Loose or bagged: Available loose or bagged; personally prefer loose. The loose version comes in a nice metal tin that’s pretty useful once empty, too.
Brand/maker: Twining’s
Where to get it: Available from various web sites and also pretty commonly found at major retailers in the US, the UK and continental Europe. I usually order the loose leaves off Amazon.
Cost: One tin of loose (3.5 oz) goes for not quite 9 USD on Amazon, less if you buy in bulk; a box of 20 bags goes for around 3-4 USD in retail. I use a heaped tea spoon of loose leaves for a big cup.
Description: Fairly finely cut loose leaves with a floral-intense smell; it makes for an extremely dark, concentrated and intense brew. For some reason, Twining’s rates this as being less strong than their English Breakfast blend, which is not true in my experience – much to the contrary.
Smell: Intense black tea aroma, but also has a very nice, subtle floral quality to it that is somewhat surprising to find in a tea of this strength.
Taste: This is the espresso of teas: Will knock your socks off and wake you right up. Lovely intense, yet subtle flavor. Not recommended after lunch for those sensitive to caffeine. I brew mine for 5-7 mins in the afternoon, which makes for a more mellow effect – 2-3 mins pack more of a punch in the morning though.
Suggested Sweetener: I use half to one third of a tea spoon of sugar for a big cup, though you may want to use more. Adding some milk is highly recommended.
Overall Summary: Great everyday breakfast and all-day blend that gives you a lot of bang for your buck. Recommended for people who like a strong black tea; if you’re more of a Darjeeling person, this probably isn’t the tea you want. There are better Irish Breakfast blends available from independent retailers, but they easily cost double to triple the price of this.
Final Score 1-10: 8. Solid everyday tea for those who like a strong blend. Unbeatable for quality at the price it’s sold for.
