Actually, when you drew this for Huzzah (what, in 1988 or something? 1992?), two bucks would seem like rather a lot. Here in Stardate 21017.9 3/4, or whenever it is today, two bucks doesn't seem like much to chew about. I suppose too, there has to be some way to ensure people bring back the books at all. We should be grateful for library fines, not to mention that books are otherwise without appreciable value. (If you ever tried to sell one to a used bookstore, you'll know what I mean.) If not for small cruelties like that, drug fiends would rob libraries, pay the nickel fine and sell all the books for crack cocaine. Republicans would reserve them only for prestigious universities that educate the rich. Professional atheletes would collect them for status symbols but never read them...
On occasion I've bought a book I read and found was a turkey or had nothing to say or was plain boring. (D.M. Thomas, say.) Had I my druthers I might just shelf them in the turkey wing of my extensive library, and forget about it. But a dollar is a dollar, if I can get it, and my 550 square feet of space is far from extensive. Of maybe 4,000 books I"ve owned in my life, I've probably sold or given away about half. Even so, I've a serious problem knowing what to do with the better half.
