If you squint you almost can't see the wire! Over the years I've drawn all kinds of tech and definitely a few spacecraft, but I've almost never drawn what would qualify as a classic UFO. So recently when Tom Clowder
Tom_Clowder was working on his "Tomorrows Girls" poster I got the urge to draw some. So here for your enjoyment are some of my takes on the flying pie pans!

Yeah when I was drawing one of them I from a 1950's pulp article I had the NASA website up on computer. and there was a photo of Saturn looking like a giant saucer on steroids. That gave me an idea for a UFO company "Saturn, different kind of saucer. A different kind of company."
Is it me, or does the one in the upper right look inda like Cosmos?

When I was a teen, I remember being fascinated by the subject of aliens and UFOs. Sadly, I doubt we've ever been visited by extraterrestrials, but I still find the reports and sketches and experiences 'recovered' under hypnosis to be fascinating.
In any case, this inspires me for the next theme tour for Move the the Music. : )

Oh you mean the old Gerry Anderson show with the mix of live action and models? I loved that show. Even though now I find the declaration of "The future 1980" in the opening credits to be amusingly quaint. My favorite vehicles from that series were the Moon Interceptors. You can almost see the early design ideas that will go into the Space 1999 Eagles.
What found fascinating is that a couple times stated flat out that the interceptors are using nuclear warheads because in space short of a direct hit it is the only way to inflict damage on an object in a vacuum. Someone actually did some homework on it! Of it is terribly non-PC to talk about using nukes on most commerical TV which is probably why I also have enjoyed the new Battlestar Galaticia series to.
Did not know that Evangelion was heavily influenced by UFO though. Maybe if I'd watched more of it I'd seen the connection but just could not get interested that series. I know that makes me a pariah in some anime circles but the characters personalities just left me cold.

Correct about the Interceptors. Beautiful and well thought out.
And I agree about the Evangelion personalities. One of my close friends described it quite aptly as "Psychos of the world unite to save everyone". I watched through the entire thing, loathed the ending with a passion, loathed the movie ending even more. As for the parallels, Gendo = Straker, Fuyutsuki = Alan. There's a few more, but I have long since forgotten them.
Of trivia note: Fuyutsuki's briefcase is the same one that Straker uses, up to and including the "Destruct Zero" option. Again, there is supposed to be a lot more, but I have forgotten many.

Mika

By the way if you found Evangelion enjoyable you'd probably like Rahxephon. I described it once to Sci-fi lit fan once as "If Roger Zelazny wrote an anime series". Another description of it came from the person who introduced our group it " It is like Evangelion without the suck!".
Seen it, from beginning to end, and have the series. It indeed was quite good. Since we're on the subject of recommending sci-fi anime here, might I strongly suggest Crest Of The Stars? It is perhaps one of the better pieces out there. I also recommend hunting down the English-translated novels, as they are very informative and somewhat harder sci-fi than the series, mostly due to the mentioning of the details.

Well the whole reason for the disc/ saucer shape seems to have originated from several sources. The most important seems to have come from the first modern UFO report by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 who supposedly encountered a formation of 9 flat highly reflective objects while flying his aircraft in the vicinity of Mt. Rainer. Arnold described their motion by saying " they flew like saucer would if skipped across the water." He never described them as being saucer shape but all the sudden folks started seeing flying saucers.
the second source seems to be from rumored secret Nazi research into radical experimental aricraft shapes at the end of WWII. One these designs was for a circular wing aircraft. For the most part their research did not produce any meaningful data, but since the Nazis produced so many other incredible technological ideas it was speculated by some that the West, in particular the US. had gotten hold off one of these more advance designs and was conducting flight tests on it, and the UFO sightings which seem always happen in remote areas were the result of people witnessing these top secret flight tests. Finally there were those who thought that some of the Nazi super-scientists and most fanatical party followers of Hitler's idealogy had escape the Allies clutches and had escaped from Germany to set up shop in either South America or Antarctica. Since there was sudden flurry sighting in South America to in 50's and 60's some thought these were Nazi test pilots testing out their saucer-like aircraft. All in all it gets rather twisted up on itself.

Well, mikakyubi beat me too it, I was also missing the diamond shaped UFO fro the series from the same name. I love the sound they make. I wish they would remake the series, even having Anderson direct it and all, let the BBC do it with the same guys that do Dr.Who and all and we will have a aswome show.
Most famouse quote "One unlocated UFO is one to many! Find it!" Commander Straker.

Go down and leftwards from the Adamski saucer to the one directly underneath the saucer with exhaust shooting out.
I remember it because as of my last reading it's been over fifty years since the McMinnville photo was taken and it's both (a) strikingly clear and detailed for a flyiing saucer photo, and (b) no one who's examined has been able to figure out how it was done.

Wow! A UFO photo that is actually clear and detailed. That is one thing I've always wondered about pictures of UFOs, especially with rise of auto-focus and light adjustment cameras and camera phones is why the shots always look so crappy. Now I want to go and try to Google that.
Well, it's "clear and detailed" by the usual standards of UFO photos. The original pics are somewhat grainy, but they do clearly show a vehicle of some sort with a superstructure. And from everything I've read, examination of the photos by experts in photography and SFX showed that the object was 20-30 feet long and too far away for it to be a thrown toy.
That doesn't mean it was the real thing, whatever that may mean, but if it's a hoax then it's an incredibly well done one.
