The auction is live, folks!
Myenia and I have posted the Cameo Auction for Red Lantern - Conviction! And this year it's a Ladder auction, with some crazy benefits ASIDE from the actual cameo itself. . . .
This is a rare opportunity to see a character of your choice published in the Red Lantern universe, and there’s a whole bunch of other cool opportunities too, because we’re making it a ladder auction! You may also be able to get a dedication and sketch or even full color portrait of your character printed in the published book, limited edition Red Lantern prints and tshirts, Red Lantern character concept art (but of your character!), or even a full commission from Rukis and Myenia!
This cameo is for one scene, (which will span SEVERAL pages!) where any one character of your choice will play a part in the comic as a supporting character, as one of two possible roles. (Check out the minimum bid amount for more info!)
There are some restrictions for the character. Firstly, you must own or have permission to use the character for this purpose! Secondly, due to the world in which the comic is set, there are a few limitations on what type of character cameos can be made. We doubt this will affect too many people, and we apologize if you had your heart set on your hybrid pink dragon bunny winning, but we’ve gotta keep canon.
- No unnatural fur colors (we’re not too strict on this, just. . . please keep away from the neon spectrum)
- No modern-day trinkets (I'm sorry if the glowstick is ESSENTIAL to your character. . . he can't have it in Shanivaar. We are, however up to creative old-timey alternatives)
- Red Lantern has no herbivorous or fantasy anthros. We won't bother listing them all, but basically, if you have to ask. . . you're one of 'em. All omnivorous and carnivorous species are available.
- If you have a scaly or dragon anthro of some variety, and you *really* have your heart set on the cameo, email Rukis at rukiscroax[at]hotmail.com to discuss before bidding.
So here’s the ladder!
$500 – You get a character of your choice in Red Lantern: Conviction! Two scenes are available for choice, though one of them is only appropriate for certain species, while the other is appropriate for any meeting the criteria above! Be elegant and debonair at an upscale party the Crimson Divine “caters” at, or be a heroic soldier at Luther’s side!
$1000 – Meet or exceed this number, and you’ll get a dedication in the back of all printed copies of Red Lantern:Conviction, complete with accompanying sketch portrait!
$2000 – Meet or exceed this number, and instead of a sketch portrait, get a full color portrait collab commission (from Rukis and Myenia, of course!) of your character, which will accompany your dedication in the back of all printed copies of Red Lantern:Conviction! I would THIS that because I think about the comment more as a motivational comment. ;)
Personally I was never being able to afford such a commission or just throw money over something I like, without thinking if that would really help me in the situation I am, but thats fine, someday I might have the opportunity to do it as long as I'm still trying. *cheer*

Correct! I was very much at a disadvantage growing up. But If I learned one thing from my experiences, it's you can depend on or blame others for your problems. If you're really willing to work hard and be resourceful you'll better your self! Simple as that. It's taken me years to get where I'm at today and I'm no one special. And if I can do it anyone can.
I've known a LOT of folk who have busted their tail only to have the rug pulled out from under them. The vast majority of folk I know and have witnessed getting ahead have done so through a series of deceits, from faking credentials to joining "$#!t rolling downhill" fudging-numbers-then-blaming-the-lower-workers-for-the-shortcoming. From behemoth corporations to ma-and-pa owned small businesses, I have yet to find an absence of deceit and hypocricy. On the flip side, I know a lot of folk who have put a lot of effort into trying to do the right thing, only to get left behind and dumped.
This mantra equating wealth with responsibility (and, conversely, poverty equating with irreponsibility) I've heard and seen over and over, and I have witnessed far too many examples contradicting both for either claim to be true.

That is my advice, as this is the way I've always picked up jobs. It's simple, just give applications and or a resume to every employer. In the past I gave out well over 100 at a time and always got calls back from at least 1/3rd afterwords. Give it a try, I assure you that you'll find a job doing something.
Yes, I am eventually getting there, but for now, I barely started college (which financial aid pays for me because my mom is the only one of my parents with a job, after my dad got fired from the company he served for 35 years in Mexico) and the job I just got is the min. salary. Sure, I met several and lot more poor people (living in México, a lot of people who had to substain families with the minimum wage which is less than 5 dollars an hour or around 150 dollars a month), I can say I was very blessed. Now that I am living in the U.S., I have the opportunity of getting more well payed jobs, but my family is still not that well, because there is also more expenses in this country. I am sure I will be able to suceed in the future, after I am done with education, but for now, and the debts my family has, is possibly unlikely to be able to afford paying this much for a drawing.
That's kinda a sweeping generalization, isn't it? Not everyone can or is successful in finding/keeping work. Not everyone can get a diploma/certificate in a chosen career. Not everyone lives in a state that has good opportunities, or a reliable means of getting help SEEKING employment. Not everyone even CAN work, be it due to either physical or mental disabilities. There are a LOT of variables and factors that come into play that you're REALLY not taking into proper consideration, here, and it comes off as looking kinda offensive. =/
You're speaking in too far a vague sentiment.
EVERYONE Can become skilled in a career.
EVERYONE Can become successful. All that matters is that they search for the proper skill, follow their dreams, and do what needs to be done.
You don't need a piece of paper to tell you what you can or can't do.
Colleges aren't the only way to learn your career, and by god, they're definitely not the best.
If you want to be offended, by all means feel free- I just reserve the right to say It's my opinion, and that's that.

Not everyone can do everything in their current circumstances. Does that mean they're ALWAYS going to not be able to do it? No, not necessarily. But some people TRULY are trapped in circumstances beyond their control that hold them bound from achieving financial freedom. People like you saying this sort of stuff, hwen those sorts of people are IN matters like that...? It's as offensive as telling a wheelchair-bound person "you could walk if you really wanted to!"
For all your good intentions that you might have, you're really getting under a lot of people's skin. =/

I'm only getting under yours. And for the only reason of the fact you think you're right, and refuse to budge from your position. So let me kindly suggest that you stop trying to prove you're right, when I'm making it clear I have no relevant interest in discussing the matter with you.
I can point out no fewer than 3 other people who are also extremely annoyed by the stance your taking, so don't pin it just on me (even tho I -am- among those you're affecting). And you have enough of a "relevant interest" to be all over this submission, so I don't know why you're trying to adopt the "I don't care" stance. It's not working. No one's convinced.
I have asked you to stop in order to remain polite, but you've also seemed to ignore the entire purpose of that statement.
So instead I am going to tell you that if they have a problem with it, they can come to me, I can tell them to stop being so butthurt over words, and I can also block them, as I have you just now.

That guy.
Funnily enough, I don't think he read the freaking thing at all, as it stated that reptilian/scalies are REALLY not what they were looking for in this.

At that pricing I would expect some game players to sneak in, but still - this isn't going to be a $50 commission. As for "that guy", Rukis did say to contact her about reptilian characters, so maybe he did. We'll find out if he wins I guess.
I find it... interesting... that there are people out there with that much disposable income.

Not that hard for someone who already has a stable, secure career. Not so easy for anyone trying to start their career when they have little to none actual job experience and every damn place requires you to have a college-or-equivalent degree, driver's license, a minimum of five years' worth of work experience and be less than 30 years of age... And that's just so you can mow the lawns on a soccer stadium! xD
Guess three times why I am NOT bidding on this piece, then =P I am also exaggerating a bit in my above post, but that's certainly how it feels like at times around here where I live.
On a student budget such as mine, I'll just settle for doing the equivalent of bargain bin hunting when it comes to furry arts and even then I do it only occasionally when a good deal pops up AND I have a few euros to spend.

Yeah, I suppose. But it's one thing to splurge on a nice new car that will last years and another to splurge on some furry artwork. Knowing Rukis' and Myenia's skill, it will be very nice artwork, but still. It's art. What I find interesting is that there seem to be three types of commissioners:
1. "I would love to but I have no money"
2. "Yeah, I'll bid $100"
3. and "$5000 and there's no stopping me".
Everyone draws 1 and 2, but why only some commissions and some artists #3? That werewolf piece by Goldenwolf years ago comes immediately to mind. Again, nothing against artists that can draw these prices, but it seems that after one or two of these, the artist never becomes affordable again.

The most succinct way of describing this is as follows-
"What will be, will be. We are not in a position to change anything, and as time progresses, we'll still get to see art regardless. So to complain about it when one is already far enough out of the loop is like asking why people buy Ferrari's when they should be paying their mortgage."
We cannot change people unless they wish it.
So in this case, we merely sit back and enjoy the show.

I understand your frustration, I really do. However, the simple answer is "some people just have a helluva lot of money". Some people are overpaid, some people have too low a cost of living, some people busted their ass to get that money, and some people were born into it. Furry fandom used to be a small, eclectic family of folks who were really into anthropomorphics, but it's grown into a mainstream genre now. Which means mainstream people have gotten into it - doctors, lawyers, CEOs, trust fund babies, even Hollywood actors. Prices for furry items across the board have been rising because more affluent people have been joining the fandom and it's been mainstreaming and commercializing. Even Mini (the car company) has been targeting furries lately by name in their advertisements! Yes that marginalizes us old-timers and die-hard fen for whom this used to be an affordable hobby to partake in, but it's the way of the world. Nothing cool stays small for long.
BTW - The Goldenwolf piece was not a random bid-war or coincidence - it was Lance Rund's annual art school endowment. He decided to award his scholarship that year to Goldenwolf because she had no formal schooling and it was supposed to be used towards an art degree. She instead used it to start a company with another (non-furry) artist and broke Lance Rund's covenant, which ultimately caused Lance to stop offering the scholarship at all.

Sadly, I think you're right about the mainstreaming. It's good if it eliminates the "fringe" tag furries used to have. It's bad as it does elevate pricing for everyone. But I always hoped that was offset by new artists coming into the fandom and being reasonable until they were discovered. It is a real shame when some of them get discovered and then essentially price themselves out of the fandom again.
Interesting side note on the Goldenwolf commission. My bad - I just assumed it was either a bidding war or a proxy. All that takes is one aggressive proxy setting and one or two unreasonable people to make something take off. I wonder how often these high-dollar commissions stiff the artist...

I can only speak for FurBuy because I own/operate that system, but all of the high-price auctions that have closed on our site we've followed-up with and confirmed. Nobody's ever gotten stiffed on the really high price tag items - probably because we explicitly make the bids legal and binding contracts and we will back that up with support of legal action. We also do a lot more validation and follow-up investigations into users placing bids in that price range and we're quick to confirm high bids privately. It's one thing to troll someone out of $50 or even $150 - because there's little risk or threat of legal reprisal that would cost more than the money that was reneged on, but once you get over $500 the game starts to change and you're entering into the domain of higher courts and higher charges for breach of contract.
You're implying that artists pricing themselves at the market willing to pay for their work are not being reasonable once they're "discovered." (Though, artists in this fandom are not really "discovered"). The fandom still has a huge percentage of artists who price low to be able to pick up work, and there will always be those people.
Also, it must be considered that this isn't just an auction for a commission that comes by anytime...its a rare and limited opportunity, tieing the person to the comic, which has a very large audience and gets published. Fans often like to support comics they enjoy, but to be a part of it, in every copy that gets sold, as well as getting commission(s) (depending on final bid amount) that are otherwise entirely unobtainable (neither Rukis nor I have accepted color commissions in over a year, nor have we ever offered collab commissions) is something that entices people. I wouldn't assume that it is "disposable" income...especially since most people know we offer this spot once per book...bidders could have been saving since the last one!

Delays on the posting system make it look like my other post was in reply to yours... it wasn't, but this one was.
No, I'm not blaming the artist. They are just responding to what the market decides their art is worth. I'm not saying that the artists should refuse money or drop prices - I am more surprised (maybe not even "disappointed") that the prices go so high so quickly. And you could be right in that it's some real fans that have been saving up for the opportunity. Again, I have no problem with that - my original post was just a feeler to see who has that much money to spend on a furry commission.

The bidding is currently at $5075.00 what makes you think that the high bidder isn't a "real" fan of this comic? Me personally I'm really happy to see that the bidding went that high that quickly. Red Lantern is a fantastic comic and I would love to see Rukis and Myenia be rewarded for their efforts with piles of money. People like the high bidder are ensure that the rest of us, who perhaps don't have a lot of money, can enjoy this comic for free. I hope this auction works out for them, and if they do it again I hope they raise even MORE money.
Like I said, I have nothing against the artists about the price. At >$5000 for, let's be honest, a couple pages of furry art - I would HOPE the bidder is a big fan. My comments were all about surprise at how high the price is. Now I'm not saying Rukis/Myenia are bad by any stretch of the imagination, but there are a lot of good artists that say they are struggling to get $40 commissions. It is the disparity that had me curious.
I really don't care if someone wants to spend a couple mortgage payments on a few pages of furry art. I am just surprised that there are people out there who would. Not trying to add to (or restart) the drama here, FYI.

Exactly what I think
I think it´s some kind of line the artist steps over. It´s like "20$?! thats much!" Till the artist reaches a goal of some people who buy a few very expensive things and then all people think, maaan that artist is famous, I will pay any price. Such depressing to artists with similar skill but prices around 10-100$ for full works who maybe start thinking bad of their own skill.

No, it is abysmally low. I've seen it firsthand, even held an 'executive' level position myself and have been the significant other of a master of the rat race whom went from impoverished to high 6-figure income with real estate holdings over a million (last I checked; I'm sure he's even farther ahead by now) by learning to play the game -- he faked credentials and stepped on a lot of folk to get himself ahead, and cut such corners as bypassing his electric meter to steal power (ironic given he wound up working for Enron). I've seen this over and over, and of course every last one would deny it (even though he actually bragged about the things he'd done to get jobs). If I were a better liar, and more comfortable with it, I'd be doing just as well as he. Honest folk don't last long, every company I've been with has discarded 'squeaky wheels.'
Well all I'll say is that your experience has been vastly different from mine and from almost everyone I know. I've heard horror stories of having to interact with management on rare occasions, but the few rats who move up quickly and then prevent movement up aren't so pervasive to outweigh the many people who legitimately work their way up (or outweigh the rats who get caught). Admittedly, the vast majority of my friends and extended family have gone into STEM fields and STEM-related jobs, so that may be why success has followed work rather often, but even the people I know who've been in/gone into teaching, music, and graphic design have all been living comfortably enough to splurge when they want to - which, smartly, isn't often. Financial responsibility is HUGE. My parents were able to put 50% up front when buying a new house several years ago - before the crash, so not cheap - and I've learned from my grandfather and father well enough that even if I was kicked out of school tomorrow and lost my stipend I would be set for well over a year thanks to having doubled the amount I have in the bank over the past year.
Equating a person's financial standing with personal responsibility is false and condemnative, and there is really no meaningful difference between condemning a person for being poor and calling it their fault than religious zealots blaming victims of disasters for not having the right religion (or right religious sect), such as many did to New Orleans residents. There has been fudging of numbers everywhere I've gone, and anyone bringing issues to light sooner or later gets the ire of someone higher up.
I've made multi-thousand-dollar loans to friends who earn several times my income with how frugal I've been. I enjoy being able to live on the cheap, $400/month hook-up when I lived in an RV I owned -- that's "rent" and "utilities" combined for my own private space, while the going rate for rent around here is around $1,000 per month. I've had several bosses who enjoy my attention to detail and reporting of quality and safety problems as I find them ... but sooner or later I always run into a 'boss of a boss' who detests such because they have bonuses they get when problems are buried. My current employer (as a temp, through an agency) fires workers for not having a certain carton processing rate -- but it is completely blind to the on-the-floor reality that some cartons take over an hour per carton to process, but their meter seems set on being able to complete two cartons per minute (which can only be accomplished through 'express checking' which their rules forbid on certain cartons). They've fired every checker several times since I started ... they trained me to check two weeks ago, now they're getting set to fire me and all the other current checkers. I've seen very similar in employer after employer ... it either takes a lot of luck for an honest worker to get ahead, or a worker willing to cheat (perhaps by finding other ways to get rid of or hiding cartons that need to be worked which are time-intensive). I've worked in I.T., quality control, manufacturing and warehousing, even agriculture and service jobs ... every single one was far removed from honest pay for honest work.
To add insult to injury, the persons who get higher up do blind themselves to these mis-deeds. The warehouse I am in, everyone started as a temp and worked themselves up ... I don't think the floor managers are willfully evil, but they've deluded themselves and always blame the workers when numbers aren't adding up. By their count, if a worker is taking an hour to work a carton that takes anyone else an hour to do, they are lazy and unproductive and need to be gotten rid of ... they will go through this over and over, firing every new batch of workers until they get a group in at a point where there aren't any "debut" or problem-supplier cartons and everything can be express-checked (which is, in reality, a matter of luck and has nothing to do with how hard the workers are working). Similarly, my last job (which I worked for 5 years until they got rid of me, telling me I wasn't allowed to work while telling the employment security department I was still an 'active employee' to prevent my receiving unemployment) for a retail grocery vendor/supplier gave bonuses to the sales folk for low "stales" (products the company I worked for, which supplied grocery retailers with a certain line of products, which had expired their shelf life on the shelf and the company was contractually obliged to buy back from the retail stores, giving them a full refund) and so they'd find a dark corner to stash those stales so they wouldn't have to buy them back. I called this in on several stores, as well as poor shelf stock rotation -- product was going bad on the shelves because instead of rotating stock, for maximum speed the sales reps (who deliver product to the stores and earn a commission on it, plus a bonus for low 'stales') would simply throw fresh product on top of old (when they are supposed to put the fresh product in the back, so the older stuff with a nearer 'sell by' date will get sold first), which led to a lot of product going stale. I called this in several times ... with one boss, this worked well; I repaired our company's reputation which had (pardon the pun) gone sour with several grocery retail clients due to poor service by taking the time to properly rotate the stock the sales rep (I was a 'merchandiser' or 'detailer,' essentially a weekend complement to the weekday-only sales reps; I did not deliver product and did not earn a commission, only an hourly wage and I worked what stock the sales rep had left in the backstock area). In fact, I scored /bonus/ sales for my employer simply by doing my job -- a very busy grocery retailer was fed up with a rival vendor's lack of service, leaving understocked racks near the front that quickly sold out with no replacement stock and the store manager asked me to stick something in there, which I did and it sold quickly. I also called in safety problems with our stock carts in the back, some sales reps way over-stocked them; stock on the carts was not supposed to exceed a certain height which teh sales rep ignored and, in fact, I had to get a ladder to try to get to some of the stock and much of it, due to being stacked too tall, was simply unsafe to work. I was made to report to a different boss than the one who had been responsive to my reports of poor rep service with our clients, one who griped about our customers and seemed more of a bonus gamer (the sort who preferred stales get buried) ... when I developed a wrist problem and the doctor said I might need a wrist brace from time to time (its not a condition that can ever be fully cured, even with surgery), he declared I was phyiscally unfit and refused to allow me to return to work (and, as mentioned previously, told the employment security department I was still an active employee so I wouldn't be able to get unemployment).
I have many more stories like these, from computer technical support call centers which rewarded and promoted techs for slamming customers off the phone and punished and fired techs who stayed on the line to actually resolve the customer's issues, to agricultural quality control and processing work which involved a lot of number fudging, to lawn service. Honest work got one punished in each of these, the only way to get ahead in any of them was to go along with number-fudging, sweeping problems under the rug or finding other cheats to help numbers look good (when they weren't). This is how most people get ahead, and none of those folk will ever see any wrongness in it, and equating a person's financial standing with personal responsibility only further exacerbates this.
I've been at this a good long while, almost 2 decades since "becoming an adult." Whenever I've tried going along with the number fudgers, I've always been caught holding the bag; whenever I've tried to do the right thing and report problems, I'm (sooner or later) gotten rid of. I've seen the same happen to lots of other folks, and I've seen the sleight of hand taken by those who do get promoted. Its been my experience to assert this is how most folk who get ahead have gotten ahead. Every one? No, certainly. So far as I've seen, Rukis has found a far more legitimate way to get ahead plying her art trade. I don't know her that well, of course, but if my observations from a distance are true, she's rare in having gotten ahead honestly. By and large, though, from my broad experience, that's an exception to the rule.
You say that, but I beg to differ.
If you do the research, put in the time and effort to find out what you want to do, and find your target audience?
You can become a fortune 500 company in little to no time. The thing you don't seem to take into account in this is the fact that about 82% of fortune 500 companies are owned by immigrants, or the children of immigrants.
You might want to know why this is? It's simple- They didn't set out to do something they enjoyed, they set out to find what was needed, and bust their ass to make it a successful business that THEY owned, not the other way around. People are so afraid of failure, and of doing a job that they don't like that they've ultimately decided to play it safe. And that kind of lifelong pursuit ends with what we have these days.

I love your work, I feel an artist should charge what they feel their work deserves...but these auctions are really insane.
For only six thousand dollars do you get your character drawn as a supporting character on a few pages and tee-shirts! WHOA! WHAT A DEAL!
Seriously, love your work, but this is ass-backwards retarded. For that much you should at least cover the expenses of said winner to fly with you to a few cons...and cover room and all other expenses. Actually reward the stupid person who spent so much money with something of value.

That's the point I was trying to make. I don't doubt it will be good art, but it's just art. And a few pages of it. I don't blame Rukis for getting it if she can, it's just disappointing to see people price this stuff into oblivion so quickly. Well, there is always one in every crowd I guess.
More power to her if she can con some idiot into giving up that much money on something he'll stuff away in a closet somewhere and forget about it in a year's time, but there should be some line of artistic responsibility...whereas I'm scraping every dime and penny I can to keep a roof over my head and feed my horse. I offer cheap-ass commissions, but just getting the few I've gotten thus far has been like pulling teeth. I'm actually kind of nervous if I'm gonna have enough money this month to cover everything, and I might need a vet called out too...I don't have the money for that.

Actually, the reason you can't pull in better prices for your artwork is because it isn't high-quality artwork. Sorry to be so blunt, but someone spewing as much jealous rhetoric laced with profanity as you have been needs a hard dose of reality. I took a look at your page. Improve your artwork until it is at a professional level, and then you might be able to make a living at it.
Also, horses are an incredibly expensive animal to own. If you care about horses enough, you'd have educated yourself on their upkeep enough to realize that before you got the animal, or you would have given it up to a shelter or farm that was better equipped financially to handle the animal when it became clear you couldn't do so. But any layperson knows horses are expensive, even without education, so I have to assume that you knew that at the outset as well. Don't keep an animal you can't afford to take care of. The animal is the one that suffers for your financial miscalculations in the end.
I also think it's worth noting, while we're on the subject, that the winner of this auction ends up with a dedication page in a comic that has an audience of thousands, possibly tens of thousands. Usually that's a spot reserved for family or loved ones of the artist. Just because that's not valuable to you doesn't mean it's not valuable to someone else. Say, a really big fan of the comic, who wants their name attached to it, and wants to know they supported the artists while they were working on it. This comic is put out almost entirely for free, after all. Don't judge someone just because they've prioritized something in their life, which they can clearly afford, that you wouldn't have prioritized.
And work on your art. Some day, you might be skilled enough to draw in this kind of income, too.

One, never said I was a great artist, I'm cheap because I'm not high-end quality. Jealous that someone is making a shit-ton of cash for this, yeah, who wouldn't be? Everyone is hurting for cash, but would I accept such large amounts from someone, even if my art was up to par? Nope. I have trouble with folks paying me back money they owe me when I know they're in a pickle themselves with cash.
Secondly, I have been around horses for a very long time, I was raised amongst them, I know all about cost and such. I would do everything in my power to aid my horse, even if that meant selling her if she needed medical treatment I couldn't afford. Have you ever heard of a rich farmer? Neither have I. Expenses come out of everywhere and no-where at once so fucking quick you can hardly keep your head from spinning. I'd rather starve before letting her starve, so I'm doing everything in my power to keep us ahead of the curve...but as I said, expenses come out from everywhere. But thank you for telling me horses are expensive.
And be as blunt as you want about my art, taking long breaks while being deployed certainly doesn't help my quality improve at all.

what you forget is these two artists have decided to make art their career. One cannot subsist on $40 commissions here and there and then a boon of a few thousand dollars every 4 months when the big cons roll around. Auctions like these fill in the gaps between our paydays. Auctions like these pay the mortgage. Auctions like these cover medical expenses in the future because single payer health/dental/vision insurance isn't a thing in the USA. So no, the winner shouldn't be paraded around and these lovely ladies shouldn't shower the winner in $6000+ worth of products, prints, art. The winner is paying for the experience. Experiences cost money and you won't get the same amount back. People go up in acrobatic planes to do stunts with professionals and all they get is a video for that experience, which isn't equivalent to the cost of the experience.
So, food for thought when and if you decide to make art a career, pay sales and federal taxes on your artistic earnings, and take the time to even see if your art is turning a profit while supporting the type of family you choose to create. If you are taking yourself as an artist seriously you will find yourself exceeding standards and commanding the prices you need to subsist throughout the year and between conventions.

It's not retarded, it's like all art - it's ultimately worth what some buyer decides it's worth. I admit that anything over $1k seems like too much to me, but it's not like that's uncommon in the art world in general. There's nothing that say that furry art must be worth less than 'legitimate' art. It's just gone as any auction will go, the prize is worth whatever the bidders say it's worth.
I agree, I have nothing but praise for them. They've worked REALLY hard for years to become this successful and now they're making a living doing something they love! That's amazing and deserves respect in my opinion. Besides, it's not like they're taking advantage of anyone; the benefits were very clearly stated and clients know exactly what they're bidding for.
Exactly! I'm trying my hardest to make a living doing what I love, as well, and I have nothing but praise that Rukis has made it this far and is making a living doing it. The people complaining about the prices seriously just.. Are sorta discouraging, I guess! No one's holding anyone at gunpoint to bid or anything! :/
Since I'm probably one who will get tagged as "complaining" I will respond. Don't take the pricing as discouraging. As a (potential) commissioner - I am the one who is discouraged with sky-high pricing.
I have no problem paying a fair price for art, that's not what I think people are arguing. I'm not even arguing that - I'm just surprised at how so many artists get nearly nothing for their work and then once and a while something will totally take off.

It depends. When you're a popular artist, you're also selling a brand - literally, your name is a brand. And not only can your art be absolutely spectacular, but everyone also wants a piece of the brand name. So, supply and demand kicks in, and because of how infrequently (I believe,) Rukis actually offers commissions/auctions, it's gonna roll into the high numbers extremely quickly. You also must understand - this is her full time job.
It just discourages me, as an artist, because I try - I try really, really hard to be as affordable as I can without losing money, because art is a full time job for me - but then it gets discouraging when people start flinging around a lot of vulgar animosity, not only at the artist herself, but the fact that someone has enough income can bid so high, and also support fandom artists.
Also please don't think I was referring to you - I honestly meant some of the more vulgar comments displayed here, and from what I've seen you've been nothing but tactful!

Wow your art is spectacular! I would love to see you draw my devil characters! Instant watch <3
Also I agree with you, I wasn't referring to any specific person either; art is a full-time job for me as well and with my limited availability (I recently moved out of my own place and got an apartment with my mom because she has a heart condition and needs help with money and my sisters) and not sky-high prices, I'm usually pretty much just barely scraping by with hardly anything leftover to go toward my debts and certainly nothing extra. That's why I am inspired by artists like Rukis. Phenomenal work, and a great living.
I also agree with you 100% about the brand thing. "Look, I have art from [artist]!" it feels good to be able to have your own special commission from a highly loved artist. When I could afford commissions I used to commission unpopular artists, but the artwork I have from artists like Akreon and AMSBT (DeviantART) are pretty dear to me.
But yes, tl;dr in short I agree with you, I think your artwork is fantastic, and based on the way you respond you seem like a really polite, considerate person.

Oh goodness! Well thank you so much for that, that means a lot to me! ;w; We could do an art trade sometime, perhaps!
I still live with my family, and don't see moving out in my future, really - but it's not something I can really help? Without my financial support my family would pretty much collapse in on itself, considering the only incomes we receive are from my mother's freelance business and my own freelance business of being a commission artist. So it gets really tough and it's pretty much impossible to save up any kind of money. :/ Which is why I hope to eventually make enough to live on comfortably with my art.
and yes, definitely! I used to commission art sometimes and I love each and every piece I've ever received - from scribbly fanart doodles to a portrait painting I commissioned for myself and my partner, but the portrait is especially dear to me, because it was done by a "brand name". (Not necessarily in the furry fandom, but she's a pretty popular monster artist.)
Aaaaa also thank you again! ;w; I try to be very nice and considerate, and have learned to temper down my knee-jerk responses from (countless) unintentional confrontations.
Also, gonna go ahead and +watch you back! c:

Wow I'm totally in the same boat! My mom has medical problems and works in daycare but can only work a limited amount of hours per week, and also needs my help with my youngest sisters. Without my commissions she wouldn't be able to support food, clothes, or even just the rent by herself. That's my dream too someday, to be a good enough artist to give my family a comfortable life. I can't see myself doing anything else.
An art trade would be amazing! :D We totally should, whenever you want! I love AT's <333
And thanks for the watch ;v;!

Thanks for the kind words.
You might be right about the brand, but like with everything "popular" it does tend to get out of hand rather quickly. As a commissioner/watcher I don't like it for two reasons. First, because it means there is no chance for a reasonable person (price) to commission one of these artists. Second, in the past (not referring to Rukis) I've seen the artist let it go to their head and then they pretty much disconnect from the fandom. If you've been around a while, you'll know the ones I mean. And that's sad as it removes good talent from a small pool to begin with.
If anyone has animosity, I don't think it's with people who can fling around $100 commissions - it with the people who can fling around $5000 commissions. I mean I know everyone has disposable income, but some things just seem a little over the top. Like outliers in an otherwise reasonable range of prices.

You're welcome - and yes, sadly, I do have to agree with that. As someone who (used to) be a commissioner but is also a fulltime artist I can see it from both perspectives, and really I feel for people when they're upset because they can't afford X's prices/can't participate in bidding or anything. I've also seen people let it go to their heads, yeah, and that's another thing that can get really discouraging as a fan/commissioner.
And that's understandable too! I mean, for all we know the highest bidder has saved up for a long time to be able to afford it, or perhaps they're cutting into savings they've had built up for a number of years - it really depends! But in the end it's not really anyone's business, you know? I say kudos to the higher bidder(s) for supporting a great fandom artist, but again, everyone is entitled to their opinions on the subject! I'm just not a fan of being super vulgar about it.

Just something caught my eye here....
You shouldn't assume that artists disconnect from the fandom because it gets to their head. Sometimes a good artist disconnects from the fandom because they get better business elsewhere. When its your job, you go where the work is, and unfortunately in the fandom, people are not always the most professional folks to work with, don't have an interest or ability to pay the rates, or are looking for something specific an artist doesn't have an interest in doing. For example, a big turn-off for me in the fandom is that individual characters sell. Switch to another fandom, and you can make more money doing your own stuff. Its not always, or even usually, a "to their head" thing.
Just FYI.

Oh, I know. I've seen people leave for a variety of reasons. Many of the older artists would leave because they became "real" artists, and were afraid their furry work would be connected to them IRL. And that had a very negative impact on their day job.
So I'm not saying that it happens all the time, or even often, but it does happen. And it is a shame when it does. That's all I meant.

She can charge what she wants or how much she feels her work is worth...I just feel who ever pays that much is a fucking idiot, and should never be in charge of such amounts of money if they're going to spend it in such fashion.
Secondly, as an artist, personally I would never feel right taking that much from someone, especially if I felt they were getting the short end of the stick in the deal. Artistic responsibility, I guess you would call it.

Again, no knock on Rukis, but I did come this close to paying Larry Elmore about the going amount for a piece (I lost out at the end). However, for that I was going go get something I would have no problem selling in the future and getting most (or more) of my money back. Unless the winner gets royalties on the use of their character, they probably aren't going to be able to recover that money, you know?
I mean.. If someone has the disposable income, or perhaps they have saved for a long time for such an opportunity to roll around, then kudos to them. They're not exactly hurting anyone? But you're completely entitled to feel the way that you do about it, I'm not saying you can't feel that way or anything!
I am sorry to seem rude, I keep forgetting I'm not surrounded by other military service, so throwing profanity about doesn't aid in my opinion. And that's all it is, 'my opinion', folks can take it or leave it, it's up to them. But I am sorry if it felt as though I were attacking you.

HOLY COW. Congratulations on all of your success, guys! $3225.00 would pay off my car and pay two months of my rent! :p
I've only been at the commission business for about 2 years and I aspire to be as successful and talented as the two of you! It's my dream to have a career as an artist without struggling some day.

If I was this talented, popular, and intelligent.. I wouldn't have to work a day in my life! Congrats Rukis! I would settle for being connected, and have freinds that would do stuff for me for free, just cuz I'm a cool friend.. which I try to be.. oh well ^^ the aspirations of a untalented admirer. Btw, I'm not trying to sound like a mooch or anything..
hnnng I feel it necessary to remind you that every day IS work for rukis, she's made it painfully clear that she barely makes enough to have a stable living situation, even with all her skill and renown. I'm really glad for her to be able to have a spurt of income like this now and then, I know she'll put it to use on things that need the money badly.
It just bothers me that people don't consider art to be work =\ especially when it's someone of higher skill.

You can get a new car for $5k?
I suppose Canada might get chinese imports more readily than the US, but that's still pretty darn cheap.
<- someone who wishes there were a little cheap commuter car with such nice options like "carpet" "passenger seat" "rear brakes" and "FM radio". I'm sure there could be a $5k car if only automakers would make everything an option.
I suppose I got a little off track there. Eh, someone might get some entertainment out of it.

The guy up there commenting to people and telling them they should just magically better themselves with their finances, /it's not always possible despite a persons best budgeting skills/. People have every right to envious and hopeful, as long as it doesn't come down to insulting and harmful commentary. it's not a magic button that people can press and suddenly have a more stable income and be able to save everything. It makes me sad to see that kind of prejudiced commentary going rampant on here =S
On topic; Damn, I'm always shocked to see bidding for anything go that high (charity auction piece one year at a con was 3000), simply because how does someone make such decisions on the spot like that XD to decide to spend any amount over $1000 on something usually requires serious thought around here, despite having more than that saved up. even WITH half a downpayment saved up, we couldn't just spend a huge chunk like that XD always amazes me to see people that can. Kudos to them, supporting the fandom's artists ^^

Thank you for being reasonable and understanding. Thank you. It makes me really happy to see someone able to understand that not only is it sometimes literally impossible to better ones self financially, but also that it's okay to be envious of those who can afford art like this - just don't be a hurtful buttface about it! :/
Man, I'm always envious of people who can afford commissions, I've had like all of... 5 commissions over the past couple year that I've bought, they've all been under $50 lol. mostly $10 or $15. But hey, there will be a day. til then, *shrug* kudos to others who can perpetuate the trade :) At least I get to see awesome artwork out of it.
I think you misunderstand what some of the others up above had said. You are exactly right, it's not a magical button that can be pressed that will instantly better anybody's situation. What will better somebody's financial situation though is to start making decisions and taking actions today that will come together in the future. I know, it's hard to look that far out and sacrifice things today for a better tomorrow, but it's really the only way. When I say "future" I'm not talking about saving for retirement or something, there are actions people can take today that would have a good chance of putting them in a much better financial situation in 5 years. Trust me, I know from experience.
And then there are some people who have absolutely no control over what happens right now, with restrictions due to some kind of financial assistance, for example. A lot of student loans won't give you money if you earn more than something like 10 hours a week of income, as a specific example.
There are lots of people who just plain and simple do not have the control yet. When they do, by all means the logic of budgeting and planning should be put in, I was more bothered that the person was going around and essentially insulting people by saying "just do better!".

Fucking THANK you. That whole comment thread was cheesin' me off something fierce. =/ I've been unemployed (with a few scattered failed job positions that only lasted a few weeks to a month, at best) for a little over 3 years now. The only income I make for myself is when I get the occasional freelance project, or commission work in the fandom (which is exceedingly rare). I've exhausted every possible resource for getting REAL employment, so I'm literally supported solely by my family and my fiance until my situation improves. It's a horrible, powerless situation to be in, to be forced to rely on others, and VERY few people want to be in that kind of position, being such a burden to the people you care about.
To make it sound like "we're not trying hard enough", as if it's just a matter of sheer force of will? As if to say that if we wanted it badly enough, we wouldn't be in this situation...? That pisses me off to no end. FUCK those people. >=/

Biggest part of getting a job is that there are also tons of other people just like you that have applied, and one just happened to catch the employers eye better, or something. Sure, there are jobs out there. There are also a ton of other candidates out there =\
I hear ya on all fronts. I've been to college, got several relevant certifications, and still no luck with applying for everything that pops up relevant to my field. ;_; I either don't have enough experience, or someone more experienced has applied too. ;_;

EXACTLY.
I'm currently enrolled in a vocational school to try and get certified for both 3D Animation and Commercial Arts (thank god for sponsorships and financial aid >_<;;), all while trying to help make money in my day-to-day ... and it's DAMN hard. Discouraging, frustrating, and HARD. Do I doubt that I'll ever get to where I wanna be in life? Absolutely not. But can I make that happen right NOW, if i "really-really wanted", according to these other people? No. Current circumstances don't make that possible. BUT ... said circumstances won't last forever.

A younger character would certainly be under scrutiny for the cameo, but neither of the cameos we're offering involve 18+ content. That being said. . . a child character wouldn't fit either of the roles, no :P We'd have to do an adult version of said character for the winner, to make it canon.
a few weeks away! this auction was timed with my move, and Myenia's move, in order to help us handle the expenses. Financial planning at its' scariest! Auctions are so random, you never really know how they're going to turn out. But I'm blown away by this one. Really gonna help make a dent in the moving/rent costs!
Why is it every time anyone posts something like this I always see so many comments singing the same old song and dance? Per example "I wish I had that kind of money" or "that more than I make in a year". Simple truth is if you really want something bad enough you'll save your money, get a part-time job, or wait till your older, more financially stable.
I think much of the confusion comes from the fact that furry used to be a "hobby fandom" and you could always get artwork for very cheap. Now it's become more mainstream, the quality has improved VASTLY and the prices along with it. But furry has also brought-in more mainstream people who are more affluent and make more money, too. The average furry fan is typically in the 18-24 age bracket, and who made much money at that stage in their life? Hence a lot of the complaining. We're also an internet-based subculture, which means we have people from all geographic and sociopolitical spectra (and income brackets with varying costs of living), so while a person from Kansas might see a $3,000 piece of art as an incredible luxury, someone from NYC or Tokyo sees it as an affordable thing to put on their wall.
All I have to say is that I am REALLY happy that someone that's worked as hard to get good at your craft as you and Myenia have are able to make an actual living at it. I think there are a lot of people who don't understand the time that goes into these kinds of things and how much you have to charge in order to not just make minimum wage (because who wants that) but make an actual living. So, bravo! And thanks for sharing as much as you do on your FA site for free!
.... wow.... I was thinking of throwing a bid in, but, no job, I go in and it's at 5000 already. HOW?
I don't even have that much money. That's crazy insane, but, wow. Just, wow.
Rukis, you got yourself a great wonderful little job there, I'm seriously impressed. All I can think, just, wow. Wow. I'm very impressed. Great job. =^.^=

Damn...I don't even have five bucks, let alone five grand...I guess I'm just going to have to spend, like...100 times less than that learning how to draw so I can make my handsome Ian Kyte a reality! :p...But no, seriously, glad to see this happening and I hope everything goes well, and grats to whomever wins this!...I need to learn more about this world so that I can write some fanfiction for it. Ian would make for a good privateer in this world :P
Rukis is going to come to FE again next year i we have to stuff her in a honda and gokart her up here.. Just so folks can point and go *wow she was the GoH last year and now look at her prices.. and i got a sketch from her for 40 bucks! ;)*
Im killing myself in amusement seeing how the prices have gone up for someone who was kind of shy and unsure of herself and now has this star power.. makes me feel bloody happy seeing the nice furs for a change getting a few bucks they richly deserve. Read some of her journals to see how fate has been tossing bricks at her.
Although if you are sweet Rukis you can toss a polarbear in your comic..big sweet silly and laying on the floor as a rug for all I care *grin* I am just tickled pink this is happening to you after we had you as GoH. Shows I actually do have a brain in my head for going* say that would make a good GoH choice*..
Now i shall giggle happily all week.. thank you Rukis and the fandom for showing we DO recognize talent.. *bear hugs for all*
Gaia bless to whomever wins and to Rukis

my sketches are still about that :P This auction's for a lot more than a sketch.
I don't think I'll be able to make it next year, actually. I'm moving in a few months, and it's going to be a tumultuous year for me. I'm not going to many cons at all, while I get settled.

Oh i know but one can hope..besides it was wonderful having you as is and gratifying to see you coming this far this fast from that shy lady a few years ago when you did those sketches for Blindsight and Shane to this level of goodness now.
We still have to commission you again sometime later of course, and hope you have a great move too.

I have to agree - It's really amazing to see how far you've come, Rukis! I still remember you from a couple years ago... selling your first comic 'Unconditional' and me being rather upset when you switched to Red Lantern instead of continuing that 'practice' comic. But now I'm a fan of both and delighted to see you become a real star in the furry scene. You deserve every bit of limelight you get! Keep up the great work!
After reading though the wealth of petty comments above I'm left with on conclusion. This place is full of underachieving and extremely jealous adult-children. I honestly believe I've seen just about all of it here, from artists (or at least some who claim to be yet their art is right on par with what I could do) to the self-entitlement individuals who blame society for all their problems and think the world owes them something. The fact is simple here, if you can't afford something get over it! I'd personally love to have a $300,000 sports car but I'm not about to go to a dealer and bitch and moan about how life is so unfair and it should not cost that much because it's just metal and plastic after all. The truth is you assholes are getting lots of good shit for free here! Rukis posts all kinds of eye-candy for anyone who cares to look to enjoy. But do remember, this is her job! And I know of no one that's willing to put long hours into something everyday of the week and never get a penny from it. So if her and Myenia can make some money off of something that's going to take them a lot of time to make. I see no issues with it!
While I agree with a lot of what you're saying, your tone is really ... caustic, to put it mildly. Might wanna work on that. You're never gonna win anyone over by yelling at them. People are just going to think you either have anger issues or are crazy, and completely ignore whatever point is is you're trying to make (even if it IS a valid point). Jus' sayin', 'cuz you've ran afoul of this issue before. =/
Money is just a number followed by a bunch of zeros, people; the only thing that matters is the fraction of what you, yourself, own. This is why spending a dollar for a candy bar is high finances when you're 10 years old, because it's probably more than 1% of your entire net worth. If a millionaire wants to spend $5K on some artwork, they can do so with the same level of consideration that some of the rest of us would put toward spending $50. To them, that number probably doesn't represent the same thing it does to you, but rather a much smaller fraction of their own, individual finances.
One of the first things I learned in sales is to NEVER judge people's spending based on your own wallet. I'd spoken to people who didn't have two nickles to rub together an hour after speaking to someone who was worth over $10 million. The only calculation toward how much they could spend was a proportion of their income. Anyone complaining about the amount would do good to learn that, too.
Also, Rukis is worth it. If I had that kind of money, I'd overbid on stuff just so I could compensate her for all her hard work giving me free comics that I previously appreciated without having the money to offer. Seriously.

Livin' the dream, Rukis! =3 No, seriously, I'm super happy for you that you've reached the point where your work can garner you a comfortable amount of income to live off of. I think that's the dream of just about EVERY furry artist, heh. Definitely be proud of all your hard work.
