SCAVENGERS: Vicki Dawson
Character sheet for Vicki Dawson of SCAVENGERS, a work in progress.
Vicki inherited the RECOVERY from her father and was determined to make a go of it, but tough financial times and a few bad runs of luck put the ship into foreclosure. In agreement with the bank, she's now an employee of the new owner, Jordan Hasely, but while the fox may be the boss, there is no doubt who is the captain of this ship. Will this squirrel be able to save up enough to buy the ship back from the wanna-be ship owner?

*nods* Well, still.
My usual trick for coming up with names is to hunt down something on behindthename.com or in a Library's names section (in the reference section, of course), and pick one with a meaning I like. Maybe corrupt it a bit, depending.

Yes to both questions.
If a ship has a sufficient power source, they could generate their own gate, but the power levels necessary leave this to massive capital ships that can charge up for long durations before they need to. It's not a quick process.
The jump gates instead are a network maintained by the government between systems. They are toss and catch systems- you need one to throw you and one to catch you. Miss that catcher and you'll be on a long journey out of system that may or may not ever end.
