Tools can be anything. Icing bags, various tips, scrapers, spatulas but if I need to get something done I will literally use whatever is at hand. I had a wedding cake a while ago that needed to be smoothed in a very specific way and I used the tags we were supposed to put out in our cases.
Per cake it depends on what it is. An average cake out in the book (ex - Batman) usually takes me 20 to 30 minutes depending on size and the amount of detail. The wedding and groom's cakes I just posted were ALL I worked on ALL night. (well... I did throw in a quick ninja turtles cake.) Wedding cakes or shaped cakes usually take me two days. I set them up, freeze them, and then decorate them the next day.
Cupcakes are quick and easy. We just line the table with them and then go down the line and ice, then thrown sprinkles on them, and then picks and done.
It is fun because I get to be creative. I love my job, just not necessarily my coworkers haha.
