Frederick Earl Lewis, 81, of Witter, Arkansas died October 18, 2013 at his home. He was born February 25, 1932 at Fayetteville, Arkansas the son of Oran Earl and Mary Sue Beard Lewis. He was a retired engineer with the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad with thirty years of service, He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Navy and was a member of the Saint Paul Bible Church, Boston Mountain Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society, Huntsville Post #10021 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Hayes-Smith Post #137 American Legion at Huntsville.
Fred was also a craftsman, and I'm honored to have some of his work in my collection.
The three locomotives (and associated cars behind the steam locos) are all 5/8" (roughly 1:19) scale narrow gauge models, designed to run on O scale three rail track using old Marx locomotive and four wheel freight car chassis-es. An additional view of the steam locos and cars can be seen at http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3731030/ .
The black locomotive at right is based on a trolley locomotive used in the Hawaiian cane fields and was custom built for me by Fred.
Fred was a great scrounger; not only did he use old Marx locos and chassis, he recycled old tin cans and the like for the superstructures! :D
The brass boxcab at right is a work in progress using the mechanism from an old Lionel 646 locomotive of mine; Fred cut the bronze frame and got the mechanism and outside trucks mounted.
Fred will be missed.
