
He couldn't go on any more as he found himself emotionally overwhelmed. At some point he'd fallen to his hands and knees, crying and valiantly holding back sobs, the effort keeping him from speaking. He was dimly aware of an arm over his shoulders, and through his grief he felt ashamed that he was breaking down in front of her like this, a complete emotional wreck. He hadn't realized how much fresher the wound would feel when spoken aloud than simply internalizing it, laying the truth bare, now feeling like he'd put a salt coated knife in a twisted it. But once he had started, there had been no closing the floodgates. It still tore at him, and once he stopped ignoring and denying it, his grief made up for lost time.
"Oh...wow..."
Penelope's voice of surprised wonder broke through to him, as that was perhaps the least appropriate, or at least expected, reaction for the scenario. But when he looked up to see what had prompted the remark, its source was blatantly obvious.
His wings.
In his emotional breakdown, he'd lost even the subconscious focus of keeping up the illusion, and now they were as plain as day, spread out and largely shielding the both of them from the gusts that could not seem to decide whether to be still or be a proper breeze. But to Damian's surprise, Penelope's face, as she rested on her knees beneath his wings beside him, was not one of confusion, or really even of shock, but of amazement.
