You really know how to use whites to just make things pop :D the technique reminded me of the used in Caravaggio's painting of 'Apostle Paul vision of Christ' (don't know the paintings name but I know the story) I should research the techniques name. But what it consist of is starting with a dark background and letting the forms and figures emerge from the background :) your whites are a bit to dramatic for something from 1571. It was how you painted in the wings and the upper torso of the figure that reminded me of that technique ^^ because they both appear to come out of the background :)
