AFAIK, it was big in times of ADnD 2nd edition, and then got dropped for a while.
Me, I loved the Dark Sun computer games. Like Fallout, but fantasy. Though the graphics wasn't outstanding even for early 1990s.
By the way, lots of people played the games, but had no access to sourcebooks or novels, which resulted in some wild speculations like the connection between all Thri-kreen being female and all Mules being male :)

I agree, though it hardly has one. Just using the CR is okay, even if you can get rid of half of it. The game was never designed for people to play monster races, stuff like faerie dragon is outright broken when you make a caster. But I digress. The art is very nice, I really like the nunchuks hehe.
I find it's a necessary balance to the devs' failure to place limits on magic and its capabilities. Access to a large range of spells via equipment keeps mages from being horrendously overpowered (Granted, n00bs who didn't understand how to build a gear kit bitched -furiously- about that anyway).
Contingency ethereality, freedom of movement, mind blank (use the level 5 psiwar version) and death ward grant hard immunity to the worst they can throw (I'm not aware whether any official errata has spelled out how damp power interacts with maximize spell/power or I'd put that up there too). If you don't have all four persistent by midgame you don't deserve to live. Over meta direct damage can still potentially kill you in one shot but the metagame is pretty much all about oneshotting or being oneshotted (plus clerics with divine meta rule that game). My last group just ran everything with 2x max HP just to put maxed out blood tanks back into the 2-3 shot range - it worked decently for us.
Either way, they really don't scale as hard as melee builds can and are subject to much broader immunities.
