Flinters Roosuit Study
I'm planning on doing a full body Flinters Roo fursuit. Before I do so, I like to plan it out with ideas and compromises. I did a roo suit already and it turned out great, but si more for stage / posing and not so much for active use. I want the Flinters Roo suit to be something I can do more zany stuff in. Oh, and to pose with Duncan and Oz and all the great mobsters.

            Category Artwork (Traditional) / All
                    Species Kangaroo
                    Size 765 x 1000px

While there are some material costs involved, it isn't so bad over time. It does add up though. The fur is the most expensive and if you're willing to use simple craft fur / fun fur, then you can do it affordably.
I'll likely go through 15 yards of fabric for the roo. I know that's a lot, but I always buy more than I need because it's amazing how much material can eat up. Figure about $8/yd for the mateiral and that's $120 in fur right there alone. Watch for sales at the sewing supply shops. They often have 40-50% off sales on all cut fabric so it may be worth waiting a few weeks for one of those sales to come along.
I believe I should be able to build this new roo suit for about $200 or less in materials. So far I've bought:
10 sheets of plastic canvas $6.00
1 roll of 16 guage wire $7.00
1000 zipties $8.00
1 SPST click on, click off switch $3.00
1 CPU Fan $6.00
Misc nuts/bolts for hinged jaw $3.00
2 floam / craft foam sheets for eyes $2.00
1 yard of felt $3.00
I still have yet to buy PVC pipe mounts for the ears and foam to build up the cheeks and such with. That will be 1" foam sheet from Walmart or similar for $6.00 a roll which is more than I'll need.
Total head materials including fur should be about $50-$60.00, I expect. I'm doing two heads at once, one for me and one to sell (fox head) to help offset costs though. :)

A possibility for better attachment for ears is something I saw on a HUGE eared critter this year at FC: Rare earth magnets (or Hard Drive Magnets) They are SUPER strong, and small.
You can use three per ear, though Go + - + and on the other half of the ear go - + - So they only attach ONE way :)
Looks cute!

I also like to use PVC pipe for the mounts so they are strong, easily removable, not knocked off easily (magnets) or damage the substructure.
I also put fans inside the hollow centers of the PVC pipe mounts for exhaust.
Traveling is SO much easier when they can be removed, true.

Some thing that should be noted about using magnets in a suit.
Make absolutely positive that your hotel room keys do NOT come any where near the magnets, since it tends to wipe them out.
The HUGE eared critted you mentioned, roomed with me at FC and found out this nifty little fact the hard way when the wearer could not unlock our hotel room.

                    cool cools.
i'm getting a new suit fairly soon, but i'm a weird. i like the super stream lined moving jaw sets. it's hard to think of adding anything to the insides :P all i know is that i saw pictures of the HUGE suit that had that heavy fan in it O.o but that fan was enormous and why anyone would want a nearly full box fan in a suit is preposterous for moving around. though a smaller cpu case fan could be alright :) just that one box fan O.o i mean wow, even if you were very susceptible to heat stroke, i think trying to walk around with that one would be even worse for you lol!
