I've seen shorter...
i've actually seen a campaign end and be over before i had a character rolled up.
came downstairs and they said roll another character the one you made won't work for this new campaign. I protested a bit but they were insistant i had to reroll a character after not even being able to use the one i just rolled. i basically did just what the bird did there. got up and said "call me when you guys got your shit together" and left
didn't play again for almost a month before they finally called me back.

My brother and I tried to set up a game of "Paranoia" but we never made it past the character creation phase because none of us had any idea what the fuck we were doing. I thought it was simple but arg, maybe someday we'll have to go to comic shop or something and find somebody who knows how to do.
Incidentally, I think "Paranoia" would be a good game for BM Immy and friends, after the whole point of that game is not to win but to fail in the most spectacular way possible!

Dear God... I... it's like you're describing my life!.
I was DM for a small group that met in a local game store. Every one of them made characters that had some reason not to all be together at the same time. Tavern? The monk didn't drink and didn't like being around those who did. Okay, how about an inn? Nope, the druid would rather camp outside town. Ooookay... you all must need weapons, how about you all go to the blacksmith at the same time? Wizard has no use for weapons.
When I finally corralled them into the same place (which, apparently, was a bakery, 'cause everyone loves cake), they all had elaborate back-story reasons not to trust each other. The druid was deeply offended by the warrior's animal head-dress, the cleric wouldn't go anywhere with the rogue, and apparently the warrior's entire village was burned down by an evil wizard and now he's a bigot to magic users...
I asked if they all wanted to reconsider their character's motivation and back-stories? Nope. Apparently it's my job as DM to just 'make it work'.
...
Yeah.
By the end of the session I was an inch away from changing the big bad of the evening from a lvl 3 cultist, to a Tiamat!

Oh boy, so close to real life. If only most DM's would have the balls to just walk out on their players, preferably with a "You guys fucking suck." on their lips.
I mean, people want to engage in these games, they want to play and participate in a great adventure, then they make the most antisocial characters ever, resist the DM and fuck over his campaign and in general do anything to disrupt the group. I'll never get it. :I

I've been in a couple different campaigns, none of which have reached the end. Nowadays, I typically play big, dumb (or, at least, quiet) characters with powerful melee builds.
Shugwar is close to starting a Mass Effect campaign for the World of Darkness system, and I'm going to play a Krogan C:
