Moth update: Pupae
A few people commented on my recent journal and wanted to see moth updates, so I figured I could stick a few in scraps without bugging everyone else too much. The pupae in the picture are a luna moth and two cecropias. The whole entry for April with a diagram I made about the parts of the cocoon is here: http://marycapaldi.com/2014/04/17/a.....and-the-pupae/

Taking care of the cocoons isn't difficult or time-consuming as long as you do a little research first. They don't need to eat and won't need to as adults, either, so it's just a matter of keeping them safe from other creatures and temperature extremes. If you raise them from eggs/caterpillars, though, it's more effort - they need fresh food and waste removed daily as well as environment monitoring. I got these already in cocoons and was hoping to do caterpillars for next year's flight. Without a female this time around, I'll have to wait to report on that.
I have a pretty decent camera and plan on taping it if at all possible as well as maybe using my webcam to have a stream with the moths. Taping the eclosure is mainly a matter of catching it in action! It's not a lengthy process, so if they start when I'm not in the room, I could easily miss it. It's unlikely all three will come out at the same time, though. There will be several opportunities. :)
oh this is so AWESOME!!! I saw several butterflies eclose all at once in the butterfly/moth nursery of a local botanical garden butterfly exhibit. I was so surprised that about 5-6 of them all emerged within a minute of each other. (granted there were about 100+ in the nursery, but it was so cool to see!) It IS quick - like tremble tremble and poof they're out. emerging butterflies look so odd bc they're more body than wings. I sure hope you get to see it yourself!
I love the info that you share on the link. i can see the outlines in the full view, too. thanks for sharing - i eagerly look forward to updates!

I'm just waiting and hoping! I've seen videos of moths like mine emerging, and they do look funny before their wings are all spread out. Like fluffy wormy things. I've been keeping an eye on them and bringing them into my work area whenever possible, so with any luck, I won't miss a thing. :)
I'm not that good at it either; I totally understand wanting to check in. :)
The cocoons are doing fine! Several other moth people I know have started to have eclosures, but it's still early for many areas. Mine aren't acting any differently just yet. Something should happen within the next couple weeks.
