Aaaw Russell is reading to the children, ain't that sweet? c:
Russell believes that if Christians can come into our athiest schools and try and convert us to Christianity, then athiests can go into christian schools and convert them to ahtieism..or however you spell it =P
For those who don't know, The God Delusion is a very interesting book, by Richard Dawkins, explaining why God is not real.
It's not just bashing Christian though, it's actually very compelling.

It could have been much worse: he might have terrified the little Christians 2 B with Mark Twain's Letters From the Earth.
By the way, thank you for posting the link to your Webcomic: I've been enjoying it... especially the strips about the dog who drinks too much. Sardonic, yes, but funny, too.

Oh don't worry about him Alex, he's from SJ, they always fly past the humour in a comic and nit pick on the things that don't matter ^D I've been trying to tell him for a while now to just enjoy the joke xD
Of course I'm sure he realises that if I put the name of the book on the cover, you wouldn't see the name very well and thus destroy the joke.

Another explanation would be...SHUT UP >:C

Ahem?
First: I said it was awesome. I totally got the joke, and thought it was great.
Second: Trying to tell me for a while to just enjoy the joke? When have you told me that?
Third: Dude. If you flipped the whole image over, and then reversed the cover and the text on the banner, it'd be accurate. :I

HAWHAWHAWHAW!!! That is fantastic. I wish that'd happen in real life. Keep those poor li'l pups from having their brains fucked!
It amazes me that Christians, the most recruitin'-est folks around, pitch such a fit at the mere idea that atheists exist. I think that if your position is so fragile that you can't even allow your supporters to hear the other side of the story for fear they'll defect in droves... then you ain't standin' on much, Reverend Bubba. ;)

Yeah, but you're grouping a handful of extremists in too broad of a classification. Granted they're more the vocal and seen easier than the rest of the bunch, but for the most part, the majority is far, far more tolerant of other people's beliefs. The Bible is filled with reoccurring themes of showing love and compassion for everyone. No exceptions made.
Also, I sincerely doubt that these hate filled people masquerading as Christians can really be thought of as such. These people are either perverting Christianity for their own purposes, or just using it as a false platform (of sorts) to base their own anger and hatred on.
So as you can see, it's still not fair to stereotype even in the case of religious groups.

I'm really sad to see you say these things, because I've heard them too often before.
>"The Bible is filled with reoccurring themes of showing love and compassion for everyone. No exceptions made. "
Actually, there IS a very prominent exception. Jesus says that any sin is forgivable, except blaspheming the holy spirit. He says not once, but twice that anyone who does will never be forgiven. "Whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come." (Matthew 12:32) And of course, those who commit this unforgivable sin will suffer eternally in Hell. I myself deny the holy spirit. So unless my atheist beliefs are right, your God is going to burn me eternally for the unforgivable crime of saying that I do not believe in him. I cannot call that love or compassion.
>"Also, I sincerely doubt that these hate filled people masquerading as Christians can really be thought of as such."
I'm sorry, but that's a logical fallacy called "No True Scotsman" (Dunno why). The fact is, people like the Westboro baptists who protest at soldier's funerals and say that God hates fags and God hates America... These people are truer Christians than the majority of moderates. These people almost certainly know the Bible better than me or you and they don't choose to sugarcoat the bitter parts.
True, people often use religion as a way to rationalize their cruelty ('I'm not beating up this queer because I'm ashamed of gay feelings in myself; I'm doing it because God wants me to!'), but the reason it's so easy to do so is that the Bible really does say it's okay to do a lot of things we would think are immoral today.
Leviticus 20:13 Kill the gays: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."
Genesis 17:10 God wants us all to mutilate the genitals of newborn male babies: "This is my covenant which ye shall keep between me and you and they seed after thee: Every man and child among you shall be circumcised."
Genesis 19:8 Lot, the only righteous man in Sodom, offers his virgin daughters to a crowd of men eager to rape the two male angels in his house: "Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof."
Exodus 20:24 God asks us to kill animals for his pleasure. "An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee."
Exodus 21:2-4 God says slavery is okay, so long as you let them go eventually. But if your slave's wife has children, you can keep them and the wife. "If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself."
Jeremiah 19:9 The Lord speaks: "And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend"
If you believe that a book with such passages is the word of God, and that your God is kind, then how can I *not* be wary of you?
My very best friend, whom I have known since kindergarten, is a Muslim. So I can accept that individual religious people as good and loving. But at the same time, I also ache for him when I see how his religion infringes on his life and his free will. I hate knowing that his happiness is shackled by some archaic book written by a long-dead charlatan. I hate seeing how his religion has handicapped his thinking in certain areas. I hate knowing that his holy book commands him to murder me for not believing in it too. And I want to just sit him down and force-feed him for his own good when I see him suffering through his fasting month, where he's not allowed to even drink a glass of water for twelve hours every day.
I do not hate most religious people, but I _deeply_ hate their religions. And I hate the people who indoctrinate others with irrational, unprovable, hateful beliefs. Especially when it's children. (Ever seen "Jesus Camp"? My heart broke for those poor kids). I don't hate people who have been lied to their entire lives and can't be expected to know better. But I cannot tolerate those who refuse to ever question their beliefs if given a chance. The simple truth is, the only way we can make our beliefs stronger is by constantly challenging them. If they are good, then they will withstand. If they are misguided or unsupported by reality, they should be discarded. When we are proven wrong, we shouldn't cling to our old beliefs out of fear of change. Instead, we should happily embrace the truth and be glad that we have learned. To me, facts will always be more important than faith.
I believe strongly in some form of afterlife. I believe that everything alive, or that is truly loved, has a soul. I believe life has too many coincidences for it all to be random chance. Yet I also accept that I could very likely be wrong in these beliefs. And if I am, I will accept whatever turns out to be true.
I'm rambling now, but I'll end with this: We are judged by the company we keep. It may not be fair, and it may not be accurate, but it's far more fair and accurate than pretending that the company someone keeps has no relevance to that person at all. Religious people, as a whole, are responsible for things I find morally repellant to an excruciating degree. So if you say you are one of them, it is not wrong for me to be suspicious of you. I don't want to be, but I have to be. Your handbook states that you have an obligation to kill me.
"If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you ... Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die." -- Deuteronomy 13:6-10
I am asking you to serve the 'god' known as rationality. So if your faith in your Holy Father's words is true, then I'll provide the stones and you can do what you must. After all, you have been commanded by the allmighty, and you must obey him in order to enter the kingdom of Heaven. But I bet stoning me will take a long time, and that I'll bleed an awful lot. Are you really sure that you can go through with it?

I have to give you credit for having a very good grasp of theology. To be short and to the point, that is indeed what it comes down to. If you look at it from the “glass half full” point of view, though, it is indeed quite compassionate. I don’t have to live a perfect life to make it to heaven. All I need to do is admit I’m sinner and ask God to forgive me. Furthermore, in order to do this, God gave His Son as a sacrifice to take the punishment for me and the rest of the world. Granted, you don’t believe that to be true, but if you can just put yourself in my shoes for a moment, you can see how I can view that as being very compassionate.
“I'm sorry, but that's a logical fallacy called "No True Scotsman" (Dunno why). How do you know that they know the Bible better than you and I? Sure they know the verses condemning all sorts of things, but what about the rest? What about the verses that deal with forgiveness and compassion and such. They don’t seem to know those.
“But I tell you not to resist an evildoer. On the contrary, whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well.”
--Matt. 5:39
“Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
--Colossians 3:13

Leviticus 20:13 Kill the gays: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."
I don’t see the passage specifically telling people to go out and kill gays. Actually, the punishment for all sins is death, but Jesus has already taken that punishment for us.
Genesis 17:10 God wants us all to mutilate the genitals of newborn male babies: "This is my covenant which ye shall keep between me and you and they seed after thee: Every man and child among you shall be circumcised."
I wouldn’t call that mutilation. Ask a Jewish person and you’ll get a much more enthusiastic response of the same. Actually (without getting graphic) it’s been shown that circumcision reduces the chances of infection. Maybe God was just looking out for His people?
http://www.islamawareness.net/Circu.....cumcision.html
Genesis 19:8 Lot, the only righteous man in Sodom, offers his virgin daughters to a crowd of men eager to rape the two male angels in his house: "Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof."
I don’t see God’s approval of that. Lot was righteous, but still no where near perfect.
Actually, I don’t see any indication that God took any pleasure in that. Those animals were sacrificed as temporary atonement for the sins of people from Old Testament times.
You have to remember that the times were different back then. If someone was extremely poor, they would better off as a cared for slave than starving in the street. I imagine it was similar to the indentured servants of the middle ages.
Jeremiah 19:9 The Lord speaks: "And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend"
Again, this is not something that God is doing or approves of. If you look at the context of the chapter instead of a single verse you’d see that God has caused a famine in the land because they have turned against God. Rather than repent, they turn to cannibalism to ease their hunger.
If you believe that a book with such passages is the word of God, and that your God is kind, then how can I *not* be wary of you?

There’s no need for that kind of talk. We can discuss our views like mature adults without all the sarcasm. I can respect your beliefs and I’m sure, you can respect mine. That’s really all I wanted in the first place. There’s no point in having the classic Christianity Vs. Atheism debate. I’m very set in my beliefs as I’m sure you are in yours.
Even if you can't respect my beliefs, that's fine too. Thinking about it now, it was rather silly for me to take offense in the first place. I apologize.
I had no idea what this would do, I guess it's my fault for putting this on the internet xD
first off, this was a rebuttal to all the Christians that have come into my schools and preached about Jesus to young influential minds, they're going to atheists and trying to convert them to Christianity at a young age, this was just a simple funny comic saying "why can't atheists go into Christian schools and preach to convert them to atheism?"
Say whatever you want, it does not defeat the fact that Christians come into schools and preach about God (we had someone come in 3 times a week and also made us sing songs about God and Jesus)which is purely what this is about, I don't want to make this post too long, so I just want to say: I don't hate Christians, I admire their faith in their belief, as long as it's not affecting anyone else, but I don't like it when they keep trying to convert me when I'm a happy atheist. I don't stereotype, and when I do it's purely and only for humour. I'm sorry you did not find the picture funny,I wish people could laugh more at their own life style ( people do it to me all the time, because I'm vegetarian and English) but if you don't find it funny and/or find it offensive, then I am very sorry about it. But please try to understand that I am not a hater of other peoples beliefs and life styles, I just do comics to make people laugh =/

Knowing the situation now, I can see where you're comming from. That's just kind of an odd thing for someone to do. There's a time and place to talk about your faith, and I don't think that was it. If the exact same thing were to happen to me, I'm sure I'd be rather annoyed too (especially after the third time).
No, no, you have every right to take offense (In fact you dealt with it far more politely than a lot of other people I've seen on the net). We don't have control over how something makes us feel, but we can control how we react to it.
And I wasn't being sarcastic at ALL about you needing to kill me. It's in your book, it is the word of God. If you serve God, you must obey his word. You have a *duty* to kill me, and anyone else who tries to sway you from your beliefs. Just like your God, under the name of Allah, says that my best friend must also kill me for not following the rules of the Koran. You can either choose to honor this duty, or not. You just have to decide for yourself if you will be forgiven if you choose not to.
I won't go back and forth on the Bible bits because you did make some fair points, and I admit I'm far from a Biblical scholar. (Still, "It's taken out of context" is something I hear as a defense so often it makes me wonder how can almost an entire book be taken out of context...) I will say though that I take an extremely firm stance on circumcision. It is an abomination. The U.N. recognizes female genital mutilation as a human rights violation, so why not male genital mutilation? Even if it may prevent infection, the benefits can't possibly outweigh the risk. Not only does it severely impair a man's pleasure and sex life when he's an adult, but there's great potential for a doctor to screw up and chop off too much. I have a friend whose penis would be an inch longer today if the doctor hadn't cut him. There are also cases where doctors have caused permanent nerve damage in that area, or cut so much that they simply got rid of it all, gave the boy female hormones and told the parents to raise him as a girl. It doesn't happen often, but even once is more than I'm willing to accept.
And if that's not bad enough, in a process called 'oral suction' a Rabbi will suck the wound after he makes the cut. Rabbis Suck Babies' Cocks. It is not an exaggeration; it is a truth they will actually loudly defend. There was a case in New York of a Rabbi who had herpes, and there were three confirmed cases of him passing it onto infant boys (and possibly many more unconfirmed cases). One of the boys died. This man killed a baby boy, and the only 'punishment' he received was being asked not to perform circumcisions anymore.
But regardless of how much is lost and what the long-term risks may be, the simple fact is that IT INVOLVES CUTTING OFF PART OF A NEWBORN BABY'S GENITALS. Science has shown that babies actually feel sensation even *more* strongly, so if the procedure is done without anasthetic (as is often the case), the pain is beyond imagining. I have watched video of a circumcision, and that poor child's screams were the most horrible, heart-shattering thing I've ever heard.
Think of it this way: if some crazy person were breaking into people's houses and cutting off baby's scrotums, the media would rightly declare him a monster and there would be an enormous manhunt to find him and punish him. He'd likely get the death penalty. Yet because the body part is different, and because we as a culture have been numbed to the pain it causes, we allow this to happen every single day without a thought to it.
(That, and I simply must say something here: "I don’t see the passage specifically telling people to go out and kill gays. Actually, the punishment for all sins is death, but Jesus has already taken that punishment for us." Since these laws were decreed in the Old Testament, before Jesus' birth, it cannot be denied that this WAS an order to the people of that time to punish gays with literal death.)
You're obviously a thoughtful person. The fact that you read my post and offered counterarguments instead of dismissing them or insulting me impresses me greatly. Even if I disagree with you, I can acknowledge that you don't believe you can change your beliefs. Maybe that will change, maybe it will not.
But beyond all that, I ask, _why_ would your God want people to sacrifice innocent animals to him? Why doesn't he seem to want that of us now? And why would he want men to scar their sons for life? Is it at all possible the answer is because he is not an infallible creator of men, but a *creation* of men? Men who lived thousands of years ago and had a far smaller awareness of the world?
Simply put; I acknowledge that I could be wrong in my beliefs and that God may indeed exist (or Buddha, or Shiva, or whoever). Can you acknowledge the *possibility* that you may be wrong too? Not _are_ you wrong, but is it possible that you _could_ be?
And I wasn't being sarcastic at ALL about you needing to kill me. It's in your book, it is the word of God. If you serve God, you must obey his word. You have a *duty* to kill me, and anyone else who tries to sway you from your beliefs. Just like your God, under the name of Allah, says that my best friend must also kill me for not following the rules of the Koran. You can either choose to honor this duty, or not. You just have to decide for yourself if you will be forgiven if you choose not to.

To be as brief as possible, yes, I likewise acknowledge that I could be wrong in my beliefs as well. I had a professor in college who was an atheist, but he respected other beliefs too. He said that the only way to find out for sure what the truth of this matter is, is to die. I think it was good way to get to heart of the matter.
Again, I apologize for taking this the wrong way. Understanding the situation inspiring the picture now, it doesn't bother me anymore.

I'm stunned to hear you say this, but in a good way. Too many people (especially on the internet), both religious and atheist alike, are so committed to being 100% right that they tear themselves to pieces through constantly denying any evidence that might prove them wrong. Actually, admitting when we're wrong is essential to learning. And those who acknowledge their own fallibility are significantly less likely to try to force their beliefs on others. If you don't do that, then I have no problem with you at all. Go in peace, my friend.

PS.! I finally got a copy of the book the other day! Paperback, so it has extra stuff in the front of the book about how the Hardcover was received, and how critics acclaimed him, while the ones who gave negative reviews were blasted away. Lots of good stuff from PZ Myers too. Hurray!
