Ruderoo Design vertical banner
WHY MAKE A BANNER?
Banners are all part of brand identification. When you're a dealer at a convention, you are the product. The artist IS the brand. You need to market yourself so people know who you are. I had other banners I took to cons for RUDEROO DESIGN, but people didn't know that was me, not even after I put "by Flinters!" on the banner. The roo was on there, small, and not well seen.
I decided on a nice tall vertical banner featuring my artist persona, something that fans and customers will readily identify as being, well, ME. And to help, there's that big ol' FLINTERS on the sign. My studio name is at the bottom since it's less important.
Now you know what to look for at Anthrocon in July. When you see this sign, you know you've found me.
THAT'S COOL. HOW DO I GET ONE FOR MYSELF?
Staples offers commercial trade show banners for a really good price.
redpandacase recommended them to me after she had a banner made for her in a quick turnaround service. Curious, I checked it out.
The largest banner they make is a 6 foot tall, 30" wide banner that they make a portable stand for. They do have an 8 foot tall banner too, but no stand, so less useful.
SURELY BANNERS LIKE THIS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE?
The banner sells for about $40 printed up. They had a sale dropping it to $28 so I had no reason not to try it out. The stands are $40, no discount there, but really, that's not bad. Add standard delivery and sales tax for my state and it's about $80 total. I upgraded from the indoor light vinyl to the heavy duty outdoor vinyl for $10 more, added some corner hangers for using it without the stand (like hanging on a wall at a con) and ended up at $110 total.
Not bad!
YOU MUST BE A GRAPHICS PROFESSIONAL TO MAKE THE IMAGE READY FOR PRINT
Nah, it's easy stuff anyone can do.
If you're curious about the graphic, they make available a PSD Photoshop file that is layered with guides for full bleed, printable areas, and crop marks. It's worth your time to download it and use that to put your art on.
The file cannot be more than 12 Mb in size. I ended up with a 100 dpi image at the sizes I was working in.
How will it work out? I don't know yet, but in about a week it should be ready, so I will post photos then.
