Lieutenant Martinez fires Rocket launcher, "No shot wide!" misses and hits Squaddie Macleod and surrounding cover, Squaddie Macleod is killed (Rocket launcher), Thin man pack is revealed and moves to cover.

You're welcome, I've been playing Enemy unknown up the Wazoo so I know how it feels to play on impossible difficulty....
This macro sectoid is just way too accurate to how I feel on the very difficult abduction missions that have the engineers I need as a reward to frickin build a new satillite uplink.

They're waaay worse in the 'long war' mod. Sectoids with low profile mind flay and psy panic that can come in pods of up to 6 at a time? Welp I'm gone, good luck rookies! I didn't really need Russia anyway...
With that said they are actually balanced out with the other changes in the mod. But that first mission, oh god.

Yeah, while I do love the new additions to the game, I really feel the whole effort is a bt of a step down in a lot of ways.
The shift of base defense and assault missions into being one time story events etc was a bit disappointing. And like you said, the lack of background information was sorely missed.
With that said I do still love it and it's predecessors.

I applauded the skill system which makes your soldiers distinct, and there were neat new weapons too, unfortunately the whole "aliens come in groups of three and stay where they landed until you see them" thing made each mission predictable after a while - even if the enemy has Ethereals or Sectoid commanders, they will stay safely in the cockpit instead of going out and actively hunting you, or trying to hide, like in the old games.
That said, it's still the best of the X-Com wannabee games out there (brrr that After-something series) and I bought the collector's edition to support them - I hope they get to make Terror from the Deep too eventually.
