It's worth pointing out we're discussing fiction here. Anything which can be used for alternative uses is almost certainly going to wind up being used in that manner if it is more dramatic and moves the story forward.
In this particular case, we're talking about macropilia fiction. As such, this device will probably see use for this goal so long as it is simultaneously possible to be used in other means. Accidents are likely, if not almost guaranteed.

Well if the other experiments with it we've seen Ben do are any indication (the commissions) then there's some signs it might possibly wind up being used for things other than this hunger issue. At least once.

Oh? I rather assumed "same universe" and this was backstory to introduce the characters.
Either way, I will note "Matter" has been really entertaining for watching it (schedule and pacing notwithstanding - nothing you can do about that if it's just a side project instead of actual work :) ) and I do like the whole thing.
