And if it got sick would you take it to a doctor or a veterinarian? I'm leaning towards veterinarian since they have more experience treating various species. I remember an account of a retired flight surgeon who was supposedly given orders to take notes on the autopsy of a space alien. He mentioned several times that he could not understand why there was not at least one zoologist or veterinarian on hand because the alien's anatomy was so different that he had no idea what he was looking at and felt a zoologist or veterinarian would.

Maybe "pet" is the wrong word, a surrogate child or younger sibling.
