So now please enjoy the next chapter and arc of Raider's Steel.
Ch. 6 Tenacity (Or How Raider Got His Name part2)
Deep inside the Kecleon’s shop, Tony was already being careful enough as it was to not make a sound. Now that psychotic Grumpig could be almost anywhere. His efforts to find Steel were now that much harder. There just had to be some way to escape that crazed lunatic. Tony looked over the shelves, each of them were marked with a variety of items that the Kecleon brothers were selling today. Rocks? Sticks? More rocks… Shiny rocks… Cds… Apples… Wait… those are TM’s!
Tony carefully balanced himself atop a barrel to view the compact disks. They were marked with their numbers in bold letters, but told what they held in smaller print. It didn’t matter which ones he learned, so long as he learned something. He grabbed one and put it on his head. Nothing happened… he took a closer look at the tag. TM22… Solarbeam? Can’t learn that.
Tony kept looking… 14… no, that’s Blizzard. He couldn’t see a TM31. Tony recalled that one was Brick Break. What was 28? Tony couldn’t see as he reached for it and slipped it over his head… after a white flash, Tony now knew how to Dig really deep holes. Useless! How about TM45? No time to read it… Another flash. Another successful draw…. too bad he learned Attract… Yeah, like that would be useful here.
Tony needed something offensive…TM66 and TM67… no time to be picky… he learned both Shadow Claw and Payback at the same time… He really needed a aspirin after this as his head started hurting. One more try… What about TM90…?
“Gotcha,” Pobon stated, the whirl of the TMs had got his attention moments before. He tackled his way through the curtains. He finally found the Riolu, but something was off. He was just standing there. “You finally giving up?”
The Grumpig used Psychic, but the Riolu wouldn’t budge from that spot. Pobon tried again, but still nothing happened. He didn’t want to hurt the Riolu, but he didn’t think he’d have to use anymore force than this. Pobon strained raising the level of strength for his Psychic, but it got to the point were he might as well try to grab the brat. He did so and Tony shattered.
Pobon was left confused as to what happened. He looked at where the Riolu used to be standing and found TM90 sitting there. Below it read the human scribbles that read, “Substitute”.
‘Nice try fatso,’ Tony mentally thought. Pobon couldn’t tell where it was coming from, only that it was clear enough to know the human was in the same room.
“You used the TMs,” the still invisible Pobon looked around the storage room for any sign of the original, “I didn’t take you for a thief, human… Of course, I thought you were smart… now I see you’re very foolish.”
Pobon lifted a sheet with his psychic powers, but Tony wasn’t hiding under any of them.
‘If I’m a fool, then what does that make you?’
“True, but do you know what the Kecleon Brothers will do to you when they find out what you did,” Pobon tried a few of the chests next, “they don’t take kindly to thieves.”
‘I am not a thief,’ Tony reasoned to himself, ‘I just used without permission is all.’
“Funny… I know that you were desperate,” Pobon continued his search, periodically opening each chest as his eyes fell on them, “but you just signed your own death sentence.”
‘I don’t care,’ Tony ‘yelled’ at the Grumpig, ‘I’m not letting you take away who I am without a fight.’
“I’m not taking away who you are,” Pobon tried to argue, “You’ll still have your core personality, you just wont remember being human.”
‘You don’t even know who I am to begin with,’ Tony argued, ‘If you did, then you’d know that I never break a promise.’
“Promises are worthless,” the Grumpig slammed all the chests he was mentally connected to, “unless you have the power to back them up. You don’t understand how cruel our world is to humans. I’m not going to let you get yourself killed just because you made a promise that you can’t keep! Never considering the feelings of those you’ll leave behind. To leave me in a flash of light with nothing, but the painful memory of your very existence.”
The Riolu’s thoughts fell quiet. From his hiding place, Tony could see that Pobon really didn’t want to do this. The tone Pobon used said that this was about something more personal. Even his aura was wavering a little. Something he was holding back. It was clear to Tony, ‘who was it?’
“What…?”
‘Who did you lose,’ Tony asked again, ‘what happened to them that was so traumatic for you that you have to go after me like this?’
“she… shut up…,” Pobon skipped the next chest.
‘Are you really any better than the ones who took her away from you?’
“You don’t know anything!”
‘Of course I don’t. That’s why I asked.’
“A human who gives up as easily as you could never understand.”
‘Give up! Who do you think that I left back in my world,’ Tony shouted, ‘you think that I wanted to leave them? I died to protect my best friend! And you know what? It Was My Fault He was in Danger to Begin With!’
The Grumpig fell speechless. He didn’t bother looking through anymore hiding places. The one he lost had said the exact same thing, “it was my fault”, before the final blow struck her back into the ‘human world’. Tony took this moment to make his move.
‘If only I listened to him…,’ Tony thought, his memory of his own stubbornness floated over to the Grumpig, ‘But I didn’t… I just wanted to prove to Damian… To show those jerks that he was stronger than they thought. All he needed was to push himself a little.’
Tony pause this thoughts for a moment or two, as he silently slipped down from the rafters ‘You know what else? I don’t regret it as much as I would have. Steel showed me how much I meant to Damian. He never forgot about me. Do you really think that your friend would want you to forget about her, just because of what happened?’
“No…,” Pobon dried the tears from his eyes, before making his decision, “but it could have saved her, then I wouldn’t have to.”
And with that, Pobon turned to the chest that he had skipped before. Tony had slipped over to it and barely had time to peak inside. Pobon mentally slammed its lid down. Tony found himself lucky that his arm hadn’t been chopped off. Then screamed as Pobon dragged the Riolu from the chest’s side.
“Gotcha brat,” the still invisible Pobon smirked
“No,” Tony flailed around in the air like an astronaut ejected into deep space. Making it seem as if he was completely helpless. Once he got the hang of being in the air he turned to face the Grumpig, aiming himself.
“Shadow Claw,” Tony’s paw slashed out with a giant black shadow, he struck the floating pearl directly. Losing all concentration, the Grumpig returned to being visible. As Pobon checked for any damages, his entire image turned a ghostly violet. Tony made a mad dash for the chest again, it had to contain Steel in it. He barely reached it before Pobon retaliated with another Psychic. This time Tony was flung over the Grumpig and back to the ground.
“It’s time for you to take your medicine.”
“No,” Tony struggled to his feet as he developed a dark aura about him, “I think it’s time for some Payback!”
With that Tony charged directly at Pobon. The Psychic tried to block the assault with his powers, but he couldn’t stop the Dark-Type Attack from bashing directly into his exposed gut. The pig’s entire image shifted to black as he turned from a Ghost-type to a Dark. Tony grinned at how powerful he felt, despite he knew he wasn’t nearly strong enough to win. That and the fact that he was going to pass out at any moment. Tony shot out another Shadow Claw for the chest. He then used his much longer appendage to launch himself at the wooden container.
“I’ve got you Steel,” Tony sighed as he opened the chest once more, only to find it barren. The Grumpig laughed from behind him. Tony quickly realized that it was just a ruse. Pobon had used what little intelligence Tony had against him. Pobon mentally shoved the exhausted Riolu into the box.
“No! Let me out,” Tony screamed, punching every side of the container, “let me out!”
“That’s right, human,” Pobon stated from somewhere above him, “exhaust yourself. It’ll only make things easier for me later on.”
“Yo, just what is going on in here,” the Kecleon brothers finally picked up the courage to see what the Grumpig was doing in their back room.
“I just caught a little thief is all.”
“A THIEF,” the pair shouted as they charged in like a pair of mad Tauros, “NO ONE STEALS FROM THE KECLEON SHOP!”
“I’ve already got him,” Pobon assured the two, shaking the box. Not even giving the Riolu time to think, “He put up quite a fight, but I finally caught him.”
“In that thing,” the Blue Kecleon pointed at the box.
“Don’t worry. I’ll make certain that he’ll face punishment for his crimes,” Pobon headed for the exit.
“Oh no you don’t,” the (still fat) red Kecleon blocked the doorway.
“It’s not that we don’t trust you,” the blue one stole the box.
“Wait, don’t. He’ll escape.”
“But we still have to check,” the pair said as they unlocked the latch and opened it up. They were shocked to see the baby Riolu inside. He looked as if he had been crying and was bruised up, “is this some kind of joke!?!”
“This is not what it looks like,” Pobon backed up from the pair.
‘Isn’t it,’ Tony mocked his tormentor, ‘because it’s exactly what it looks like.’
“How dare you attack an innocent baby,” the blue one accused as his brother tried to comfort the crying infant.
“Innocent? Exactly who do you think did this to me,” Pobon pointed out his injuries. They were small, but still noticeable.
“Now how could this little guy do something like that to you,” the blue one rubbed the Riolu’s back, trying to comfort him, “he doesn’t even know any attacks yet.”
“Doesn’t know,” Pobon almost spilled the beans if not for the Kecleon interrupting him.
“And even if he did,” the blue one pointed at the Grumpig’s dark skin, “You certainly wouldn’t be in a Dark-Type color.”
“He raided your supply of TMs,” Pobon pointed out, “He knows a lot more than he’s letting on.”
“He doesn’t know any better,” the red one defended this time ready to pounce on the pig if necessary.
“At so young an age,” the blue one started the next sentence while the red finished it for him, “it’s no wonder he went wild with attacking you. He understand what he’s learned.”
“Doesn’t,” Pobon groaned at the ridiculousness of it all. Telling them the truth would get him killed, if not because he was human, then for the sin of stealing from the Kecleon brothers. Keeping up the lie not only prevents him from protecting the Riolu from himself, but if word gets out that he was bested by a mere infant… he’d never hear the end of it, “My mistake.”
‘What?’
“Clearly he’s too young to handle such abilities,” Pobon smiled again, “it would be best if he forgets them until he’s old enough.”
‘What!?!’
“That would be best,” the pair stated.
‘What the what now,’ Tony could barely guess what the Grumpig’s intentions meant. The human world had a Move Deleter, but he never thought that Pokémon could do it too. Although, this particular Pokémon would take so much more than a few TM Moves.
“Let’s go see Ludo about it,” the blue one stated as he turned for the door.
“You don’t have to bother the Scraggy about it,” Pobon announced, “I can do it myself, just don’t don’t fine Mellon for the TM’s he used okay?”
“You sure drive a hard bargain,” the red Kecleon looked to his brother as they thought about it.
“But he’s in no condition for anything else at the moment,” the blue Kecleon for once didn’t complete his brother’s sentence as he rocked Tony, “Look he’s shaking like a leaf.”
“Weren’t you the one that was just saying how we should take him to see Ludo,” the Grumpig asked.
“Yes, but…” the blue one shifted Tony in his arms, “I think he’s been through enough today…”
The pair nodded to each other. After that the Kecleon brothers took the shaking Riolu away. In an attempt to calm Tony, the brother pet the newborn’s head as they exited the shop. They understandably mistook credit for Tony’s slow recovery. The fact was that Tony slowly realized that he was in the clear… for now at least.
That and he was beyond worn down. This stupid body of his was only a couple of days old after all. Sure, he’s a Pokémon now, but that only made things worse. He had powers that he wasn’t used to quite yet. As a Riolu he could see Pobon’s anger whenever he closed his eyes. He could feel the Grumpig’s glare even through the walls. But only one thing was running through his mind now was, ‘where is Steel?’
