It actually was fairly easy surprisingly! I just knew that since the character was so bright an equally colorful scene would play well. I used the blue cast water gives to unify everything, and made sure to repeat colors in different places (similar yellow on the character and the fish, deep blue on the "dory" to go with the bg, color reflections on the surface....etc). The picture I'm working on now is giving me more trouble in that department and the character has pretty tame colors!

I find the biggest thing with Sai is simply getting your brushes set up in ways that works for you. I tend to use the brush tool a lot, but the watercolor tool is also really great. Fiddle with the opacity and hardness, it helps a lot.
