The iguana I had as a kid used to do this all the damn time...she'd get out of a closed glass terrarium, and we had no idea how. Unfortunately, it eventually led to her getting sick, because she got caught outside in a cold winter and she didn't make it.

Perhaps try wrapping one of those swim tube things (foam tubes/noodles for the pool) around the bottom piece. You can slit them up the side so they open and wrap on things. It might be large enough to close the gap. Or you might be able to get some cheep scrap window screen and zip tie it to the top and use a softer cord to tie it down to the bottom at night. Dunno. I like the little wood thing you've done there, but I'm guessing there is some reason why it cannot be pulled up a bit higher than it is.
