Just like last year, since my story won then it gets to go into full story status. Please enjoy.
The Elite
by: Anthony Anonymous Writer
My name is Hank W. Aylmer. I am 19 years old and have an IQ that is part of the top 6% of the entire population. That makes me one of the Elite. That’s really not saying much. My actual IQ is only 106. That was beyond average three years ago. So far there are only three others that are smarter than me. One is 20 year old Gerald Cooper Banks with an IQ of 116. He’s currently next on the list. I pray to God that he’s found a good place to hide. Then again, there is no place to hide forever. They will find him eventually. And once they’re done with him, they’ll move straight on to me.
Why me and not the other guy if I’m currently in third? Frankly the person who holds the title of 2nd smartest is barely old enough to walk. Technically, she doesn’t qualify to become an Elite for at least another 16 years. Not at all like me. I would say that I pity all of the stupid people out there, but that wouldn’t be politically correct. After all, being told how dumb you are is insensitive. Well, what else could they possibly do to me at this point.
I thought I was being so careful. I tried to fail every exam that they gave us. I tried to not learn anything anymore. I tried to stop myself from becoming an Elite. I really did… then again, that’s also how they caught me.
Apparently, if you’re smart enough to skip your mandatory IQ rations, then it tends to raise a few flags for these confounded machines. Why did anybody think that a person’s intelligence should be shared be a good thing? I guess the people who passed that particular bill thought that they wouldn’t become targets themselves. Soon, very soon I will loose my own mind. That’s where I am now…
My cell isn’t very big. I didn’t expect anything less. Those machines regulate everything. If I so much as twitch in a manor that they don’t like then zap! Down I go. The only thing that’s preventing me from losing my mind right now is the fact that these stupid machines are programed to go in order. I don’t know much about machines, but I do know that they do tend to do that.
“Din-din-dong*, buzzed the signal for the announcement. I looked up to the window, thinking that this would be it, *Hello HANK.W.AYLMER. We are sorry for the inconvenience. We apologize that your previously scheduled drain shall be delayed once more. We apologize for your wait of NINE_DAYS_AND_TWENTY_TWO_HOURS. Please take your recommended dosage of Vitamins and Omega-3 Fish oil while you wait. Your brain is very important to us and we personally thank you for your contribution for the No Brain Gets Left Behind Program. And your country thanks you as well.*
I sighed a temporary sigh of relief as the panel in the wall opened up to reveal my “complimentary meal”. Honestly, I’m surprised that they haven’t run out by now. No body’s been able to work since they started this program. The way it was supposed to work was that people of higher intelligence would donate their IQ points to the rest of the country. I don’t know any of the sciencey junk behind how it was supposed to work. All I know is that I did not vote for it and it didn’t do jack to make anybody smarter than before. Sadly, I did the math…
I know that I shouldn’t be eating anything that they give me, but the thing is that there was no alternative message for those who didn’t really volunteer for this project. The machines were going to stuff them down my throat if I didn’t do it. I lost my freedom to make decisions like that two years ago. That’s when the machines really went crazy. Sure, we tried to fight them off, but it was a losing battle. Our government wouldn’t do anything for over a year and arrested anybody who did. Our military forces fought against each other over their loyalty to their country and their desire for freedom. Eventually, the machines decided to intervene in the war themselves. They wanted to protect the brains of the current Elites.
Eventually, only us regular citizens were left. Mostly those of us that lived outside of the major cities. The really smart people tried to leave the country, but such a thing is only temporary. I doubt that this will only become an isolated incident for much longer. Last I heard other countries were gladly signing up to this snake oil malarky. My uncle was braver than me. He decided to take his own life rather than see what the world would become. I guess that I was too scared to pull the trigger then. Today, I wish that I had a gun.
I thought more about my life. It wasn’t really a bad life. I had friends, family and I had Olivia. We weren’t together for very long, but we knew it was love. Unfortunately she was taken from us a year ago. I should have been stronger. I should have been there. If only we weren’t born as humans. Then these accursed machines would leave us alone.
I laughed a little. Perhaps we could have been birds. Olivia would have been a beautiful swan. Me? Frankly, I don’t even think I’d qualify as an ugly crow. Still we could have flown away together. Those machines couldn’t fly. They could hover a bit over the ground, but only while indoors. I wish that I was at least a raven or something. Ravens were a bit more… I think the term is “majestic” than crows. I could just fly out that window right now. Perhaps then, I could find where they took Olivia.
I read somewhere once that Ravens would guide lost souls to the afterlife. So yeah, a raven would be a perfect fit for me.
“Nevermore! Nevermore,” I squawked flapping some imaginary wings.
“Din-din-dong*, buzzed the signaled. No it was too soon for that. Way too soon. The last one wasn’t even ten minutes ago, *Hello HANK.W.AYLMER. We are sorry for the inconvenience. We apologize that your previously scheduled drain was delayed for NINE_DAYS_TWENTY_TWO_HOURS_AND_SIX_MINUTES. However we are happy to announce that your wait will not be much longer. Please prepare yourself for the draining process by playing an IQ Game while you wait. Your brain is very important to us and we personally thank you for your contribution for the No Brain Gets Left Behind Program. And your country thanks you as well.*
They caught him. They caught Gerald. Or he was killed during pursuit. Either way, it’s my turn soon. I didn’t have to play that game. It was the one thing that they did give me a choice over. Not that it mattered, I’ve been playing that same stupid game for the past ten days. Heck, on day three I thought that maybe if I didn’t make a move then the computer would think that I was losing IQ points and would no longer qualify to be an Elite anymore. No such luck.
I laid back on my bed. I couldn’t decide whether I should be asleep or awake for the process. I honestly wondered what happened to the people who’s brains had been sucked right out of them. I even wondered why the whole brain had to be sucked out. Why not just enough, or something? I wouldn’t mind becoming a little bit dumber vs whatever retarded facility that they’ll place me in after this. I decided that I might as well nap until the process, however the machines wouldn’t let me.
“Din-din-dong* Hello HANK.W.AYLMER. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Please make your way to the Elitist Chambers now. Just follow DROID_248 and DROID_249 and they shall lead you to your destination!*,
I slowly got out of bed. It was time for me to say good-bye to this world. The “droids” were at least patient with me. They didn’t jab or push or electrocute me as long as I didn’t try to make a break for it. They were the kind of droids that floated up in the air. With these big ugly smiles painted across their “faces”. One of them seemed to be damaged quite a bit. Probably from a previous escape attempt. It would mean that it was weaker, but it would also mean that this droid had learned. So my own escape attempt would have been worthless.
They led me down the long dark hallway. Since there were no robots that were programed to up keep the lightbulbs that came as no surprise. I had to feel around for the door. (Un)Luckily for me, the Elite Room was not in as bad of condition as the rest of the facility. The moment I saw the chair. I froze up. I was seeing my entire life flash before my eyes. This was the moment. I was going to die. The droids gently forced me into the room and strapped me down into that accursed chair.
The helmet was placed upon my head and I knew that this was the end for me. As the machines moved over to the control panel. I noticed that some birds were sitting there. They must have flown in through that hole in the wall. Most of them flew away when the Droid got too close. One in particular flew over to my direction. I stayed still trying not to scare it off. It was a black bird. I couldn’t tell if it was a crow or a raven. I prayed that it was a raven.
Please take me to Olivia. Please.
She tilted her head and just stared at me. Her dark eyes didn’t stare deeply into my soul or anything. She only saw what I was going to become. I guess it didn’t matter to her what happened to me. Still, I liked to pretend that it was a raven.
The process was now starting. I can feel it. My head hurts so much. The only thing that I can remember is that stupid announcement being made over the intercom.
“Din-din-dong* Hello HANK.W.AYLMER. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for your generous donation of ONE_HUNDRED_AND_SIX IQ points for the betterment of all mankind. We must ask you to stay as still as possible as the process is completely painless. Once it is over, you shall be taken over to one of our finest re-enhancement facilities until the day that your IQ points are equal with that of the rest of society and can live a happy, healthy, normal life. Once again we would like to personally thank you for your contribution for the No Brain Gets Left Behind Program. And your country thanks you as well.* And after that there was darkness.

Yiswe stopped reading the mind for a moment. He found it so sad. This story was not nearly as helpful as that of the others so far. However, the young Kluexxst made certain to mark the brain as a positive. This human brain was still in excellent working condition, so it could make an excellent transfer to a new cloned body. Perhaps even a raven like he wanted. Or at least a hybrid, as ravens weren’t exactly observed of capable of saying anything in any language. Even this “english” word, “nevermore”. Perhaps they evolved out of such an ability.
Yes, this Kluexxst just couldn’t allow this Kamian Ochadus Maximus (or “earthling human” as they called themselves) mind go to waste, no matter how primitive it was. Especially considering it wasn’t his choice to have this inkluexxstive procedure done to himself. Not unlike the first couple million that Yiswe had already gone over, give (take one or two hundred dozen). It was not their fault that they were tricked by a very greedy human.
Remarkably that human’s bones (save for the cranium) were almost as well preserved sitting in that chair in the middle of this current room. How could he think that his simple little human brain could contain the intelligence of the entire nation was beyond Yiswe and any one of his companions' understanding. Perhaps that’s why they wanted to revive these extinct aliens. Then they could be observed, hopefully in their own natural environment as not all of the data could be salvaged from those tinker toy machines.
Yiswe stopped for a moment to write down this particular specimen’s number. Even if the Hoellolf leaders suddenly back out of supporting this project, then Yiswe at least wanted this particular one and the brain that designated herself as this “Olivia”. Perhaps then Yiswe could observe this “love” thing first hand. In edition, “Hank W. Aylmer” was one of the last to be drained, so he would hold the most information about what had earth had been like. Yiswe then placed specimen #223,985,462 back onto the shelves with all the other “Elites”. Yiswe only had 213,578,996 more samples to review at the rate he’s going, he should be done by Xecury 14th.
Please read the other stories this month as well. Last day was October 20th.
