Behold the single picture that gave me more trouble than any other combined! Yes, this stupid fishman gave me so much grief. I had so many possible ideas and things I tried and nothing worked out and in the end... I dunno, I can't say I'm fully pleased, but I like it for the most part. To be honest, I'd put this guy lower on the list but this whole Top Ten is to pay homage to what is the most iconic of all Halloween figures which more or less is centered on the classic Universal horror films, which of course includes the Creature from the Black Lagoon, so it has to place here.
The concept of mermen always intrigues me. I think because I love love and fear the water. On one hand it looks amazing and the imagery it creates is awesome. I've always loved characters like the Zora or the more majestic type fish folk... and while on the other hand the water absolutely terrifies me! Maybe because I can't swim (I blame this weird, disgusting tasting fruit I ate as a kid...) or maybe because just like Australia, everything can kill you in the ocean! It's cold, harsh environment makes for a bleak, scary world which is what I think helps inspire such things like Lovecraft's otherworldly horrors. While I'm not the biggest fan of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, something like it was something I just couldn't avoid adding.
Fish people are another pretty varied race in Purgatory. Either being aquatic monsters, or people tragically doomed at sea. They can range from animalistic to human like in personality and usually feature traits of existing aquatic life, somewhat akin to the Fishmen from One Piece, if you're familiar with the series (to be honest I had this idea long before even reading the series, just so happens that Oda's depiction was pretty similar to my own, so it's a fair comparison)
