So another Halloweenie sort of pic back from the same ancient times....
A typical Conan-esqe barbarian defending himself against semi-human sewer-dwelling cannibal-zombie-cultists etc etc....from around 1980, prolly intended to be part of my illustration portfolio before i went into the animation biz instead....The original isn't quite this dark, but i was messin' wiff it a few years ago and just dug it being a few shades darker - especially how creepy his face looks....that smile - he's actually enjoying killing all these guys....Typical RPGer.... ;>
The short sword design though....uhg. Embarrassing.
Ink, Dr.Martin's watercolors, Prismacolors, opaque watercolours, etc
on illo board - approx 12 x 16 in

Thanks! Getting lighting fx to work is sort of a challenge, and a lot of fun when - after a lot of tweeking and reworking - they actually work! In this case a little digital darkening added to it - so many years after the original art i was able to look at it and go "Yeah....that's it!"
i think part of that was that i had a sense of where i wanted to go as an artist in my teens/early twenties - and i sort of got side-tracked into the animation biz - and for about a decade wasn't doing any art for myself - learned a whole lot about drawing during that time...but i had also sort of got more into "fine art" in my own time - abstract expressionism, all that - not doing much, but that was what i enjoyed - and looked back on my comics/fantasy art phase as juvenile stuff...
....then started doing some comix/fantasy/illustration art for myself(and a bit pro) again about the time the original anthro stuff was coming out such as Gallacci's Albedo and Wymann's Xanadu, but didn't have much free time to pursue it...
....another decade and a half of animation stuff where i did more series development/colour work and was sort of coming back to my roots...then storyboard...and i started working on my own characters and stories....and looking back on my early art in a more positive light - seeing old unfinished pieces that could improved and finished, just having fun with it all...
So there is a sort of thread of ideas and fantasy from my earliest art up to now that i like....regarding old works i feel like "i started that, it's kinda cool, i should finish it and kick it up a notch!"
That being said, i'm still into "fine art" as well - non-representational stuff etc - ...some digital stuff, fractals, op art, etc - that's mostly over at my dA gallery, though i post some here - will be posting more of that here during Nov/Dec as i'm working on getting some commissions done.
It also makes sense to "Never look back" sometimes, for awhile.....Been there, done that.
