If space is limited, go with N scale. Small, and reasonably priced. Z scale is even smaller, but rather expensive.

No passenger service on my rail lines. No freight either at the moment as there is no railroad. I need to build a layout for the 200 locos / 500 + cars. I haven't bought any new equipment since 1995 and so much has happened since then.

I have even considered building a small switching shelf layout in... *gasp* HO. Or maybe that neat Bachmann On3 stuff that is out. I'm broken on what to do there. I'd like to do a nice switching layour with hand laid track and turnouts. That really means HO or more to do the switching right. N is great for running and operations. Here I'm thinking much more rough and run down.

Haven't really come up with a plan I like yet. If it could get the timesaver in there, all the better. While I could do it all in N scale, I want to see the wheels on the rails and a bit more massive feeling.

My father was big into HO scale, mostly because it was easier to work with and less costly. When he installed Kaydee couplers, though, he had a very tough time. When you lose those springs, they are a bitch to find on mauve carpet.

I've swore up a storm myself when the spring would go flying. I converted my whole fleet to Micro-Trains couplers.
N scale can be cheap or pricey depending on the manufacturer.
