Commission for  backlash, this pic finds two of his characters Jake (left) and Zak(right) in a locker room, about to begin the school day. Jake is stalling, being reluctant to put on his school-issued "indoor shoes". Apparently the school board decided adopting such a Japan-esque policy would allow them to cut the janitorial budget or something. Or maybe one of them sat in on an anime marathon and thought of this as a "foot in the door" to eventually requiring school uniforms.

Jake being a surfer, adores his Teva sandals, and practically lives in them when not surfing. His size 16 feet may also have something to do about his choice of footwear. No excuses though, it appears the school has found a way to custom order him a pair of the school's adopted indoor-shoe style, the uwabaki in his comparatively gargantuan size. And he's not happy about it. Zak, on the other hand could care less, admonishing Jake to just get it over with--he'll get his beloved Tevas back at the end of the school day anyway.

Technical:

Not a whole lot of groundbreaking technique here, but I did try to make it look nice, swapping in some colored lineart here, a few extra highlights on the uwabaki to drive home their canvas+rubber construction. Originally there was to be sunlight streaming in through the alcove behind them, but it would have put the characters into deep shadowing, so I moved the light source from the hidden window to the ceiling. In the eventual Flash slideshow of this one, you'll get to see where I modified the vanishing point of the lockers--it was originally near Jake's right knee, but that forced the perspective way off. Jake's Tevas are based upon the TerraDactyl series, a pair of which I own and used as the model for his.
