I think what really pulls this experiment together is the classic-style celtic knotwork background. It adds to the... shall we say, deliberate simplicity, of the whole piece? celtic knots are ancient, but crisp and clean, with fine lines, and few colors (often just two, the positive and negative space). This goes perfectly with the flat shaded crow.
And the crow herself is so cute! it does indeed remind me of the old disney animation styles, perhaps with a bit of Secret of nimh mixed in. She seems very spritely and flirtatious in a joking sort of way, and that's an ideal personality for a mischievous crow.
So yeah, though you meant to see if the flatshading would succeed on its own merits (and it can), Its the combination of several other elements that really make this picture "pop", so to speak. I suppose... if you decided to continue this experiment, the best way to see if it always works is to try experimenting with other factors (a different type of background, or none at all, for example.)
Hope this helps a mite. Good luck with your work in the future:>
