Ch. 9 Anomaly (or Escape from Bowhive Base part 3)
When the children were finally out of the Kecleon Store, Liteyeer got back to nursing the Deerling and his fallen teammate to the best of his ability. Pobon remained completely unresponsive to any outside stimuli, but didn’t seem to be in any real pain or danger. According to the stats displayed on his Explorer Badge, Pobon was physically stable. That left Liteyeer to focus entirely on the Deerling’s health.
Bambi hadn’t changed color since the mental explosion. In fact she seemed to be resting much easier now. Whatever was afflicting her just seemed to have vanished entirely. Liteyeer breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn’t easy being the Explorer Leader of Team Daybreak. So many weird things have been happening as of late. Far too many even considering the Mystery Dungeons themselves. And all of these events somehow centered around Pilot Forest.
“How is she,” one of the Kecleon brothers asked. Liteyeer couldn’t tell which one though.
“Better, but we won’t really know until she wakes,” Liteyeer looked to the pile of unused berries, “you can take those back now if you want.”
“You wont get all of your money back.”
“Humph…,” Liteyeer rubbed his temples, “fine we needed a few dozen Oran Berries anyway.”
“My brother was just joking, of course,” the blue striped one jabbed his partner in the chest.
“Oh sure, it’s not like we haven’t been keeping anything potentially dangerous for him or anything,” the red striped one shrugged.
“That’s right,” Liteyeer stated to no one in particular. He remembered the Honedge that had bonded with the newborn. Most of the strange occurrences started right around the time Dimitree had found that Honedge and egg. It wasn’t just here in Bowhive Base or Pilot Forest.
Liteyeer had noticed quite a few while traveling on their Missions. There were strange new fashion trends in other towns. The trends varied from something as small as wearing special rings or something as big as dying their fur colors to strange colors. Dozens of Pokémon (including MD Teams) had gone missing, just this past week alone. The few that were found had no memory about how they got to where they were. Many more had even forgotten who they were.
Liteyeer was so deep into his thoughts that he didn’t notice that his comrade’s eyes flipped open. Pobon grinned wide before he snapped into a sitting position. This startled the Kecleon pair. Their screaming alerted Liteyeer of the Grumpig’s sudden movements.
“Oh Pobon, You’re awake,” Liteyeer put a hand to his chest to settle his nerves, “are you alright?”
The two brothers stayed quiet as they shuffled down the hallway to their home. Not that Zephyr would let them contribute any part of the conversation that they would have had. She made how disappointed she was very clear. Although, by the time they arrived Zephyr also asked enough questions to interrogate nine other Pokémon. She only stopped talking when the front door slammed open and the three small Pokémon were nearly run over by Mama.
“Dimitree! Raider! Thank Arceus, your safe,” Mama huffed out her worries before her inner demon came out, “where did you boys run off to?”
“S-s-sowwie Mama,” Raider whimpered, snorting as he tried to stop what little crying he was still doing. Even if he could, Raider wouldn’t hide behind someone this time. In fact he purposely stood in front of his Zorua brother, “I gots lowst.”
“Oh Raider sweetie,” Mama stated as she scooped up her children, “As long as both of you are safe. That’s all that matters.”
“Actually, they-,” Zephyr started on her rant but Raider and Dimitree shot her nasty looks. He didn’t really think that it would work, but it was worth the effort. Zephyr. Dimitree wasn’t even experienced enough to know how to use Scary Face yet.
“Would you like to join us for a late diner,” Mama offered, “I didn’t make much, but you’re welcome to anything we have.”
“It’s fine, I’ve got to get back to Liteyeer. We found this Deerling that was really really sick and kept changing colors like the seasons don’t matter. It’s really awesome how she does that, but we’re not even sure if it’s happening because she’s sick or if it’s some kind of strange mutation or-”
“Mama! Make her stop,” Dimitree covered his ears, “Ple-e-e-ease!”
“Be nice Dimitree,” Mama cooed, before addressing Zephyr again, “well, it was nice seeing you again Zephyr. Thank you for bringing them home.”
“No problem. Tootles,” Zephyr zipped her way back to the shop.
Mama turned to carry her children back inside there home. After shutting the door, she just stood there. Mama rested her back on the wooden door, just holding her precious offspring. It was as if she sensed something that the two of them didn’t. Of course, it was only the fact that she thought she had lost the two of them that had rattled her bones. Raider was the one to break the silence.
“You mad?” He knew she wasn’t. Her aura was certainly distraught, but not angry.
“No sweetheart,” Mama sighed as she finally let them go, “So you know how to use Dig now do you?”
“Yep! Wanna see,” Raider cheered, his stomach protesting to the idea.
“Not right now,” Mama pat their heads, “your dinner’s waiting for you.”
The odd family ate in silence for a while after that. Raider didn’t mind that it was cold, tasted the same either way. He knew that Mellon wasn’t really his mother, but she was the only real example that he could remember clearly. If he had those memories, he certainly hoped that his real mother was like her. That’s when an odd thought returned to strike his curiosity. Who was Dimitree’s Dad?
He wondered about it before of course, but he usually kept his mouth shut about it. His own father was… never around as far as he could remember. Literally all he could remember was the fact that his father wasn’t around. Same thing with Damian. That was how they connected with each other to start with. Today, Mellon was paying more attention than usual to Raider’s behavior.
“Something wrong Raider?”
“No…,” he replied looking toward Dimitree. Maybe something happened. He shouldn’t ask.
“Dimitree be sure to eat your Gummis,” Mama pushed the strange vitamin to her son, “If you want to be a great Adventurer then you’re going need to be well nurtured.”
“Can I try too,” the Riolu asked Mama.
“I told you before that you wouldn’t like Black Gummis.”
‘Not to mention that they’re expensive,’ she thought.
“But I wanna be like Dimi,” Raider looked up to his mother, “I wanna Adventurer too.”
“What,” Raider’s family stared at him, He had never thought about doing so much as leaving home past the Kecleon’s Shop before. Let alone outside of Bowhive Base. Even so, Dimitree was a bit overjoyed that his brother wanted the same profession as he did. Mama was… not so much. Raider could clearly see that her aura was more than a little bit cloudy about the idea.
“Maybe when you’re older,” Mama tried to hide that she didn’t want her adopted son to go out into a world that could kill him.
“You promise,” Dimitree shouted, “Then we can be Teammates!”
“Brother’s foreva,” Raider returned a shout while leaping on his brother. He knew their mother wouldn’t break up this touching moment. She couldn’t say no… at least not directly.
“Now boys, stop playing and finish your-”
“OhMiArceas! OhMiArceas! OhMiArceas! OhMiArceas,” Zephyr bursted into the room along with a pink Deerling and slammed the door shut behind her.
“Zephyr? What’s-”
“Pobon woke up and he went all Craaaazy! He’s got Yellow skin now, glowy red eyes, creepy chanting in some foreign language. I’ve seen this film before and I’m just too pretty to be covered with pea soup puke!“
The family stared at the Fairy Pokémon for a few moments. That to be the shortest explanation she’s ever said in her entire life. Mellon had to ask the Deerling, “what happened to Pobon?”
“The Grumpig is Possessed,” the Deerling stated.
“Didn’t I just say that! He’s attacking everyone at the Kecleon’s Shop, when I got there he already stole the Color Change ability so that Liteyeer’s attacks wont hurt him as badly, the Kecleon brothers tried to force him out, but Pobon disabled both of them, but Liteyeer can’t be paralyzed being an Electric-Type and all, but we can! So I guess that’s why Liteyeer told me and Bambi (the sweet Deerling here, that I mentioned earlier) to run and hide somewhere safe. But then Pobon BIT Liteyeer and he got all red eyed too, I screamed ‘it’s a zombie apocalypse” as I led us all the way here, because… because,” Zephyr seemed to be calming down a bit now, “I don’t know why. Why did we come here? Now all of us are in danger too!”
Raider tilted his head at what Zephyr was saying. First of all, because Pobon was not nearly strong enough to paralyze the Kecleon Brothers. Second, as near as he could remember, Electric-types could get paralyzed just as easily as any other Pokémon out there. And finally, something was off about Zephyr’s aura. It wasn’t quite the right color right now. Yes there was that shade of fear, but there was something else that was foreign for the Floette… while at the same time…
*Bam!*Bam!*Bam!* The door went, breaking Raider from his thoughts, followed by the phrase of several voices, “Vive la Reine! Vive Reine Candace!”
“They’re here,” Bambi screamed backing herself deeper into the room.
“We have to get out of here,” Zephyr cried as she zipped her way towards Raider, “it’s not safe at all…”
“I can Dig us a way out,” Raider nodded, but then turned to Mama, “but…”
“But what,” Zephyr shook the youngling, “spit it out!”
“Mama won’t fit,” Raider blurted out. Mellon did not quite register what Raider was referring to at first. But slowly it did dawn on her. Dig can usually allow a Pokémon to Dig a hole big enough for themselves within short bursts. If they wanted a bigger hole, then they’d have to actually be a bigger Pokémon.
“Oh Mellon,” Zephyr sighed as she looked up to the mother.
“Don’t look so concerned,” Mama shrugged, “I have a Type advantage over Pobon.”
“Not now you don’t,” Bambi lowered her head, “It’s not just the Grumpig anymore. It’s the Electibuzz and every Pokémon they’ve bitten too.”
“Didn’t you hear what we said,” Zephyr shouted, “one bite is all that it takes to turn you into a zombie!”
“If that’s really the case then…,” Mama turned to her kits, she hugged them for a moment, not saying anything. Dimitree had no idea what was happening, while Raider knew all too well what she was going to say next.
“I want you all to go,” Mama stated as finally let the two of them go, “I’ll hold them off as best as I can.”
“What!?!”
“Please don’t argue with me Dimitree,” Mama snapped, “you take care of your brother and run to your special hiding place.”
“But… Mama,” Dimitree tried, but got a pleading glare from her. His brother wouldn’t hear of it.
“NO!”
“It’s for the best Raider.”
“No it’s NOT!!! I refuse to leave you behind,” Raider shouted, “I am not going to lose my family again! Especially not like this! I’d rather die fighting!”
“Raider…,” Mama was stunned, like all the Pokémon before her had been.
“I don’t care if it’s the only way! I am not going to let you sacrifice yourself just for us,” the Riolu was crying now.
“I am not sacrificing myself, young man,” Mama looked pissed, a dark illusionary power rising up in her, “Believe it or not, I do not plan on getting bitten here. Now GO! Protect each other and I’ll meet up with you later!”
“But I Can’t-,” Raider stomped, but the front door cracked. The zombified Pokémon didn’t have any more trouble breaking down the door. They were rushing inside when Mama puffed herself up and let out a terrifying cry that shook the whole room. The enemy Pokémon in front of her were sent flying back out the door and into the walls.
“What was that,” Dimitree stated as he uncovered his ears.
“I think that was a Roar,” Bambi was shocked.
“Since when could Roar do that,” Raider wondered out loud.
“You’re not the only one who’s borrowed a few TMs,” Mama almost bragged to her sons.
“That wont stop them for long,” Bambi stated, the zombies were already beginning to recover.
“We’re out of time. Go now,” Mama stated as she made a dozen copies of herself, “I promise that I’ll be safe. Just trust me, Raider.”
“I think she can take them,” Bambi said, Zephyr nodded in agreement.
“……… Fine! I’ll trust you, but I don’t have to like it,” Raider reluctantly turned around, “everyone who can, follow me!”
Raider dived into the ground below. He was so angry with his mother making him run away like this. It didn’t sit right with him and it never would. He dug further than he ever had to before. Before he knew it, he broke through to the other side. Raider looked to find that he actually made it all the way inside the Kecleon’s Shop. Raider would have laughed at this if the situation were different.
Right now, however, he was just angry. How dare his mother make him do this? How dare she force him to run while she faced this threat alone. How dare she care about him so much that she’d… How dare she care about him… care about him at all…
And for the last time that day, Raider began to cry.
