Mainly, how to do the dark-light blending, and that Prismacolor pencils are rather awesome to do highlights with (have some on order)

Blending's never worked too well for me on Bristol board, do you use something else?

I do it on cardstock. What you want to do is lay down your light color, than your dark color, then blend it with the light color again while it's still wet; the colorless blender will actually leave streaks so it's best to blend with the lighter color.
