Lazarus was originally created by an evil cult that wanted to bathe the world in flames and eradicate all life on earth. Using the blood of the mythical Phoenix that was found in an excavation, they conducted many experiments by combining it with the DNA of other anthropomorphic creatures. Lazarus was the only specimen that survived and was programmed to be their harbinger of destruction. However, shortly after one of his rebirths, he was smuggled away by a traitor in the ranks and over the course of thousands of years was kept hidden from his creators. Countless centuries and rebirths has fully deleted his original programming and he has become a very docile and friendly individual.

Unlike many anthros, Lazarus has the average lifespan of a regular fox. (Roughly 15 human years). Upon birth, his body matures over the course of a few months to the adult stage which he remains for most of his life. During his last year, his body rapidly ages and eventually dies. His Phoenix blood incinerates his body and a young fox kit version of himself rises from the ashes, ready to begin the cycle anew.

This essentially makes Lazarus immortal, though the process has its drawbacks. After his rebirth, any memories he had of his past life is lost, barring any basic knowledge. That's not to say the memories are lost permanently, but it can be very dangerous to reminisce about his past lives. Anything that could trigger old memories from his subconscious could cause a total nervous breakdown, in which a forced rebirth would be the only remedy.

Although Ratchet was the only one who Lazarus remembered after every rebirth, and also Ratchet has the ability to delete memories whenever necessary with his telekinetic powers; he has never done it yet.
